Totally!! And I think this particular liar revealed is totally unnecessary, that moment comes in the Wizard of Oz. I think it would have been more powerful if the citizens of Oz never actually found out that he wasn't a wizard; they spend this whole truly believing it's real and then only moment that his true identity comes to light, is when Dorothy arrives. It just doesn't make sense that everyone would promise Dorothy that the Wizard could help her, if they know that he actually can't.
@MadameTamma8 жыл бұрын
So much of the hatred of this film comes from people who love wicked, which is just a better origin story for the witch. In Wicked, she was abused and had to work so hard just for acceptance and acknowledgment only to find that when she finally got to where she always wanted to be, it was all a cruel lie, while in this film, she was dumped by a guy, and tricked into taking an evil and ugly magic potion from her sister, It's just not interesting.
@Alondro776 жыл бұрын
Eh, not a fan of the over-played 'sympathy for the devil' stuff. You take a perfectly good villain and HAVE to over-play that everything in their life was horrible... when there are plenty of bad people in the real world who are just plain evil power-mongers by choice.
@Alondro776 жыл бұрын
I don't see that the Cowardly Lion needed any alternate origin. He was just a lion that was a big 'fraidy-cat. The notion of something with such a fierce reputation and massive size being timid and craven is a perfect inverted archetype. Why spoil that?
@Alondro776 жыл бұрын
It's one of the annoying things about many prequels/alternate universes: they feel EVERYTHING has to be in there somewhere, because the audience expects it... and inevitably something doesn't fit in because there's no logical part where the character or major plot point would fit in that far back in the story.

Star Wars The Force Awakens handled "The Liar Revealed" thing really well. The entire movie, I was dreading the moment when Rey would figure out who Finn was but then it happened... Finn tells Rey: I'm not who you think I am, I'm not Resistance. I'm a Stormtrooper. And Rey simply says: "Don't go." I was like "HOLY SHIT I'M ALL IN! A+, JJ ABRAMS! A... freaking.. plus.."

I know I'm pretty much a minority here, but I love this movie. While not perfect as the fast talking con man, I think he does the man wanting to be great part really well, I also think all his stuff with his CGI sidekicks, both China Doll and Franklin, are really good and you always get the impression he's talking to the characters and not acting to thin air. I'd also say it's not a liar discovered story, it's a liar redeemed story and aside from one awkward sounding line was payed off really well. And while Mila Kunis could not hit all the marks as the wicked witch, I thought she was the perfected doe-eyed innocent that was a pawn in everyone else's games. Maybe the film speaks to me because I feel a kinship with the Wizard as seen here, a would be con man that isn't as good at fast talking as he'd like to believe and really wants to leave his mark, I can relate to that, but this is one of my all time favourites. And the scenes with the China Doll still choke me up just thinking about them.

This is the moment where she becomes that, and she still just feels like a character Mika Kunis is sort of playing but...just not the Wicked Witch. The laugh doesn’t feel like it’s her, but it feels more like she’s been dubbed by someone who could actually do the laugh at times. It again...doesn’t feel like it’s to her credit, which so I’ve heard, she’s a really good actress, so I really can’t hold it against her! I want to see the really good stuff she did!!! In that film, the entire Winkie race (of which the WWW is one) is green-skinned. Of course in the book, she isn't green (and probably not a Winkie) at all. MGM had two reasons for making her green; one was that it would look cool in Technicolor (also why Dorothy's magic shoes were made red instead of silver) and also that they were thinking of the Wintergreen Witch from the 1936 radio series "The Cinnamon Bear."

Look at IMDB, and most people loved Michelle Williams and Racheld Weisz. I don't get it. Michelle Williams her performance was very forgettable (though the writing is probably to blame for that) and Weisz is... ok. She does fine, but doesn't bring a whole lot to a character, and this is coming from a Rachel Weisz fanboy (but still, it's probably due to the script)

I've seen that sequence, and for all that it was rather yuck, I was impressed that the costume designer referred not to the MGM movie, but the art of W.W. Denslow, who illustrated the book, even giving the WWW character an eyepatch. As for Mila, she did fine with this role, which is, after all, yet another version of the character in yet another alternate universe.
I saw this in 3D when it came out and, honestly, I felt like I was flying. I never had that feeling before from watching a 3D movie. (No, I never saw either of the How to Train Your Dragon movies in 3D, appox on me, I know) But it felt amazing. The film itself was "meh", but the 3D was actually great.

I actually enjoyed this film. The first 10 minutes is brilliant and then once it goes into colour it turns into a Tim Burton style film. I am not lying by saying I thought it was great.

The Wicked Witch's last line in the movie, the simple declaration of "I hate you!" made me laugh out loud. Mila Kunis suddenly turned into Yosemite Sam, The Rootenest, Tootenest, Shootenest Wicked Witch in the West.

