You hear this one all the time, and I had this very conversation with a good friend only the other day.

Without first watching the video and just going off the title. I'd say training "is" in itself part of getting in shape, lol.

I've been using the excuse recently of just being too damned tired. But there are countless professionals and enthusiasts alike who make time regardless. I haven't really lost weight incorporating BJJ, but my body composition has definitely improved as has my kickboxing in the last few months.

I recently helped convince a good friend of mine that loves martial arts to go back to training, your logic and advise here is on point. I would have shared this video to him if he were still at it. Fight teaaaam 💪🏼.

Changing the wording of one of your quotes there. "When you live life, you either win or learn. Sometimes you're on a bit of a learning streak" Been having a rough time lately and that hit the right spot. Thanks

Absolutely! I've struggled with weight all my life and am a lifelong martial artist. Getting into HEMA helped, but then when I decided I needed to get into armored fighting to REALLY study Fiore I realized that I needed to get into much better shape. I'm still not perfect by any means, but I've definitely increased muscle mass, dropped body fat, gotten a LOT stronger and faster, and feel better in my skin. Go for it! No matter what that medium is. And yes I still get schooled plenty. FIGHT TEAM!

Felt this and guilty of using this excuse. I've got a 1 yesr old child that I want to be around for for some time. I want to get back into martial arts having not done anything for a couple of years. Thankfully, I'm lucky in that I have a best friend who is a 5th Dan karate black belt who wants to train me, a freestlye wrestling club around the corner or a KDF in my city.

But then running would postpone starting. Get yourself to class first, then worry about cardio later, that's working well for me. If I don't eat for c.4hrs before, then I don't feel sick, just exhausted.

I started lifting weights when I was 15. Did that for years and then life happened. Then I had a break. Then went back to gym. Then life happened. And then I went back to gym. And so on until at around 2013 I stopped going all together (because life happened). Then in 30.10.2018 my then-wife told me to GTFO and I went back to gym. Since then I've been working out like hell. First dropped weight a lot and did a huge body transformation from a fat engineer to less-fat-but-far-more-muscular engineer to a huge-powerbelly-strongman-wannabe-engineer (went up to around 110 kilos, which is pretty much for a 160 cm guy). Then liver wanted to die and I had to change everything. AGAIN. This was in May 2023. Now I'm dropping at around 90 kgs and if I get my joints back in order (got some infections in knees due to running) the idea is to finally quit all ideas of competing in strength sports and just concentrate in powerbuilding and bodybuilding. Long story short, you're absolutely right. You don't die when you lift. You die when you quit.

I just started going back to the boxing gym after 3 year… and damn! It’s so much fun. But I did look like a newbie trying to use the speed bag, my hand eye coordination went to the gutter. But slowly bringing it back up. And the speed also went to crap. But I can’t describe how much fun it is going back and hitting the heavy bag doing 3 rounds

I have had that conversation before, but always with people with no experience at all that had a wrong idea of what a martial arts class is like. If someone has experience and has attended classes of that art before, it sounds just like a really poor excuse. It is better just to say: "No, I do not want to practice that anymore".

I later learned that he was deabetic. this story don´t have a good end. at 58 years old. something in his body gave up. It´s not like the only prize of not taking care of your body. is that stuff is harder to do and it´s harder to take care of your body.

To your friend: Some days you're the windshield. Some days you're the bug. Your level of fitness doesn't and can't change that. Get back to training, get squashed by 3-month white belts for a couple of weeks, and kick yourself for not getting back sooner. Future You will appreciate it.

I use to be an athlete, now I'm too fat to do BJJ. I will crush my training partners. I use to subscribe to the idea that martial arts will help me do that, so I might as well do it. But now that I'm the heaviest I've ever been, I will be exercising before doing BJJ again. Kickboxing sure, but not grappling.
