Hot take: The elo hell argument is based on false principles. ElO hell exists and its not because you get hardstuck and cant rank up, its because it is possible to play better but do worse. A lot of skills for higher elos like positioning, ult economy, high ground etc... wont work at lower elos because your team wont play with you. You are rewarded for playing worse with your team rather then better alone because no one will follow you. You end up stuck between playing "correct" and losing or playing worse and winning which to me is the real ELO hell.

if you play too well at low elos as a support your team gets cocky and overextends and thinks they're invincible and die that way. OR the other team switches and your team just keeps doing the exact same thing playing the same way or they send people to actually focus the support but the rest of your team think its them getting the value and ignore the back line. Ive lost easy first point wins due to shit like that.

Basically they just gotta keeping carrying for long enough to get out of the shit ranks. It'll take a while but it'll happen. I guess .

Hot take: the longer the life of the game, the bigger the disconnect between high level overwatch to masters and below. How do you explain tempo to a guy that thinks "rein counters zarya, swap or gg"?

ELO hell is 100% real if you're not playing enough games to regress towards the mean. Conversely, it's entirely possible to be playing above your rank but that isn't going to feel as bad imo. Still won't feel great to be bottom of the lobby, but getting what feels like an undeserved win feels miles better than dominating and still losing

5:17 this is so true and i'm glad a popular content creator actually said this. widow can be easily dived and killed, hanzo on the other hand will use storm arrows and fill your body with 5 arrows before you can even process what happened.

THIS! It's hard to go tracer or sombra against a Hanzo because they could easily kill dive dps characters. He should have louder footsteps and his arrows should be easier to see. Heck I can see Kiri kunais better than Hanzo arrows.

@@potatertotes Yep. And not just dps, tanks also suffered. Winston, Dva, and Ball could easily dive Widow. But storm arrow (especially after the armour change) is literally an ability that can delete half the hp of a tank in just 1 or 2 seconds. So not even tanks had the power to dive him. It’s either one shot or storm arrow for me. Having both is cancerous

​@@SSADO- I feel like any good tracer or Genji should be able to avoid storm arrows the vast majority of the time and even then it's an ability that has a cool down and can still be hard to hit on a fast moving target

@@aceclop yes, it's fine as is. but having it alongside the one shot was a recipe for cancer, and i'm glad they got rid of that in s9. however after the armor change it became a bit too powerful against tanks, who can't dodge it.

Hot take: Leaver punishment is lowering match quality. Whenever someone enters a QP game and is underperforming, they get frustrated, type "gg go next" in chat, and continue to fume instead of leaving and having someone else who is better take their place 2 seconds later. Match quality would increase if people were allowed to leave the game. Additionally, even if you do not want to participate in a backfill game, you should be able to leave that game as well. A 5-second downtime is equivalent to one death, which will happen with or without that person leaving.

9:35 "You guys need a statistics class" And here I am doing neuroscience (requires a lot of statistics) and I can easily admit I don't understand what dictates people's ranks in this game. Almost as confidently I can say that neither does anyone who makes claims about the ranked system: the matchmaking algorithm and the rank adjustment system are not open information and it's disingenuous to pretend like getting a statistics class just makes you understand the system. The point about Bogur was legitimate, going "nah, go study statistics" is a wild response and a hot take in itself 😅 This matter will remain unresolved for as long as the system remains closed to us. If the system was open we could run simulations at least.

I think Bogur didn't start really climbing again after that plateau until Lifeweaver received buffs during that UR2GM. However it does seem like there is something funny going on. After the rank reset in season 9, we saw well known high rank people like Kraandop or Aspen struggling to climb after 100s of games. Then they get on a different account, do a bit better on placements and climb wayyyy faster. Something doesn't seem right.

The point about bogur was not legitimate. He was playing literally the worst hero (at the time) in the game who not only was super weak but also happened to have no damage of his own, and an entire kit revolving around reacting and responding to enemy actions. This means there is never an opportunity for him to take initiative and make a play, since LW's entire kit is passive. To add to all this, the hero that relies so heavily on his allies was brand new at the time, so there were no strategies developed in the community, and half the time one of his team mates would throw the match because of the LW pick. Bogur literally had everything in the game working against him. No one can rank up in this situation

@@deadpaul6587 KarQ, in other contexts, casually says that any hero has a t500 player onetricking them, suddenly when a known top player fails at a hero, this reasoning is omitted and another takes its place to maintain the idea that those at the top deserve it. It's ridiculous begging-the-question reasoning. No matter what happens some people will always defend the status quo despite having absolutely zero knowledge of the workings of the system.

