It reminds me of The Taming of the Shrew, and how even after Shakespeare was dead people wrote a sequel to it not even 50 years after his death (entitled The Tamer Tamed) where it was gender swapped. So the idea of "if a romantic comedy is problematic due to the gender roles involved, just switch the genders" seems to be an old stand-by.

Liked this, not surprised Sarah wasn't having any of this movie. I can see it and get it, I'm with Brad, though, it's a movie I saw as a kid, but haven't seen in a long time, so it's one that holds a place in me. But I do see the problems in it.

"Unbearable woman meets a man who's mean to her… because… and just spanks her until she's a better person and falls in love with him." That's not a screwball comedy, that's Taming of the Shrew!

Taming of the Shrew is also kind of gross and hashtag problematic. I saw a performance of it when I was like fifteen and I kept waiting for it to get funny... and I love Shakespeare's comedies.

+SavageGreywolf Whether or not Taming of the Shrew is funny really depends on the quality of the production. I've seen some hilarious interpretations and some unbearable ones. You really have to lean into the misogyny for it to work and some people are afraid to do that or don't know how to do it in a funny way. And more importantly, you need to have really charming leads for it to work, similar to this movie. As for it being "problematic"... dude it's 428 years old...

My sarcasm meter has difficulties taking readings on comments from time to time. You're laying it on for my comment being to obvious, right? He was the titled character playing against Martain Short as the put-upon dad. It's forgettable early 90's fare.

A B I wasn't being sarcastic. It has been so long since I've seen or even thought about that film that I literally didn't know. The only thing I can remember about that movie is the Turquoise DVD case with some long-haired blonde guy on the cover.

Love this film, it was filmed in my hometown, Fort Bragg Ca. The school where she berates the teacher is my old middle school, and the said classroom is my old homeroom. My grandmother is in the miniature golf scene.

I feel like this is the case for almost every movie from the 80s and any time before then. People look at these older movies from the past and focus so much on the parts that aren't considered appropriate today that they overlook why the film was praised to begin with. I'm not going to watch this movie, but I do love watching stuff from before my time because I just love movies. The Breakfast Club is my favorite 80s movie and I completely understand if you hate Bender for how he treats Claire. I totally get it, but that is just one part of the film. The rest of the funny and heart wrenching moments are what makes that film so good.

A couple years ago, I caught a movie from ‘43 “Behind the Rising Sun” on TV and immediately thought “this movie is kinda racist and white washed.” See, the movie was set in Japan and the 3 main characters were Japanese yet the people playing them were clearly not Asian. I sat dumbfounded, laughing and thinking “How the hell did anyone back then believe these people were Japanese?” In the end, I was like “That was a different time and I can’t accurately judge this by modern standards... this is just a snapshot of how the world was.”

I saw Sixteen Candles for the first time a couple of years ago and something tells me that even if I saw this in the 80s, I'd still think Ted is creepy, especially on the bus early on where he just won't back off. I remember not liking Kurt Russel's character that much but I still love the movie and the kids (I usually hate kids in movies). I think this movie is like SciFi , if you think too much about it you're not going to enjoy it. In some ways, Goldie's performance simultaneously makes it better and worse. She's so likeable that you feel sorry for her, while still watching her choose between two men who treated her horribly. I like to think she chose the kids.

i really love this movie i'm 39 so i grew up with this film. the thing about this film is that i NEVER took it seriously. on how i thought about it growing up. is that him treating her like that was him getting back at her. and he no pun intended goes overboard. in doing all that. i'm not saying it's a smart script but it's not just the leads who make the film it's those kids as well. they make it too. in short i never really think about all that shit that bothered Sarah only cause it's a movie. even as a kid i thought he treated her like shit. but as the film goes on it and at some point in the film to me it feels like he slowly at least cuts back on it. and Brad maybe right it might be the leads chemistry i dunno but i just love this film. and i also knew Sarah wouldn' t like it. and i have seen Swept Away my god is that film bad. i actually like Madonna as actress but she's awful in that film. and even without her being in it the film is just painful to watch.even the Original director i think saw it and thought it was awful. cause i believe the lead who treats her like a slave. is the Original director of the 70's version son. and he's awful in it as well. if you want a really good funny story. back in the 70's when Roger Corman was putting films like Amaracord out for distribution out here in the states and putting them in drive-in's the Original Swept Away he found boring when shown it and turned it down. he went home and at some point he called from home and asked about the film and was told there was i think a rape scene in it and his complain about it was too much talking. he goes after told that rape happened and than back to the talking.

