The older God of War games also had a clever way of avoiding loading screens. There were doors throughout the game that you'd have to hold or mash a button for Kratos to dramatically open, like a massive stone door that he'd strain to lift with his bare hands. And considering how much of the game is spent holding or mashing a button for Kratos to dramatically do something, it didn't feel out of place. But those doors were actually there to make sure the next area was loaded. Also gotta give credit to Metroid Prime, whose loading doors, elevators, and hallways likely influenced several games on this list.

Technically this was a long-running graphics design trick used throughout the game industry to conceal render-distance limitations in either 3D or psuedo-3D environments (going back @ least as far as Shadowcaster on DOS PCs) -- the result being that nearly every game back then was set in either a foggy fantasy world or a nighttime-only scenario. As late as 2001, the same basic technique was used in TES3: Morrowind due to the graphics limitations of the render engine.

Personally, I love the terrible dialogue and voice acting in Resident Evil 1, it really does add to the B-movie horror atmosphere, while adding a bit of levity once in a while, which in itself makes the game scary as the acting and dialogue make you forget that the game can be pants-shitting scary at times so the dialogue scenes lull you into a false sense of security and safety. Basically, when you are chuckling at the "master of unlocking" cutscene, you walk blissfully into an L-shaped hallway with very few cares until a dog bursts through window and gives you a heart attack.

I know the Mass Effect elevator method from Mirror's Edge. Those ones usually also come with digital newspapers built into the walls, making you _crave_ slow loading times just to get enough time to read them all. Tomb Raider 0 (2013) and possibly the other prequel reboot trilogy games hid map loads in cutscenes in certain areas. You also walk really slowly when entering Assassin... I mean challenge tombs and certain other passages. Earlier Tomb Raider games (1-5) couldn't draw most of the level at once so they have black fog that hides the landscape popping in. They are also designed in some areas to hide even that, by breaking up long hallways with columns in the way, as they teach in the level editor manual. Metroid 1 & 2 at least have doors and transition areas where you slide from place to place as new parts of the same map load. Metroid 2 even has tiles glitch out when it loads a new tile set, so you know when you are entering a new area. AM2R does something similar without the tile glitching and it loads just as fast as it's on the gamemaker engine which as is basic as they come by but can still make good stuff if used right, the 2D version of Unity. Earlier 3D GTA games (except San Andreas) had bridges between major landmasses of the cities, though they still threw in a quick "Tomb Raider 3 on PC splash loading screen" on those bridges anyway, in the form of a welcome sign. Assassins' Creed disguised it's loading screens...as loading screens. Most of the time you are in the animus so the meat of the game's maps loading for us is the same for Desmond. You can even wander around the void as you wait. A fun thing to do in AC1's animus loading screens is to try and outrun the glitch effects of said screen and keep going until you hit an invisible wall. The Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy are usually a straight shot all the way through like Half Life, except cutscenes so they probably hide the loading in those like Tomb Raider 0 does, especially FMV sequences, where the map changes are more blatant. Warrior Within's Sonic CD crossed with Tomb Raider Legend style time portals also have FMVs that play every time you use one, in order to load the opposite time period.

Don't forget The Crew 2, which has you go through a tunnel or between fences at walking speed in order to load the event (which takes time because of the server connection). Sometimes it doesn't finish in time, but in general it is a bit more emmersive than simply getting a loading screen. The game then buys some more time by having a 6 second long 3... 2... 1... timer at the start of each event. After an event is finished or aborted, you don't get put through a specific section or slowed down, you just keep going, which I find very cool. There are some races where it loads and you see a generic timelapse clip of the sun and clouds, but this is only done when the race is set at specific time and weather conditions, which somewhat makes sense. I would think that you could make that change while driving through a tunnel, though, but with the fences it it would look very weird (although it could work if it was actually done as a timelapse while you are driving at walking speed, but you'd have to load that in somehow so it really isn't easy).