It's funny seeing people like that commenter act like game testing still works like it did in the 90s. There's no possible way for any company to fully test everything in a game like Overwatch. It's just too complex and takes up too much time.

To be fair, there used to be an experimental banner or PTS that allowed some testing of upcoming changes before they threw them into main game. I immediately thought of that when I heard it.

its not about how they dont have test servers, i think its just fuel to the fire. A lot of the problem come from questionable decisions that make us question dev's ability to read the game itself

Hot(?) take: Call it a skill issue but as a lower-rank player I find good Pharahs to be an absolute nightmare to fight and I know I'm not the only one with this opinion. She's easily my least favorite damage hero to play against, possibly even my least favorite hero to play against period. Doesn't help that a lot of them get Mercys to pocket them for 90% of the match.

As diamond 4-2 hanzo player the most frustrating thing for me is when I perfectly line up a head tap and then they just get hard saved before I can get a follow up storm arrow. If you dont have you storm arrows its pretty harsh to secure a kill on someone while they are being healed.

I can understand that point - where it can feel like "hell" to be playing optimally and the correct way but not being rewarded for it. I suppose my counter argument is that there's no way for anyone to assess what the true "correct" play is in any given situation. It may seem correct to you, but is it? Given the exact xyz positioning, abilities available, hero combinations, players in/out of voice to follow up? The correct play is no longer correct if one of the moving parts can't do the thing they're supposed to - I don't want to dismiss how you feel about it because that certainly can feel like "hell" but to me, adapting in a ranked team based game is just part of the game - and part of any team game, not just an overwatch ranked system thing. That's why full team coordinated scrims where everyone's on the same page can feel so rewarding. If adapting is too frustrating for some players, then I firmly believe single player games like chess, fighting games seem more up their alley. I guess the point I wanted to make in the video was that the law of averages and consistent play should even out over time, regardless of bad plays, unskilled teammates, incorrect plays and that's why I don't believe in elo hell. I'm just simply playing at the level I'm supposed to be at - I certainly had frustrating tilting "hellish" moments but I take those on the chin, move on, play consistently and it regresses back to where I'm supposed to be at.

Hot take: The team that finishes with more time in overtime should attack first. One of the biggest advantages you can have on a payload map is knowing where exactly where your team has to hold the payload in overtime or get back on the point on a hybrid map. However this advantage is given to the team that worse in the first two rounds. Seems unfair.

As someone who tried to bring in some friends to overwatch, The learning curve is about on par with CS and valorant. The only things that makes those games maybe slightly harder for newer players is that you cant move and shoot. but theres so many heroes and tiny mechanics in overwatch that can be overwhelming for a new player.

Hot take: OW 1 hero’s were defined by their key weaknesses more than their strengths. The impact of that was that you needed to pick hero’s that worked together and that worked for the map you were playing to create functional team and then play a style that worked with all of that. The problem was that a lot of people just wanted to just play their favourite hero and and that team building phase was a massive source of frustration and friction. So the developers started to build hero’s / rework hero’s to have less distinctive weaknesses. The problem with this approach is that you can’t then counter a hero or team composition with other hero’s or playstyles that expose the other teams weaknesses you just get into an arms race, picking hero’s with biggers stats. This starts with tank swapping since they are the front line, but if that is not working than the dps join in with tank busters then supports with high healing output hero’s… the answer is to ensure each hero has a distinct and exploitable weakness as part of their identity.