Overboard really is problematic, but for me it works because Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell just have such great chemistry together and they’re so fun to watch, that, logically speaking, I can forget about how truly fucked up the premise is. That’s why I have doubts about the remake, because I don’t see it working with anybody else. This is a movie that I think can literally only work with Hawn and Russell

I agree that this movie is totally problematic today, but I do remember loving it as a kid. That being said I'm pretty sure that Kurt Russell called Goldie Hawn's character "Annie" because her name was Joann and Annie was close without being too close. I don't think it had any connection to his wife.

i can fix one of the issue with the film to keep it from being a kidnapping. first you just have her go overboard and is lost. Kurt character find her and seeing her distress decide to take her home and give her a work to help with his children. of course part of the comedy is her thinking she the children mother.. .. ...hmm

Just had a thought. Is Overboard intended as a retelling of Taming of the Shrew? Because the premise sounds eerily similar (separate woman you don't get along with from her family, tell her you're married to one another, beat and humiliate her till she's compliant, then let her see them again). Never did like this one.

Well, in my (miniscule) experience, Korean soap operas are, to this day, quite chauvinistic in the weirdest way. Being a jerk to the girl you love in those can reach a whole new level. I remember one in which the guy literally tried to murder the girl, and another one about a band rehearsing Beethoven in which I only discovered the guy and the girl were intersted in each other when they kissed, given how disgustingly awful he was to her. That I was suposed to be happy that they kissed I only discovered when reading the synopsis, afterwards. lol

I have weird mixed feelings for this film. Russell and Hawn did amazing and the jokes were pretty funny consistently, but Russell is also just an unlikeable asshole after the first third and gets REWARDED for his behavior in the end, and that drives me insane. And if there's one thing a movie should never do, it's make me dislike Kurt Russell unless he's SUPPOSED to be despised in it.

When I saw this as a kid with my parents I just found it so bizarre that the Kurt Russell character would even bother with his crazy plan. Is he just a weird nutjob who wants to teach the rich lady a lesson? Who thinks like that? Besides Hollywood screenwriters of the 1930's and 1940's, of course. My parents just viewed it through the lens of "Heheh the spoiled brat has to cook and clean for the first time, GOOD." But at least this movie taught me what Poison Oak is, and made me want to go play mini golf immediately...

I have been telling my friends "No, seriously, that new Anna Faris film is a remake, only the roles are gender-swapped." "Soooooo.......... the guy abuses the woman and forces her to do stuff.......????" "................... I didn't say that it was particularly funny......"

It's weird. I used to LOVE this movie as a kid. I rented it from the video store all the time. Then a few years ago, I watched it again as an adult, thinking it would be a nice nostalgic experience. I was shocked at how fucked up it really is. As a kid, I had zero awareness of how gross it was.

bbbnnnlll I didn’t remember Goldie in a thong, but then I saw it again recently. It seemed every comedy around that time had a thong scene. This must have started it.

Same with me and The Peanut Butter Solution, watched it a bunch as a kid , watched it a few months ago on the Tubi app on my phone. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I could not get through it, there were some good shots and effects. But I don’t need to see it again. 😐

Given how terribly.... “problematic” doesn’t even begin to describe this movie..... I’m curious to see how all this is handled in the upcoming remake. EDIT: An extra dark comedy horror version would probably be actually pretty good. Actually. In the same vein as Death Becomes Her.... that would be a great movie. Death Becomes Her hits that dark comedy mark perfectly.

I honestly will be surprised if it's not practically the same just with genders swapped. it would be nice to see it touch on the concept and issues in some new ways and actually address with some of the actual problems that were somewhat non-issues back in the 80's. The problem is that I don't expect it to actually do that. That's just not the tone that some are heavily leveling when talking about the genders these days that I see trying to affect different forms of media. I know that's being pessimistic. I do hope it actually does surprise me. guess we'll see.

That's not being pessimistic, that's just not giving Hollywood the benefit of the doubt because those fuckers have certainly NOT earned it.

I see the problems the movie has, but it kind of falls into the twilight argument for me. I feel like most people who watch the movie are well aware that this is NOT how you treat women nor will they be nearly as forgiving if you do. And just to give context, I free up with this movie on VHS growing up and I've never thought about the story too Literally or that it had any basis in reality. Maybe its just the nostalgia goggles, I dunno.

Well, at least it's not "Going Overboard." Burt Young is depressingly phoning it in and he's still the best part of that awful movie.

Doctor Feinstone He's only in a few scenes. Unfortunately, Adam Sandler is the lead, and the movie is in the IMDB bottom 100. Though I personally think it's better than Jack and Jill.
