This episode is *peak* Misa. One the one hand she managed to play L, the entire task force and even Light in a near masterful way... On the other hand if she could just *keep it in her panties* for longer then five minutes and keep herself under control she wouldn't cause Light so many problems. Can you imagine if she used the Death Note to have a criminal send the messages for her? Or managed to wait until *after* the 30th to announce she'd found Kira? Light would have beaten L on the 31st if she did that.

@@rais6036 without Misa: - Light would never learn L's name - Light could never gaslight Rem into killing L and Watari - Light could never have access to multiple Death Notes - Light would never learn a way to kill a Shinigami On the other hand, Misa wouldn't had directly mentioned Shinigami, the eyes or exposed that the one with note could kill without seeing someone's face and knowing their names beforehand. So Light gains an advantage and also a disadvantage in a world without Misa/second Kira. Light had an upperhand in that there was zero evidence that hinted towards him being Kira so it is not like L could had arrested him prior to Misa. Most likely, this would had ended up in a stalement, as Light could never kill L without looking like a prime suspect, but he wouldn't get arrested either. Eventually, L would dig up the Spaceland bus trip's attendants (like Near did) and find out that Light was in the same bus as Raye Penber, which would obviously make Light the most likely suspect.

Regarding the "misspelled four times" rule, this is actually something that never comes up in the main manga or anime, but Light once rendered a Russian mob boss totally immune to the Death Note by accident because he's just shit at spelling Russian names. This rule never really matters in the main story, but is a fairly popular one to bring up because it, and the second rule attached to it (basically "do it on purpose and you die instead") present a really interesting aspect of Death Note rules-lawyering that could be played with in storytelling. (It's this "don't do it on purpose" rule that stops Light and Misa from doing it on purpose, by the way.) It also means he got really lucky with Takuo Shibuimaru back in Episode 1, because all of that text on the page there? That was him spelling Takuo's name six different ways because just hearing a person's name in Japanese doesn't really tell you how to write them at all. So: he must have gotten it right on attempts 1-4. A funny what-if scenario to consider: What if Light didn't get it right until attempts 5-6 and decided the Death Note was fake?

I don't know about the "hue of crimson" with the Shinigami eyes, although even the black-and-white manga seems to suggest a change in color vision when the Shinigami Eyes are applied. But one thing I do know is that the Shimigami Eyes cannot be shut off, and there's a strong implication throughout the series that this gradually erodes the sanity of the person using them. Seeing a constant crimson sheen over everything does seem like it blends with that idea...

They are pros at charming people and making a lot of "friends" in short periods of time with minimal effort. Awesome series. One thing I wanted to bring to your attention is that the Chief admits that he had his questions about Light and that taking the eye deal gave him some relief since he could see Light's lifespan. Considering this changes the context of a lot of his behavior. On rewatch, you realize there's a slow buildup of an intense tug-o'-war going on his head because he is a good detective in his own right. Mainly, Light's carefree attitude towards helping in the investigation is unnatural for a genius who knows the stakes involved. A lot of what's going on with Light doesn't add up if you're noticing it all in real-time AND happen to be a seasoned detective.

Good analysis as always. Misa is a pretty interesting character in the way that her impulsivity makes her a force of nature. She is relatively intelligent, but her desire for Kira causes her to act impulsively, which stresses out, everyone especially Light. I really like how this is highlighted later in the series with the Mind Wipe and Yotsaba arcs, even if those aren't everyone's favorite arcs. I personally love the character dynamics.

Watari makes a remark about Misa in the fanfiction story "Misa Amasora's Pure Love Memorial" (that's the Explicit-rated sequel to "Silent Partner, Unfinished Business," so you'll only find it on AO3), which I find to be a really accurate assessment of her. What he tells her is, "Your intelligence isn't very intelligent." Which is to say, she's really smart and inventive but also very inefficient in her thinking. Her thought process is scattered and it takes her a while to sort through it all. She snags on irrelevant things instead of cutting straight through to the important parts. Those two stories are really, really good, by the way. Read them if you haven't.

As a sidebar, one of the stylistic choices that the anime inherits from the manga is using sweat drops as a kind of shorthand to communicate to the audience how wrong-footed a person is by a particular thing. So when a character is visibly sweating on screen it's more of a device used to communicate their emotional state to the viewer and not so much something you're supposed to interpret as visible to other characters in the scene. It's weird, but kind of normal as anime/manga thing. Pay attention to the exact number of sweat drops that appear on people's faces during certain events, though, because it's actually kind of a measuring stick for how stressed they are.

Rem was saying that you can't see your own species - so Rem can't see Ryuk's life span, but she can see Misa and Light's; and I'm assuming the opposite is true, as well - that Misa could see Ryuk and Rem's lifespan, but not Light (or any other Human Death Note user). The bit about her being able to see Rem and Ryuk's is debatable, though - that's never confirmed (at least not in the anime.)