I think "elo hell" exists but not really in the way that most people seem to think of it. It's not that your main account is cursed, there's not some big in the system, and it's actually much closer to what Karq described. To rank up or down, you have to perform consistently better or worse than your established average. The more you've played, the larger the dataset being used to determine your average, and the larger the margin of deviation from that average that is required to actually shift things. Creating a second account, will, like Karq said, allow you to clean-start your average range. Which, assuming you really were playing above the rank you were at on the original, might result in you getting placed higher, and being able to move up or down more easily. In the case of Bogur, I'm sure he got much better with Lifeweaver over the course of the grind on the initial account but he had already played a majority of games below where his ability ended up. So creating a second account got rid of that baggage, making it look like he was stuck. I base off of my own experience with other games' matchmakers from when I played games much more seriously. I got to a very, very high elo, and stayed there for long enough that it's actually miserable to play now because even if I lose 20 games straight, it doesn't dramatically change my elo, and I still get grouped with the top 0.01% 😂

Hot take: Whenever a big sustain change is made (season 10 tank changes) the worst designed characters become meta. Sustain is not fun or good for the game. If they want some tanks to feel better than they should buff those specific tanks, not all tanks.

Suggestions: User interface: why cant we have customizable ui. I would love to move the hp bar to that spot between the crossairs and the ult charge meter. Having to glance to the corners for vital information mid fight is unpleasant. Kiriko: why not give her kunai some damage fall off. This would be something to adjust her overall power without having to sacrifice how well her kit works. Reaper: how about firing a slug for his secondary fire. It could do 70-85% as much as a full spread of his normal shot, but with a single accurate projectile. This would positively reward good aim via the headshots and give him a tool to deal with things that are outside of his normal attack range. Mercy: is there any way we can have the self heal when healing allies with her cadeus staff fixed. Her movement is ok, it's her self sustain that needs work. Soldier 76: why can't we have the fire & reload while running. I know it was just an April fools thing, but it was the smoothest he has played, ever. Pharah: will you please give us the jet dive back. In tandem with the recent movement rework she received that ability made her so much more fun to play. Reinhardt: can we please get the speed boost on sheild shatter. The counterwatch (I think) version of Reinhardt sheild break is fantastic.

hot take: The season 9 patch (HP and hitbox changes) is bad for the game from a competitive standpoint. It's now much harder to secure kills in high lobbies because the timeframe supports/tanks now have to save someone is longer since it takes longer to kill someone in general. For example a Kiriko or a Baptiste now have extra time to react to save a teammate who would have died on the old HP. If you engage someone as Tracer, it's now much harder to one clip and you will usually need half an extra clip (adding reload time + half the second clip for the enemy player to be saved by his team). Overall it decreased the skill ceiling of the game, because it's just harder to punish mistakes and it's also harder to be punished. If one shots were that annoying, why not simply scale hanzo and widowmaker power level so they can only one shot a 200hp if they have maxed the charge of their shot (compared to 67% for widow and 80% for Hanzo) thus significantly reducing the rate at which a one shot can potentially happen.

Possible hot take: Assault (aka 2CP) was one of the most epic, most *Overwatch* modes in Overwatch, and they should have kept trying different tweaks to the maps and the mode rather than taking them out of Quick Play and Ranked rotation. The worst things about the mode were when matches went further and further into overtime, and losing matches it felt like we should have won (which is still an issue with other game modes, imo.) Hanamura, Volskaya, and Temple of Anubjs, love 'em or hate' em, were staples of Overwatch 1, and their absence (outside of custom games and arcade mode) helps make Overwatch 2 feel less like a sequel and more like a prototype. Don't get me wrong, I love Overwatch (2, I guess) and feel like I'm in the minority loving it more than I hate it, but it feels different in less than great ways that it doesn't need to feel bad in.

The main argument against the existence of ElO Hell is always time. It takes time to return to your proper rank. But for most people stuck in that hell-ish place, the time spent can feel like waiting for the correct series of random outcomes that allow you to express enough skill to get wins, and enough wins rank up. And I think it feels that way because that is what's happening. Do you get enough steps forward before luck of the draw gives you too many steps back? Of course this isn't the case with every match, and there are always ways to improve and get better so you can express the skills requires to turn as many matches as possible into wins. But even then, how much time does that take? For most, I think, too much. ElO Hell is not a permanent imprisonment at a rank lower than you ought be, but rather the constant, effortful march out of a swamp of suffering. Not quite impossible, for far, far to close to Sisyphean.

Suggestion: Players should be able to choose which Ashe scope to use on which Ashe skin. It’s frustrating that some of the coolest Ashe skins have the most distracting scopes.