It would have been a great movie if it weren't for all the shitty romantic subplots. Seriously, the movie has, not one, but THREE shitty romantic subplots. All with the same guy. The Wiked Witch, Glinda, and Aunt Em!? What is wrong with you movie. I don't want to see the Wizard boning his way down the Yellow Brick Road. Little China Doll was great though. I'll ship that.

Em wasn't in the movie, nor was there any sex.
@AlexG-tf9bi6 жыл бұрын
But it isn't a liar-reveal, the ending and its status as a prequel hinges on it not being a liar-reveal. The only character who finds out he's lying is Glinda, who already knew he was lying from the getgo, it's left ambiguous if the main group know if he's a true wizard or not (Because, while not magical, he does use technology that is wholly unavailable to them which would seem like magic from their perspective), and as far as the rest of OZ is concerned, he is the real deal.

Actually, when you look up the production history behind this film with the casting, you'll see why Franco was casted: he was the last choice that was wanted for the part of the Wizard. The producer of the film envisioned Robert Downey Jr for the role and even approached him for it. But RDJ was not interested in the script so he turned it down. After that, the studio went to Johnny Depp as a backup. Depp actually liked the script and the character of the Wizard, but had to turn it down because of his commitments to The Lone Ranger. James Franco was then chosen afterwards by Raimi himself since none of the other options panned out.

Am I the only one who's sick to death of computer animation? I know it's the future of technology and all, but it just looks so fake, like I'm watching a windows screensaver. I think puppetry, stop-motion, well-designed sets, and good lighting make for the best fantasy effects, Just look at Labyrinth and Return to Oz.
@MaskedMan665 жыл бұрын
It doesn't always look fake; watch "Forrest Gump" and tell me honestly that you can spot all the CGI in that movie. I honestly don't understand people's animosity towards it. Did people scream bloody murder when matte paintings replaced painted backdrops or animatronics obviated stop-motion animation? There are clunky and unconvincing bits in the two movies you mentioned, but it doesn't mean the effects are bad, just that they have their limits. And that is when audience imagination comes in. Besides, fantasy is supposed to be surreal anyway.
@psychomagalor49025 жыл бұрын
Would actually say we should have more fully computer-animated films, especially with fantasy. There’s just so much more that can be done with it without the limitations of having to use real actors. There will always be a place for live action but computer animation has so much potential to be a great medium for filmmaking and storytelling that hope will be used to the fullest later on.

I'm also very mixed on this movie, but the good moments IMO help pull it through. And besides, it was a huge hit, which is a good thing because it allowed Sam Raimi to finally continue the saga of Ash Williams and the Necronomicon with the Super-Mega-Awesome Ash vs. Evil Dead series! Groovy!

"Oz: The Great and Powerful" is a decent film and I enjoy the prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" or other sources that they're trying to make a new setup for the "Oz" series. James Franco was not that bad and he literally sticks his character as a powerful magician, but sometimes a little bit where people hated his performance that he is trying to act. I don't why, but he works okay. Mila Kunis is a bit too much and yay, she looks like over a top witch that she dressed up like a Halloween cosplay to please her hotness, but no it's way too pointless. Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams were good and the china doll girl and the talking monkey were good also. It's probably like a reboot version of retelling the "Oz" story that can take you on a journey of what this world can be and I can see why. Overall, decent movie and nothing to say.
@MaskedMan665 жыл бұрын
How do you "literally" stick an acting role? The China Girl (as she's called) is delightful mainly due to Joey King's wonderful performance; it's amazing to find a child performer who can give a full voice performance. This can't be a prequel to the MGM "Wizard" for a number of reasons, prime among them being that in that movie, Dorothy Gale dreamed the whole thing.
@benjaminwambeke94586 жыл бұрын
We should touch on the opening credits for a second here because A. The music is gorgeous (all the music in this film is, it’s Danny Elfman) and B there’s this great visual where there are two people dancing and as it turns sideways, they turn into the wicked witch which is just amazing if you’ve seen the movie

Yeah! And why bring up 9/11 when talking about all the ham-fisted patriotic symbolism or middle eastern themed villains that appeared in early 2000's movies? 9/11 wasn't a movie! Because as we all know, movies are only influenced by other movies and no other factors of the culture that created them. Who cares if it's a vital element to contextualizing all these bad fantasy blockbusters; it's not a movie, so movie reviewers shouldn't bother researching it. And if you haven't heard of something, that's no reason to - like - tell you about it!

@CBusschaert8 жыл бұрын
Annie Trinity you don't get my point. I understand yours, and you're right: context is important. But compare what's comparable. If you review a movie and you say "remember how my mom told better stories than this?", it's unfair to everyone who hasn't heard your mom's stories. Same goes for Broadway. Broadway stays on broadway, it's not an event where millions of people die and loops on news channel for 48h.

I'm actually reading one of those Wicked-inspired stories. It's called "Jacob T. Marley." It's about Jacob Marley, his partnership with Scrooge, whether he got visits from the Ghosts, why he was able to come back, and if he ever redeemed himself in death.
