So I was able to update the command center to have max fan. Performance mode makes it bake, no question. So that is going to have to be tweaked. Its PL1 is 79w and PL2 90w. Default mode PL1 is now 45w and PL2 90w, it is much cooler - auto fan makes the CPU stay around 35-40w and max fan about 45w. CPU downclocks a lot, but FPS is still good.

I don't know if i will ever be able to understand HP's performance profiles though?! :-( Ok, max fan with PL1 of 79W makes sense, but why the hell do we need max fan to get intel's standard 45W?! I mean if max fan is sufficient to cool 80W from the CPU, there is absolutely no point of forcing you to max fan with only 45W... So if you want a bit quieter machine (non-max fan) you have to go down by 50%(!) from almost 80W to even below-standard(!) 40W for non-max fan?? In such a behemoth of a device?!

@@christophherberholz1066 lol, it turns out that for gaming you get the same FPS fir all profiles, auto fan or max fan. The difference is the higher temperature on Default with auto fan but it's not massive. Using Throttlestop I got performance to work well with max fan, and using same profile for Default with the auto fan it runs very well. I still have to test CPU work, will do that today.

Love my Omen 17. Got it with an RTX 2080 ( w/ 9750H). FYI, I did get a random update via windows which updated the command center & does include the max fan option now. However, it still maxes out around the same RPM as Auto (Performance mode) does during BFV. Still nice to have now nonetheless. Running -150v (throttlestop) & +140/+250 on GPU in Performance mode. Averages around 1850mhz on GPU @ 71c & 86C-88c on CPU (pulling 60-65 watts, pegged @ 4ghz all-core) in BFV after an hour. I also did a repaste with Kryonaut afterwards but only saw a 1-2c difference on CPU. Liquid metal does look like the way to go for any meaningful temp drop since the stock paste application is pretty solid from factory. Regarding the screen, very solid. Some backlight bleed on the bottom right & left corners like yours which is magnified by screen glow when viewed off angle. Contrast & colors are great. I'd also like to mention for anyone thinking of upgrading the ram, don't go for the HyperX CL15 2666. The latest bios simply didn't like the ram (2x16gb sticks) & would constantly BSOD (ram worked fine in other laptop). Crucial Ballistix 2666 CL16 2x16GB works like a charm. One thing that did surprise me was the headphone port. Powered my PC37X headphones better than any other laptop I've used & only needed 30%-40% volume in games/videos without the need of an amp. Extremely loud, full & detailed. For those opening the laptop up. Best to open from the side that has the memory card reader, pry about a half inch before the back of the laptop. Once you get that clip popped with something slim, you can pry the rest up with your finger (w/ a little muscle) starting from the back vents going clockwise to the front to avoid scratching etc. Anyways, just a few thoughts. Looking forward to your full review!

@@HASH8HASH No more than OC'ing a desktop GPU. Temps are extremely good. Plus laptop RTX GPU's are hard locked to a certain power limit anyways, unless you flash a different vbios (which will end up in a brick most likely). All you're doing is essentially OCing on the stock voltage curves. My GPU temp went up only 1c after overclock. Personally, I OC anything & everything I'm allowed to so long as temps allow it. Free performance FTW.

I bought the OMEN w 17inch 144hz 1920x1080p display, 9750 cpu w rtx-2070 and 16GB memory. I added a 1TB 2nd nVme M2 SSD and haven't tweeked the settings yet. Its been a solid performer for me. cpu does get into the 90's quickly under heavy graphics use in games, but it doesn't throttle too much. Bought it in July 2019. Its a solid performer.

Man, even the macbook pro 15" 9880H I recently returned, the one known for bad thermals, got 3111 in Cinebench R20. That omen is really low and surely must have terrible thermals. Damn. They had a couple on amazon on a decent sale but I think my search will never come to an end the way things are going LOL.

Hey there is a way to get max fans on the old omen even though they don't support that in their software Go download Notebook fan control 1.6.3 And use hp pavilion 17-240ad (not sure of the specific number but it is the only pavilion 17) And edit the write Register from 70 to 98 (not 100) and then u will have full fan manual control

@@OWNORDISOWN The version of Omen Control Centre on my machine is 9.3.6.0. It seems like a great machine so far. It definitely runs cooler in performance mode than either of the other 2 modes, I don’t tend to use the max fan option. If not in performance mode, the CPU runs between 80c and 90c. In performance mode it runs between 70c and 80c (all temps are from playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance with everything maxed). I’m running it with an undervolt of -160 on the CPU and with a GPU overclock of +160 on the core and +400 on the memory. It performs very well. Happily maintaining 1880-2050Mhz whilst siting at about 60c or less on the GPU. I’ve only run 1 game on it that features a benchmark, which was Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which returned 97fps after the undervolt and overclock and 88/89fps stock.