Suggestion box: a new ability for hanzo could be a flaming arrow. This could be a cooldown that causes burn damage to to target hit which can be cleansed. Or can be used to shoot the ground that leaves an AOE For a couple seconds that can set someone on fire like ashes dynamite I feel like this fits the archer archetype well and could be worth trying!

Hot take: Sombra is a broken/op hero. You always see a Sombra in a team that loses because she's a safe pick: low risk/high reward. She can reduce the targets HP by 50-100% before that person can fire a shot at her, and she can remove any remaining damage (e.g. Ana's shots) with her teleport. An Assassin hero with movement/invisibility/hacking should have a maximum of 200 HP in my opinion.

Heres my hot take: STOP BUFFING DAMAGE AND HEALING, they uped hp to lower ttk and healing speed, then immediatly started uping damage and healing(damage does include other factors like weapon spread etc)

Good feedback on the Ball changes! Im more than ok with nerfing Ball if he gets some counterplay to stuns. Not leaving Ball form could be good for survivability against the stuns. My proposal is to give him a new passive: Unstoppable Force When ball is in his fireball mode/ slamming down, he is immune to stuns or cc of any kind. To nerf him in other ways to make this more fair, you could not add the ball form change with hack. You could make him take EXTRA headshot damage, lower his health/ shields, etc.

Hot take: Overwatch should release the balance changes before the update drops, clash royale does a system where they release their initial balance changes ideas, then they execute based on community feedback, if overwatch did this it could be great for the communal feel of the game and be balanced

Single resurrect is more irritating than mass resurrect, especially with Mercy’s mobility increased. With her zipping around and with her ultimate, and having the ability to rez every 30 seconds, I much rather have it attached to an ultimate.

i know this is a hot take vid but here's my suggestion: dva should mechanically still act the same, but instead of a bomb that kills, it could be a mix of mei ult and cass stun where she send an emp wave out and slows enemies for a couple of seconds. this could allow dva in her baby form to secure kills since her bullets are projectiles. i just feel like recently her bomb has been less than adequate when securing kills, and this could give it a better chance for a team to come clean up. i dont think it should freeze like mei but just hinder and slow the enemy team

I could take every single tip and replicate the "meta" in my plat games, but just because i have that knowlege doesnt mean my team will, so the value and impact from what i know is very minimal unless im at that high rank where everyone has that level of understanding and skill.

Most of the player base actually have no idea what is best for the game. They dint think logically or with comprehension and their only real opinion just comes from what benefits them. Best opinions the majority have is just them echoing their favourite streamers and not because they have any idea

I don't play enough games to actually know (this is where elo hell does exist), but every game i que in Gold i'm top fragging and carrying when the teammates are potatos and i just lose bc they can't win 4 v 3s. I'm a tracer main and i top frag and consistently get people to chase me but i've literally had matches where 2 people on the enemy team is wiping my team. I kill, i peel, i distract, etc and still lose. Sometimes, i get 4 of these teammates in a row and win only 2 matches out of 6. That's all i have time for most the time. Maybe if i had 8 hours to play every day elo hell doesn't exist but as a causal with time frames to play, it certainly feels like it exists. Plus, i have an alt account that put me in masters/diamond and i did fine. Masters is where i was 50/50 so i think that's my true rank... but it doesn't feel like i can even get to plat the way games go in Gold on my main account. So why is it i can handles masters lobbies on one account and can't get higher on another account? There is something to this elo hell thing.

Hot take: Hammond pops out of his mech when he gets stunned or hacked because of a failsafe in the system. If he were to lose all power, and then be stuck in ball form, there's no way for him to escape and he just dies. (Long way around of saying do NOT buff ball like this, you say you want him to be tankier, but you do not.)