Great video dude! Loving this series! One note though: I think you may be reading into L taking Matsuda aside a bit too much. I think that since Light is still a suspect and we see L being suspicious of the other dates like the Aoyama notebook one, L might think, in his mind, that Light will act a bit out of character in an attempt to locate the second Kira. This is compounded by the fact that the task force knows the second Kira is not as smart as the first Kira. Obviously L doesn’t want Light to try and control his movements so it makes sense that he took Matsuda aside to keep this secret. Anyway, really enjoyed the video, and some big brain stuff from Miss, looking forward to the next upload!

In the last video, when they had the near miss at the coffee shop at the end of the episode, there’s another HUGE glaring inconsistency. Misa had the eyes already when she went to sit down at that table. As explained in this video, HOW TF did she NOT see the fact that some random kid at the coffee shop didn’t have a lifespan. I could possibly believe that maybe at the angle she was walking, perhaps she didn’t see a person sitting at that corner booth, but after seeing thousands of numbers per day, anyone without numbers would be immediately noticeable. If she just missed him, him then when he was completely alone just doesn’t add up. Maybe that’s an anime only scene

3:31 as to the colorblindness of the Shinigami eyes, since Shinigami constantly have those eyes, they may not even be aware that the coloring is different for human eyes since they literally never had any other kind of eyes. so they may know that they can see life spans, because clearly the humans who get the death note could not, but they don’t know necessarily or at least it’s never said that they know that humans can see things in other colors than they can.

Shinigami do not have the same sense of mortality as we do, if they did, they wouldn't use the DN. The real question here is, why the shinigami king care? How did you not point out that HOW WOULD MISA HAVE KNOWN that Kira would have been able to even see the notebook by itself without her knowing that Kira is working on the Kira Task Force, who assumedly would have been the only people who would have been able to truly see the diary.

I now think that going to Aoyama is the dumbest thing Light did since episode 2. It led to him being burdened with Misa and suspected more by L, and what was he possibly going to achieve? Look out for people waving their notebook? Talk to them in front of Matsuda and security cameras? Especially since his plan was to discover a second Kira without revealing himself

Ok, but the second guy Light kills with the death note (the dude who got runover by a truck), Light only hears his name, so he writes it down in all the different spellings he think might be right. Wouldn't that render the death note useless?

12:00 to be fair, it makes logical sense for a shinigami to want to write baby names. They take the remainder of the human’s natural lifespan which could be in the high 80s or 90s if it’s a newborn baby. Although if the rule is to prevent targeting kids, 780 days seems really arbitrarily cause that’s not even 3 years.

Not sure if somebody answered already, but yes, Shinigami Eye users always see the world in a shade of Crimson and see lifespans above everybody's heads after gaining the powers. The LA BB murder case was focused on the only person ever to be born with Shinigami eyes, and he went mad because he couldn't see the world normally.

Rewatching this I just had a thought. Maybe it's not that Ryuk didn't tell Light that getting the shinigami eyes would make him see everything in red, maybe that's just how every shinigami sees the world, and it just hasn't come up that humans don't see like that.

Now that I think of it, in the death note sequel one shot the main character gets screwed over by a new rule made by the shinigami king. If it's cannon it's no wonder that other shinigami would be in the dark on what's safe or not, as well as the random rules of the death note.

12:15 "child". Baby. Toddler, maybe. 780 days means 2 years and roughly two months. And this is a rule that isn't important to the plot but important to the Shinigami world. Babies would have a long ass lifespan, so if a Shinagami wanted to kill one guy and get the lifespan of four, I'd go for a baby. But if every shinigami would do that, then at best people would notice the weird baby plague, and at worst would be stricken by so much grief and fear that they won't feel safe enough to bring another child to the world, ending up with less life to cut short, less lifespan to feed on. It's like eating the entire cattle and not leaving any breedable animal...

Thank you! That "kill everyone there" line has always bothered me! Like how? With the eyes??? Too proud to get them for Naiomi but dumb enough to kill that many people who were in a public place with you on camera? L wasn't with him either & wouldn't be dumb enough to show his face after that + that's more than enough proof for most people! Also to be fair shinigami can SEE the name so...there's no excuse for a shinigami misspelling the name. Only a human with no shinigami eyes.

About the misspelling names. Light wrote down his second victims name 6 separate times each with different spelling just to make sure he kills the right dude and he can still use his death note afterwards so that rule isn't true.

Whenever Light wrote Takuo Shibuimaru's name that many times, he had written it in different ways. He chose the most likely ways it had been spelled, and with his intuition and knowledge of the Japanese language, he was correct in his first four guesses. If he had been incorrect within the first four names he wrote, then the remaining attempts would not have a chance to succeed. The rule applies as each spelled name is tested, so he can get it wrong once, twice, thrice but after the fourth he's lost the opportunity. The rule is still applicable, just has details that are not specified.