@@olegcherr The panel supports G-Sync. Of the 17" 144Hz panels, only the 2060 version doesn't support G-Sync, the 2070 and 2080 both do.

Thx for the first look. I have the new Omen 17 (with i7 9750 and 1660ti) with new bios and updates (includes max fan option). However I Always get CPU spikes to 95-100°C when in Balanced or Performance mode. Comfort mode seems to apply some kind of UV maybe because I still get similar performance (6600 CPU points in time spy 3dmark, around 2350 cinebench r20) but the temps stay around 85°C.

Hi, I an currently comparing the Omen 17 & 15. I use a separate monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse. My uneducated guess is with identical specs the 17" would run cooler because it has more room to 'breathe". Due to watching reviews like these on KZbin "Thanks" I've managed to pickup an OMEN i7 10750h cpu paired with an RTX 2070 model for £1260, down from £1699 at Amazon UK, however there was slight damage to the packaging hence the price drop ? Amazon still offered a 30 day return option. This is now by far the quickest in house PC which is even beating the desktop gaming PC , Good times. Note: Prices in the UK for PC and Laptops tend to be higher than those offered in the US, even with the exchange rate favouring the £ ? ?

Thanks ! In performance mode the 17" runs hot unless you do some tweaking. I adjusted PL1 to 65w , undervolt-150mv and set multipliers to 38. It runs fine even with auto fan then but truth be told just running at default with max fan or auto fan with an undervolt does the trick because the PL1 is then 45w. However in CPU tasks default setting is not the way to go. Thus the 17" doesnt seem to adjust its power in performance mode like my 15" and that makes it hotter in that mode.

I have the RTX 2080 model and I'm really happy with it's performance.. but I don't really see a difference in performance when I change default mode to performance mode in OCC. except the cpu tdp can exceeds 45w when I do Intel XTU cpu stress test. but in term of FPS, in Far Cry Primal benchmark I achieved almost the same FPS in both modes. In term of back light bleeding, my model has the same back light bleed of yours..

That's good to know. Default mode definitely reduced the fps on my 15", so if that reduces temps that could be the setting to use.

Great review. Question.. you kind of quickly glanced over opening the bottom to access the innards. I am looking at buying one of these today. Well, I have had no issues with my 15" but I do make sure to grab it in the center and not the sides to reduce any torque flex. It seems solid enough, more so than that of the Pavilion. Of course, with a larger 17" screen there will be more torque on those hinges...

I bought a laptop vacuum cooler for my asus rog strix scar II and i found no drop in temperature whatsoever, even sometimes i found out that the temperatures are increasing instead maybe because it is blocking the heat exhausts. Anyways i am sending it back. I wanted to ask if you would recommend a laptop cooling pad instead of the vacuum cooler for this specific laptop if you have any idea about them. like could they be more beneficial than the vacuum cooler in this specific case? thank you

Unfortunately, the Asus Rog Strix models do not implement the ThunderBolt port. The i/o expansion and ext gpus abilities the ThunberBolt offers is amazing!

For the CPU they are both pretty similar with the default power setting a manageable 45w PL1, however the 17t is able to handle a 150w RTX 2080 so in that sense it has better cooling as the 15" maxes out with an 80w 2080 MQ.

The Helios will get your better battery life so I would be inclined to go that route. This HP 17t excels when you are at a 2070 or 2080 because they are full powered GPUs.

Yes, it will be safe. You can check their support page to see what it fixes. You dont have to update it if you dont want to and should be able to turn off the notification I would have thought.

One question in advance: How do these very high CPU wattage consumptions relate to the mediocre clock speeds?? I mean, despite of consuming 55W in Cinebench it only reaches ~3.1 Ghz and therefore far below-average scores?? In games even up to extremely high 80W(!), but the Mech 17 seems to reach about the same clockspeeds with far lower wattages...?!

Hi Chris ! The laptop display is not Gsync compatible as far as I led to believe, but you should be able to connect to a Gsync or Freesync monitor via display port and have it working .

I think the MSI GE75 is a very good choice. I have a friend in India who has one, says it runs great even in his hot climate. Also the Asus ROG Strix gl531gu has great cooling and the Strix 3 looks to have the same set up.