Hot take: if we went to 6v6 queue times wouldn’t be as horrendous as ow1 dps/support were, player base was much smaller due to the lack of care from the devs leaving us with the same metas for months to years, as well as being paid and not free to play therefore not being as accessible as the game is now.

it's not about the size of the player base it's about proportions. if the spread of demand was 1:2:2 the night time queues wouldn't get that much longer in most elos more tanks if the community doesn't shift to playing the tank role would just bring daytime dps/support queues closer to night ones and night ones to insanity

They definitely would, adding a second tank when no one wants to play tank messes with queue times massively. Maybe it won't be as bad as end of OW1 queues, but it will be significantly worse

@@harveysmith6636 but do we realize that a significant amount of people (me included) stopped playing tank a bit after ow1 death, the role is more demanding than the others therefore it pulls even more people away from it, even the people who enjoy they role migrate to the other two for the fact that gif forbids the tank pops off because the enemy team will change into heroes that either negate plays or completely stops the tank from making plays, whilst having a second tank would cover the weakness of the tank that is popping off

Hot Take: Roadhog and heroes like him need a complete overhaul! Give them either new mechanics or new features to make them more unique, pigpen was good but not enough to say a real rework since they only added one extra step to his hook combo. Characters that are either meta defining or complete trash aren’t good for the game!

Hot take: pharah is an extremely difficult hero to climb with on ladder. Tanks constantly complain about the whole team counter-swapping them, and pharah has the same problem. No other DPS hero can be countered by all 5 enemy players

Unless that widow at the beginning is trolling that is an incredibly hot take. Widow is one of those characters that can gain immense value for little to no effort. Quit literally just being a widow and standing a long sight lines you are gaining value. Unless there is a shield in the way any character that steps into that sight line to play the objective is susceptible to being one shot. As a result they won’t take angles that they would want to take because they are wary of being 1 tapped

Hot take: Push maps all feel repetitive compared to the other game modes. I don't know if it's just me but after the new map addition I've begun to realise all of the push maps sort of blend together in my mind gameplay-wise while other maps all feel distinct and memorable

I hate overwatch balance philosophy for so many reasons. Ball and crowd control really sums up one of them quite well Characters like ball are countered by cc so thoroughly that they HAVE to buff ball's raw stats or else he's unusable. Only problem is, now ball is buffed to the point that he steamrolls teams that don't use his hard counters Balancing an entire character around the three abilities that counter them is far inferior to just providing counterplay and skill expression, without having to push stats to the extreme

Hot take/game suggestion: This may sound weird but hear me out: There should be two separate ranks. One for the level you play at and a competitive point rank. The competitive point rank works as following: - It levels up for games won but doesn’t decrease if you lose. - The higher you competitive point rank currently is the less you climb for each won game. - At the end of the season you get the amount of competitive points for your current competitive point rank, and then it resets to a base level. The idea is to motivate people to grind ranked and win games even if the feel like their current rank is not changing. Currently it’s not really a grind even though you get very few points for winning games.

Hot take: LFG could work again. The community had started dropping off when it released back in OW1 and with OW2 being F2P, it could pop off again. All the content creators saying it was dead and there's no point in bringing it back are thinking about it when OW1 had already died and are now simply giving the devs the idea that it wouldn't work so there's no point in putting some time into bringing it back for the players who'd benefit from it which would be quite a lot of players in OW2

Elo hell only exists in bronze. Not only will blizzard bend over backwards to keep you there. The amount of leavers is insane. And they don’t readjust in real time. Like if we were predicted to win or lose it doesn’t factor in I had two teammates leave. It’s the same percentage. Bronze is an absolute nightmare to get out of

I don't think this should be a hot take: Calling Overwatch 2 casual by comparison to CS:GO and Valorant is like calling basketball or European football more casual than American Football or Baseball because the latter two sports look more convoluted than "get the ball in the appropriate goal". But in reality, all those sports can be played by anyone physically and mentally capable and willing to learn, but they can also be played by the most top-tier athletes in the world at an extremely higher level.

100%. They don’t have any idea how to balance the game and it’s more and more obvious every patch. They nerf illari’s pylon to 30hp per burst to lower healing. Then they raise the health pools and increased the pylon back to 40 go per burst. They’re running into the exact same problem they tried to change with the health pools. I’m at a loss for words with this game

​@@madtonesbrEven that is designed poorly, every dps being allowed to do 1 tick of hp for damage being able to apply the debuff is stupid. This is why Tracer was literal server admin for Masters and above. Literally sprays you off angle with 1 dmg and you're now receiving less heals.

