I learned a trick to find the center. Get one of those crosshatch lasers. You can point it at the wall and at the right place for a board and just line up the corners of the board on the cross lines. For your purposes you can leave it setup all the time on a tripod or attach it magnetically to a shelving vertical across the room. Being a laser it works the same at any distance. Mark your tape at the cross center like you do already. You can go through a bunch in a few seconds. I have one that self levels which means the board would have to be diagonal. I think you can get them that don't self level (you are only interested in the cross line anyway) and those are cheaper.

m/b try a pierced/ cut out "slotted" space cardboard template/jig? make it the size of the bed with the specific board shape already centered out---cut out--- like the round peg+square hole toys. Drop the tray in and then remove the template, depending if the laser cutter interferes or not ( don't have a glowforge to know). Keep master templates to cut new ones from, never to be used in forge. Others can hang up on the wall to be pulled from. Cardboard to test out the idea, more durable material later? time adds up

I have a tape measure that will tell me what half the distance is. It's super useful for finding the center of things. That or go metric for all the things.

Next time you go to turn off your Glowforge fan at full power, hold the button down until it turns off. Next time you go to turn it on, you’ll only need to press the button once instead of 8 times to get it back to full power :)

@paulringus18202 жыл бұрын
Davis, you said “…a minute and a half is not a lot of time to place the center mark on each board for laser engraving …” Based on the fact that all your boards are a standard size, a simple template with a center location would save you at least a minute of that time. A tape dispenser for the painters tape would also save the time it takes to find / pickup and tear off a piece of tape. Jen said a realtor ordered 100 boards, that is like 2 hours of your time the old way. Time is money, so by saving time you make more money. Your family business has been fun to watch grow. Love the content you provide too … Blessings sent from SC.

A minute and 30 seconds times - what? You're offering the classic reason for avoiding continuous improvement - "We're too busy!"
@dougcox8352 жыл бұрын
There is a famous line about Steve Jobs when someone told him that the boot time would be so many seconds and his response was that you should multiply that time by every computer sold and every time they are turned on. It's a huge amount of time wasted. But we waste 10x whatever time that was all the time with Windows today and nobody ever thinks about it.
@wmsification2 жыл бұрын
@@dougcox835 This type of waste is something that shows up in a detailed Value Stream Mapping session - spending a minute and a half marking the center of a board seems like a Value Added and Necessary step, but given the amount of time required, it demands a look. What's the center for? is it something the machine requires? Is the machine trying to establish a Zero point to begin it's work? Is there another way to do this? I'd like to see the whole minute and a half process and start asking "Why?"
@dougcox8352 жыл бұрын
@@wmsification I think he mentioned this in the video. He just needs an origin point for the laser. He also wants some consistency with the artwork being in the same place on the board. He mentioned that he tried some sort of jig but a simple piece of tape worked just as well. Believe me, I've been in similar situations where you try to get things down to the gnat's ass but it's not really that important in the end. That's his call. If he thought extreme accuracy is important then he would have invested the time and effort to solve the problem. Sometimes you can go down the rabbit hole of overcomplicating a solution when a simple answer is sufficient. Also He's trying to run the business as well as do the work. What's more important? Saving a few seconds or doing something even more important like lining up more customers? Or ordering supplies, Or any of a million other tasks on his post-it. What you are talking about makes sense in a high volume production situation but not so much in this sort of environment. Priorities.

But you guys don't have these. Pronounced Slepichka, as in peach. Also funny you liking kolache - these are very common in our region and probably come from around here too, and they are called koláčky. The same č as in Slepička.
