The older God of War games also had a clever way of avoiding loading screens. There were doors throughout the game that you'd have to hold or mash a button for Kratos to dramatically open, like a massive stone door that he'd strain to lift with his bare hands. And considering how much of the game is spent holding or mashing a button for Kratos to dramatically do something, it didn't feel out of place. But those doors were actually there to make sure the next area was loaded. Also gotta give credit to Metroid Prime, whose loading doors, elevators, and hallways likely influenced several games on this list.

Fits right into such a world, too. Security is actually proper-but still not good enough. Those are the best sorts of loading period scenes: the ones that make sense regardless.

They also did the thing the Tony Hawk game mentioned in the video did. Make you go through long and fairly featureless corridors, sometimes with enemies showing up to stop you going forward so the entire game could load in the next area. Gotta get those red orbs, you know?

I'm only 0:46 seconds into this video, so I haven't seen any of the 7 selected, but I just want to mention that whoever came up with the "playable loading screen", where you can learn functions of the game or get some practice in while the game is loading (saw this mostly with sports games when it was first used) is a genius. That is all.

@MrTical91 Namco held the patent over minigames on loading screens that do not use the same code as the actual game. That's why they were the only ones allowed to use Pacman or other Namco games. Other developers can use playable loading screens though, like FIFA and Bayonetta do with training sequences. Or DMC. Even AC. They're just not allowed to use a different game.

My favourite game to do this is the Witcher 3. Every time you loaded the game for a new session, you'd get a recap of what just happened in the main plot. This was fine while the main plot was happening, but when I was doing sidequests for 30 hours, I didn't want to hear about the Ugliest Man Alive 12 times in a row. I get it, Future Dandelion, I'm abandoning the quest to find my daughter and going on contracts to get paid. I don't need to be reminded of that every time I start the game up.

Technically this was a long-running graphics design trick used throughout the game industry to conceal render-distance limitations in either 3D or psuedo-3D environments (going back @ least as far as Shadowcaster on DOS PCs) -- the result being that nearly every game back then was set in either a foggy fantasy world or a nighttime-only scenario. As late as 2001, the same basic technique was used in TES3: Morrowind due to the graphics limitations of the render engine.

Personally, I love the terrible dialogue and voice acting in Resident Evil 1, it really does add to the B-movie horror atmosphere, while adding a bit of levity once in a while, which in itself makes the game scary as the acting and dialogue make you forget that the game can be pants-shitting scary at times so the dialogue scenes lull you into a false sense of security and safety. Basically, when you are chuckling at the "master of unlocking" cutscene, you walk blissfully into an L-shaped hallway with very few cares until a dog bursts through window and gives you a heart attack.

The new God of war game doesnt feel like a god of war game in my opinion. I enjoyed the original style fixed camera hack and slash gameplay also the ability to jump when ever you want to is nice but the newer game is great don't get me wrong it just didn't feel like the God of war game I was expecting it would be... You also can't jump lol

Hitman: Absolution played cutscenes while loading. If the cutscene is finished but didn't load though, then there will appear the loading screen. If the level loaded before cutscene ends, then you can skip the cutscene

you forgot DEAD SPACE , that did a brilliant job on hiding map loads as Doors ... and its slow opening was tied into its game , and gave this game atmosphere ... even mixed it up with few enemies that would chase you ... another one would be ALIEN ISOLATION that hid its map loads with a DOOR QTE , when every time you had to do a silly QTE to open a door

I know the Mass Effect elevator method from Mirror's Edge. Those ones usually also come with digital newspapers built into the walls, making you _crave_ slow loading times just to get enough time to read them all. Tomb Raider 0 (2013) and possibly the other prequel reboot trilogy games hid map loads in cutscenes in certain areas. You also walk really slowly when entering Assassin... I mean challenge tombs and certain other passages. Earlier Tomb Raider games (1-5) couldn't draw most of the level at once so they have black fog that hides the landscape popping in. They are also designed in some areas to hide even that, by breaking up long hallways with columns in the way, as they teach in the level editor manual. Metroid 1 & 2 at least have doors and transition areas where you slide from place to place as new parts of the same map load. Metroid 2 even has tiles glitch out when it loads a new tile set, so you know when you are entering a new area. AM2R does something similar without the tile glitching and it loads just as fast as it's on the gamemaker engine which as is basic as they come by but can still make good stuff if used right, the 2D version of Unity. Earlier 3D GTA games (except San Andreas) had bridges between major landmasses of the cities, though they still threw in a quick "Tomb Raider 3 on PC splash loading screen" on those bridges anyway, in the form of a welcome sign. Assassins' Creed disguised it's loading screens...as loading screens. Most of the time you are in the animus so the meat of the game's maps loading for us is the same for Desmond. You can even wander around the void as you wait. A fun thing to do in AC1's animus loading screens is to try and outrun the glitch effects of said screen and keep going until you hit an invisible wall. The Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy are usually a straight shot all the way through like Half Life, except cutscenes so they probably hide the loading in those like Tomb Raider 0 does, especially FMV sequences, where the map changes are more blatant. Warrior Within's Sonic CD crossed with Tomb Raider Legend style time portals also have FMVs that play every time you use one, in order to load the opposite time period.

Don't forget The Crew 2, which has you go through a tunnel or between fences at walking speed in order to load the event (which takes time because of the server connection). Sometimes it doesn't finish in time, but in general it is a bit more emmersive than simply getting a loading screen. The game then buys some more time by having a 6 second long 3... 2... 1... timer at the start of each event. After an event is finished or aborted, you don't get put through a specific section or slowed down, you just keep going, which I find very cool. There are some races where it loads and you see a generic timelapse clip of the sun and clouds, but this is only done when the race is set at specific time and weather conditions, which somewhat makes sense. I would think that you could make that change while driving through a tunnel, though, but with the fences it it would look very weird (although it could work if it was actually done as a timelapse while you are driving at walking speed, but you'd have to load that in somehow so it really isn't easy).

The Citadel's same trick is something of a mainstay in the Metroid series, even as far back as the first game. This may seem odd considering the sheer relative speed of cartridges back in the day, but Metroid 1 was originally released on a _floppy!_

There is at least one of these in Tomb Raider 2013, we were playing the other day for our channel and we just finished fighting on this structure that was hoisted between some mountains, and once we passed it, we got onto a cable car and passed through some cloud, so that the game could just have a white background all around while Lara chatted on the radio