Hot take: overwatch needs to ditch competitive balancing and focus only on making heroes as wacky and limitless as possible. This is guarenteed to make players come back because its the only thing people actually care about, playing as their hero and doing cool stuff. Doesn't necessarily matter if its balanced as long as new stuff is always being added and it is fun. Taking this path doesnt even ruin pro play because the best way to shake up a meta is by adding something new and crazy and players love finding strategies that suit their playstyle rather than relying on blizzard to properly balance the patch

Hot take: Most of the CC in the game isnt even that bad. People are just babies that like complain about any minor inconvenience. Sure maybe multiple sym turrets on one person can be a pain, but Mei Beam or Flashbang or Sigma rock etc. Really never urk me that much, even when i play tank.

Hot take: Honestly feel like a hero like Junkrat takes WAY more skill to play WELL (not just spam for easy value, actually play well) than it takes for a hero like Widow. Sure, Widow requires a lot of mechanical skill for aim and some positioning knowledge, but I'll be infinitely more impressed by a sick Junkrat airshot than a quick widow headshot. Junkrat's skill floor may be lower but I feel like his skill ceiling is infinitely higher than Widow's, especially with the poor state he's in right now

Hot Take: Now that most one shots have been removed or adjusted, I think we can get rid of mercy resurrect. Now to be clear, I dont think resurrect is broken (As in OP) or that reversing a kill is bad, but I dont like playing a hyper mobile hero where I get put in 1.75 second self stun with 45 second cooldown and have to rely on the enemy team making a mistake or ignoring me for it to be a success.

Hot take: All anti-death support abilities should have downsides other than cd. Rez forces mercy to be a sitting duck and lifegrip forces disengage. Lamp and suzu are all benefits and no downside.

Hot take: To go back to 6v6, they need to merge dps and tank queues, add limitation max 2 tanks and min 1 tank. After rebalancing, the combined will make it so the tank population will not be a problem because it will be a psychological problem for the players instead. This’ll make it so tanks won’t be raid bosses anymore and are killable 1v1 again.

Hot Take: In a game, like Overwatch, where Hero swapping is allowed; Hero swapping should not just be allowed but encouraged. It's a fun mechanic that you don't really see in other games and adds a unique flavor to Overwatch. Ult charge should be retained on swap.

I like this on paper, but I also see a problem with balance. Since Ult charge build-up time is different between characters, one could start with a faster Ult charge character, then switch to the character with a longer build time already at full ult. There are also ults that have different impacts. For example, pulse bomb is really good at single target; rip tire is single and aoe. I'm of two minds, it sounds like fun doing quick switches to maximize the roster of abilities, but this can also feel unfair since the game isn't built to handle that level of balancing.

Widow is "highest skill ceiling," lol. It's just aim dude. Find a good angle and it's just aim. If you are getting dived, play standing RIGHT next to your supports. And zshe DOES have free and easy value. Instantly dead is SO much free value. It's make support as a role next to useless, because you can't heal instantly dead from full hp. Team synergy? Widow is a hero by and large that plays selfishly with little regard AT ALL, to what her team is doing. Her ult, which COULD be good team utility, is used almost exclusively selfishly for the Widow heraself to line up targets or to find that flanker hero that is hunting her. IMO it's not peak design, it's the bottom of the barrel design.

Overwatch 2 is not casual - if you load into a game no matter if quickplay!!! or ranked or even arcade - you have instant the slurs in textchat or in voicechat =D have fun in this environment Ball is still shit at the moment cause you have normally ppl who just wants your ass get cced the whole time and you cannot outplay anything IF you play against 2 or more counters if your team do not get the value of the attention which a ball have. also ball is really ez counterpicked

I had one of the absolute worst losing streaks ever last night. I looked back on the replays to see what I could have done better, but I have no idea. In every match I had the most kills and the least deaths, and I felt I was the driving force behind the teamfight wins we managed to get, but when I lose three teammates in the first couple of seconds in like a quarter of every teamfights I got in it feels like it's an impossible battle, and that all my work only made the difference between turning a full stomp into a staggered loss. I don't know much about the theory of "ELO Hell" to comment specifically on it, but you absolutely can play out of your mind and only be rewarded with failure because the dice roll of matchmaking didn't go your way. I don't believe at all any other player would have turned my losses into wins, it's all just luck. I'm taking a break from this game and going to the Elden Ring DLC because at least there if I put in effort I see results instead of having it be wasted on people who don't deserve it.