Well, I'm initially going to use XTU to set the power limit lower, probably 45 to 55w. I will try to undervolt and if need be reduce CPU multipliers using Throttlestop. Will all be in my review👍

hey m8, apparently HP recently release a new hp pavilion gaming laptop powered by AMD cpu, the construction and design of the laptop have completely change, the exhaust vent goes through along the width of the laptop and the hinges is now more wider and seems to be more rigid compare to the recently facelifted version. HP claims that the thermal design is better compare to the pervious generation (debatable since no real data are shown yet)

I really liked the Omen 17t, I just wish it had a mux switch to enable hybrid mode and get longer battery life. Gsync is great though. Since the G731GW only gets 4 hours of run time perhaps the 2.5 on the Omen isn't too bad. Ive not tried it but Notebookcheck said it has coil whine. As a gaming machine the GL75 is a decent choice, cooling looks better although its screen has only 61% sRGB so for photo work the Omen will probably be better. The Omen will have a better build quality and I'm sure its thermals can be controlled but I think I would rather have the 6 core CPU on the MSI. Bro you are probably not looking for a random reply but I'll try to help you anyway😊😊 Triton 500 is probably the better choice as it is really thin in comparison to this and performance is basically the same however if you change omen 17t specs to 240hz then this would be better. If you're talking about base specs for both, will go for Triton 500 any day.

I do not like the hinges on these new Omen laptops at all. The first thing that broke on my ancient Pavilion (the machine I need to replace) was the p.poor hinges. That alone has made my reluctant to buy another HP machine, especially when it has hinges like these that look a bit 'dodgy' to put it politely.

But it seems kinda strange to me, that having gsync or not depends on the GPU and not the panel of the notebook. Y740 with 2060 has GSync support, if I'm correct, so it is not about 2060 GPU unable to handle it.

The Aorus 15 x9 I reviewed definitely had something wrong with it. Someone had removed the heatpipes and as a result it power throttled like crazy. I've seen other reviews and it ran hot. This Omen 17t is fine in default mode for the most part, especially with max fan. A simple undervolt will keep it in check with autofan. Alternatively setting performance with the CPU clocked at 3800 Mhz, undervolt, and the turbo boost set to 65w is a good fit. I personally would go with the Omen 17

Love these sexy omens I bought the 15t last gen, i5-9H rtx 2060m one + 16 gb (dualchn) 2.6ghz ram But the cpu thermal was catastrophic, even the local sevice centers & global premium support couldnt do anything after months of assisting me w the case & eventually, they surrendered by suggesting to just play most games @720p. What a frickin joke for an ARE TEE EXX Cpu reached 100c in a jiffy!! I never ever use other than comfort mode anymore bcs the rests give a guaranteed 100c! That "command center" is a selfdestruct My gpu is fine: always around 65c even OC-ed but seems like the bottlenecker is the cpu so it couldnt supply the rtx sufficiently. Only can play 60s @4.1ghz stock while reaching +95c Kryonaut, yes. On both. Liquid metal? Im still afraid bcs it def will corrode the gallium on the omen's copper heatsink faster My workaround is undervolting & limiting the cpu max freq. accordingly to each games & mostly play @45 fps. It stays below 70c Perhaps, any other suggestion?

Thanks for this review OWNorDisown. I appreciate your down to the point, just the facts, reviews. However, The new Omen 15 dh001nr (7PE00UA#ABA) is a RTX2060 model saying it has G-Sync. Amazon reviewers says the display indicates this as well, but then other reviewers say otherwise. I just ordered mine so I will find out in hopefully 6 days. I hope this has the F1.05Bios update so to better control fan speeds and more easily lower cpu wattage. With the cpu at a lower wattage, the i7 is still quite awesome for me since I am probably a hardcore game about 2 hours out of the week! :)

@@rajakhan12346 yes, Undervolting will lower the power. I think I'm going to have to use XTU and address the power limits. On occasion it would have a PL1 of 70w which is too high.

I would have to say the Y740 because it has Gsync, much better speakers and a better panel- brighter and slightly better colour gamut. Those macro keys on the left may take some getting used to but if you are into RGB keyboard lighting then its better. Thermally - i wish Lenovo hadn't got rid of the max fan option but i got it working well enough. If you travel a fair bit though the huge power brick on the Y740 may be a put off and that may swing it to the Helios, but I have been traveling with a 11 lb notebook and its brick is 3 lbs so no big deal for me.
