I recently learned the lesson of automation in my most successful colony to date. In a lot of instances it is so much faster and easier to build a long line of auto sweepers, and automatic dispensers that drop everything in the last spot in the row, to either be collected by dupes or loaded into a conveyer loader that transports it all to storage. I am one of those types that will sit around for dozens of cycles, while the dupes get to the end of their chore list and start cleaning up, or take several cleaning dupes just because i cant stand a bunch of materials laying around. This discovery has changed the way i play forever and despite expanding very rapidly, my base remains at least mostly neat and tidy and i love it. Thanks Echo for making series like this and giving us noobs something to think about

While not optimized, I think it’s a great foundational build. It has the potential for more teachable moments in future episodes. For a real beginner, trying to optimize stuff all at once can be confusing and/or daunting. Better to start simple and build upon that. And this really is a build any beginner could implement in their own game. Part of learning ONI is rebuilding stuff as we get more knowledge and/or tech. This made it easy to understand the basics, and perhaps more importantly, to implement them in game. Teaching new information in a way that can be utilized is more difficult then most of us think it is (until we have children, anyway lol). Good job!

I just started ONI yesterday coming from RimWorld, ngl the thermal dynamics is whats killing me! I was skipping the algea and went right for the electrolyzers and completely killed my farms lol. Thank you for explaining all the heat exchange in these vids! Totally Binge watched the playlist lol
@christopherg2347 Жыл бұрын
As I understand it, the Electrolyzer has a minimum output temperature of 70°. But it can be higher if the input is hotter. Why not cool the oxygen with the liquid your are fueling to the Electrolyzer? Just add some radiant pipes through the SPOM room. That way the heat from the fresh Oxygen is dumped into the water that will be turned into 70° anyway. Every degree of difference you can eliminate is a bonus.
@turboimport95 Жыл бұрын
pretty sure this is to explain the basic's. Its hard to add modifications and have to explain to beginners at the same time, Its much easier to keep it simple just for explanations sake..
@Thoron_of_Neto Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about Echo, but for me, the reason is because radiant gas pipes only require metal ore, while radiant liquid pipes require refined metal. At this early stage of the game, you'd be burning away 50% of your metal ore to make refined metal in the rock crusher, because you have neither smooth hatches, nor a metal refinery. Usually I will build an early SPOM like this, and cool the oxygen as it comes out, and then later when I have more refined metal than I know what to do with, because now I'm getting either 75% or 100% of it from metal ore, I'll put in an oxygen system that cools the entire machine, and thus it outputs cool oxygen.

@@Thoron_of_Neto there is always room for improvements, he is showing the basics for people who are new to the game.. I have had colonies last well in into 4000+ cycles.. he does not want to get new people bogged down with other stuff, that is complicated to learn..

I learnt why my compact spom wasn't working so well because I didn't have a second atmo sensor and it kept yoinking that hydrogen with oxygen sometimes. And then I changed the filter to a cheaper one so not it shouldn't require manual generator for a while. Hopefully.

Makes me wonder if you could hide the electrolyzer under water protected by airflow tiles to mask the heat. Have to test later lol.

Thank you for the guide Echo =) I was thinking about what concept i do not understand in that game so far, and i ended up with with large transformer (what limits output by 4kW). Whats its point, how to use it? I mean, we have no wires with 4kW capacity, so to everywhere we need to deliver 4kW, we need to use 2 separated 2kW wires or our power spine.
@EchoRidgeGaming Жыл бұрын
Check out my full power tutorial, it will answer all the questions!
@sinner5452 Жыл бұрын
@@EchoRidgeGaming I did couple of times and did it again just to make sure... Sorry to say Echo, but it have no answer to my question =C. You are using large power transformer there fdew times but you'd not mention how and why. It limits output by 4kw, but only heavy watt wire can stand it, so whats the point of it? My best guess its when we trying to save some refined ores while making 20kw branches from 50kw main power grid instead of making full grid with refined ore - and in that case we can add 5 large transformers instead of 20 small ones, and there is a usage of large transformer.

I'm kinda curious 'bout why mesh tiles instead of airflow tiles since you're dealing with gases only. Is there any specific reason for it?
@gallantgabby Жыл бұрын
If the electrolyzers break by wrong liquid, then the liquid falls out. If its mesh, it'll fall all the way through to the bottom. It makes it easier to mop up without messing up the hydro sensors/hydrogen setup. Now with this particular setup, it wouldn't matter. But if you were using a "proper" spom like a rod, then it'd be a way easier clean up.

So, why didn’t you just roll back your saves to before you were recording? ONI saves your game with about 30 redundancies.
@Chiberia8 ай бұрын
I imagine the recording process is pretty time-intensive, especially now at mid-game where you're looking at a couple-dozen cycles between updates... definitely worth cutting him some slack for not wanting to do ALL of the work over again. That's a lot to ask.

@ignis2137 Жыл бұрын
I definitely see a point of showing a slightly suboptimal design and how to improve it, instead of just making new players build a Rodriguez identically block for block with no idea why it's actually built this way, but I would argue what was shown here was needlessly bad design. It's probably a good idea to show a simple gas filter build, that just takes everything with one pump and filters it later, before moving to a design where gasses filter themselves by their weights, and I've seen echo built few different designs across different series that don't look like your typical Rodriguez, but work pretty much as good, but that abomination here is just needlessly confusing. What's the point of showing that gasses can be filtered by weights, only to built it in such a bad way that the gas filter is required anyway? Seems like that would confuse a lot of new player as to what even is he trying to achieve here. The series overall is great, but I think that for the electrolyser itself, it definitely would be better to show slightly better design, instead of that "trying to achieve something, but actually failing" thing.
@EchoRidgeGaming Жыл бұрын
First, it was not a SPOM. As I said in the video, I wanted to show the basics so people can design, learn, play with their own, before they just go copying a preexisting design. I also linked and explained that I do go over SPOMs in detail in another video. Thanks for your feedback.
@BrainusMaximus Жыл бұрын
If you are going to keep the electrolyzer that simple you may as well have just tossed it in your base with no pumps and collected the hydrogen at the top of your base.
