As a french person, what do you think of Napoleon himself?
@F_Bardamu7 ай бұрын
@@shurale123 Napoleon is very controversial even in France: at the same time a dictator spilling blood recklessly for his own ambition, one of the greatest military masterminds that ever lived and, yes, someone who laid the foundations for modern France. His military endeavours were objectively catastrophic (France was smaller and poorer in 1815 than before he seized power), but his attempt to keep the best of both political worlds (royalty and the revolution) was actually quite visionary. That's why the French Republic couldn't completely disown Napoleon. In a nutshell, Napoleon was full of contradictions, lights and shadows. But comparing him to Hitler as Ridley Scott once did is just ludicrous. Either provocative or plain ignorant.

@@urbainleverrier1 It goes without saying, of course. But, for me, it also goes without saying that a man responsible for so many deaths doesn't deserve any esteem whatsoever; also, it was only Napoleon who "suffered deaths like that", no other campaign of the age comes close to that level of madness and disaster. I agree: the Napoleonic Code (I prefer Civil Code) is a pillar of our age, but perhaps we should focus more on the jurists that actually composed it (Portalis, Tronchet, etc.), leadered by Cambacères, don't you think? Also, don't forget that the Civil Code wasn't his idea at all: by 1804, Cambacères had already been almost a decade working on many projects of a Civil Code: it was the stability of the consulate which finally made it possible to enact it.

He was advised by his Marshall’s to flank the exposed Russian left at Borodino, but opted for a frontal assault. He threw all his reserves at the allied center at Leipzig and again with the Guard at Waterloo. That’s not to say he didn’t still have flashes of brilliance (6 Days Campaign) but Napoleon’s genius had really been worn down by years of war and the constant need to strategize and come up with ever more ingenious maneuvers, as his enemies learnt from his playbook.

One time, he was caught by royalist forces. One of his generals come to the royalists and say : "The Emperor is coming". The royalist leader, Delassart, responds with "I am determined to do my duty, and will arrest you if you don't surrender". Then, the best big balls tough guy of all times marches towards Delassart's forces, alone, and says to his army to stay back and not to shoot. The royalist officers tell their soldiers to shoot, but no one dares. Then, Bonaparte says : "Soldiers from the 5th, I am your Emperor ! Recognize me !" Then he opens his coat and says "If among you there is one soldier who wants to kill his Emperor, here I am!" Then the royalists soldiers scream "Long live the Emperor", and Napoleon has a much bigger force

When he realised that he could not escape to America, his choice was surrender to the British--in the hope he could live in the home counties (outside London), or surrender to the Prussians who would have executed him. The British chose to imprison him on Saint Helena, if they had been really spiteful they could of done so on South Georgia (even further south, remoter, more desolate and colder).

THIS is what the movie should have done, explain (or show) each and every good and bad attribute about Napoleon and then just leave the viewer with one question. What was Napoleon? I truly hope we will get a miniseries about him someday, with the quality that Oversimplified set.

A talented general in a profession historically populated largely by fuck ups, regardless of how much propaganda says otherwise, and before factoring in nepotism baked into aristocracy, operating during a time where warfare relied heavily on morale and discipline, and pioneering a sentiment of "nationalism", a concept of loyalty to a nation, which is much stronger than loyalty to an aristocrat.

I mean, it's largely debatable if Napoleon's existence was beneficial or a prejudice for France's history, since, just looking at the results, France ended up in ruin and left the UK to become the global superpower after all of this... But one thing was not debatable at all, Napoleon's military genius. The guy is at the top of history when it comes to generals' talents, right alongside the likes of Julio Cesar, Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan (probably some Chinese warlords too but pardon me if I don't know their names haha). Napoleon was such a genius that he had almost all of Europe under his thumb, excluding just Russia and the UK. He was constantly spanking the coalition (as depicted in the video for a moment 😂) and made no major mistakes, at least inside Europe, until he unfortunately decided to invade Russia... That man lived rent-free in the Coalition's heads to the point where they had to eventually send him to the most remote place they could think of, then have 2000 dudes monitor him, complete with two ships circling that island. The cherry on top is that he had to get buried inside four coffins, as if they were scared that Napoleon would rise from the dead to whoop them for like the 6th time. What a legend.

One detail for those curious: Napoleon really was average height for the time. It's not British propaganda alone that invented the idea that he was a manlet though: he had a policy of hiring the tallest, most physically imposing men in his army, to impress people. So from an onlooker, you'd see a guy of normal size surrounded by big, tall soldiers, and assume he was short. After the Grande Armée's destruction in Russia, France lost 4cm of national height. No joke. Also unlike the reputation of a bloodthirsty general, he had a much more civil view of himself and his place in history: "My true glory is not to have won 40 battles, Waterloo will erase the memory of so many victories; what nothing will erase, what will live eternally, is my Civil Code" - Napoleon The Napoleon Code is the core basis for the law in most countries of the world, more than the english common law. Lots of it happened through wars or colonisation, but for some countries, it was adopted simply because it was that good. For example the 6 codes of Japan that form the basic Japanese law are based on the 5 codes of France, which assembled together are the Napoleon Code.
@maxvanvijfeijken26993 жыл бұрын
His perceived shortness also has something to do with different units. The French Foot was a bit longer than the English Foot. So because he was listed as 5'2", he seemed short. But that actually converted into 5'5" in Imperial feet.

amazing how this 30mins 2 part yt video with hand drawn character was way more informative and entertaining than the multi million dollar Hollywood production of Napoleon. oversimplified makes videos which take months or even a whole year to release but u just can't compete with this level of quality ❤
@altaccount86793 жыл бұрын
The sad part is that OverSimplified released this after my history class' lesson of the Napoleonic Wars ended, the even sadder part is that I learned more from this than I have ever learned from that lesson.

Bonaparte was also extremely good for choosing his marshals. Most of them are on the list of the greatest generals of all time. Davout for example never lost a single battle. He was called the iron marshal.
@johnshark9993 жыл бұрын
It depends...If Davout, Lannes, Victor, Masséna and Soult were great marshalls, on the contrary Bernadotte, Mac Donald and Marmont were mediocre. Perhaps Bessieres could have been a good general but he didn't have the status of a Marshall.
@xanthman75283 жыл бұрын
@@johnshark999 Mediocre for Napoleon's generals. They were still quite good.
@felps19173 жыл бұрын
Some of his Marshal's are very skilled in the battle bc they are command by napoleon (like Murat and Ney) bc if these guys to act independently they are very likely to commit mistakes, miscalculated combats like Grouchy during waterloo campaign, Ney and his miscalculated cavalry charge in British positions during waterloo and Murat... Being Murat (being flamboyant dandy king) in Naples.

Davout is great, and deservedly ranked top, but if there is a blot on his copybook, it's Vyazma.
@kerkonig51023 жыл бұрын
The thing most people miss is that even if Napoleons marshals where just mediocre, The marshals of EVERYONE else where just bad. I mean what do you expect from a Monarchy that favores heritage over skill. Napoleon and his marshals sure where good commanders but dont forget that everyone else up to the end of the Napoleonic wars was organised in a way as France was before Napoleon took over. In a sence Napoleon is the reason why nations like Preußen bekame the Military power house they are known to be today. Becouse Napoleon forced them to bring there Military and in a way societal structures kinda up to date.
