*Round 1: PLOT* It should be a tie, because the plot in Wicked is far more sophisticated, but yet it is molded around the Wizard of Oz's. *Round 2: CHARACTERS* Wicked. They're more deep and interesting. *Round 3: THEMES AND MORALS* Wicked. *Round 4: MUSIC* A tie. The Wizard of Oz songs are classics, and really original. Wicked's are straight masterpieces. *Round 5: LEGACY AND CULTURAL IMPACT* Obviously the Wizard of Oz. *WICKED:* 4 points *The Wizard of Oz:* 3 points But we must take into account that Wicked is literally a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, so for creating something so wonderful it deserves... 1 more point! *So it's a tie!* This is just my opinion, please take no offense. And thanks for all the likes :) And happy 80th anniversary❤

Well, I personally agree with the comment. Also, no one enjoys EVERY exploration on source material (look at “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “The Legend of Korra”; the audience was so divided when watching the sequel series). Sometimes I feel the categories are a bit one-sided, like that last one. Don’t get me wrong, Wizard of OZ is a classic although it’s characters are cliche, the story is pretty standard and the villain is two dimensional. Wicked was a way better improvement from a simple fairytale. Instead of making the Wicked witch (Elphaba) a two dimensional bad guy with only one motivation, they gave her a backstory, strengths and weaknesses, love interests, relatability. It makes sense for wizard of Oz to be nothing but a dream because of it’s “meh” plot and characters, but wicked is far more engaging in my opinion and Glinda also had more character apart from being “the good witch” there was actual character development, amazing songs, great performances, drama, tragedy, grief etc. It made something bigger out of a simple fairytale.
@hearts4ozma5 жыл бұрын
even though there's a whole book series of the wizard of oz, don't call characters "meh" unless u haven't actually took the time to read baum's books, plus the wicked wouldn't be here with the wizard of oz so-
@supersqueek1715 жыл бұрын
Mhylow Cat I have read the series and still think they are a bit meh. I find wicked goes way deeper into backstory. Wizard of oz just is too cheesy and doesn’t go too deep into different characters. I don’t think wicked was stealing from the movie. We shouldn’t take points away from wicked jus because it was based off the movie. I understand the frustration of people saying things when they haven’t read the books but from someone who has, I don’t really like it
@memebigboy31295 жыл бұрын
I agree completely with this statement. The characters in Wicked have more depth and aren't the classic 1 motivation villains and hero. In fact it provides love and friendship in Elphie's life and creates a sense that evil isn't born it's made.
@lulub5175 жыл бұрын
Mhylow Cat Well I haven’t even read the books, I didn’t know there were books I read a bit of the Wicked book but I really didn’t like it all that much. In the movie’s case it was pretty basic when it came to characters.

The Wizard Of Oz is a very classic, iconic movie, but it’s kind of random and just seems like the plot is doing whatever it wants the entire movie. But Wicked explains all of that, how the flying monkeys got their wings, why all of the Wizard Of Oz characters need what they go to the wizard to ask for, and why her and Glinda are the way they are. So in my opinion, Wicked has to take the win. 😊

@SillyCreatureSally Жыл бұрын
@@BookOfBap It has too many plot holes. Like, in the film, the entire Winkie race is green.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh Жыл бұрын
@@SillyCreatureSally As far as the 1939 MGM film itself goes, that was to further link them to The Wicked Witch of the West. In every other iteration (both the 1995 novel & 2003 musical versions of _Wicked_ included), the Winkies [1] are just regular people forced to serve The Wicked Witch of the West, with no extraordinary skin color among them to be seen. 1. As far as _Wicked_ is concerned, Winkie was devised as an enslavement term invented by the biased Ozian media to further defame our "beautifully tragic" protagonist, which was why they were otherwise referred to as the Vinkus royal guards (who still resented Elphie because their crown prince Fiyero fell in love with the green girl, even though they detested her personally due to staunchly believing all of the heresy spread about her). This contrasts with most other incarnations, which refers to the oppressed western citizens subjugated by The Wicked Witch of the West as Winkies for the entirety of their time in the story.

I feel that it’s hard to fairly compare ‘Legacy/Impact’ between an 80-year old movie and a 16-year old musical. One has had so much longer to become impactful than the other. I do see your point though about the possibility of Wicked not being created without the Wizard of Oz coming first but as someone else says, Wicked expands on more of the original authors multiple stories and multifaceted/multidimensional characters instead of the one story featuring Dorothy. I think it’s a toss up for me.

And Elphaba wow she is a incredible character! (Honestly I like her a lot more than dorothy) literally everyone hated her just for her skin even her own family, people treated her like trash, the people wanted to kill her , people didn’t understand her , she misfit and she passed a lot trough her life and she still managed to defy gravity. She is really my inspiration and the reason I love witches Also in my opinion wicked , sure it came after The wizard of oz but in my opinion wicked created their OWN legacy. So I will always Defying Gravity! 💚

Jesus Christ is the way truth and life. This is the most important truth in existence. To understand this you need to personally read at least three books of the Bible, genesis, Mathew, and one you chose yourself. As you do you must do the inner work Jesus Christ taught. Start with forgiveness. Parents are easiest. Look inside for the grievances we all build up their and practice forgiveness inside your heart. It teaches your soul something important, heals parts that have become clouded. Please trust me. If you genuinely open up your heart you discover the truth within. Jesus Christ is lord.

The character round should have go to wicked. You finally understand why everyone is like he is because of wicked. Not the way around. Really weird reasoning here. Wicked is a way better and deeper story. Not a childs tale like the wizard of oz.

I feel like wicked should have won the characters section because in the wizard of oz, there isn't much dimension to the characters but I think wicked is about characters and character growth. How Elphaba is at the beginning, middle, and end of the play is completely different. The same for Glinda

i much prefer Wicked than The Wizard of Oz, because Wicked explains the real story as to why and how Dorothy got to Oz, and plus it explains why Elphaba is obsessed with the shoes. Plus Wicked gives the true backstory on the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion.

Wicked has a far more dynamic characters. For instance they all go through some type of major shift. The wizard of oz. Has a lot more basic and shallow characters that don't do though such dynamic changes. So the win goes to Wicked. The Music win also goes to wicked obviously. The Wicked is applicable to all ages where as the wizard of oz is just a childhood movie. So there for the plot is better. A lot of movies have tackled be your self. And I find Wicked as a better theme. Wicked will always be better.

The Wizard of Oz can be appreciated from many levels- symbolic, cultural commentary, comedy, drama, a snap shot of vaudeville, cinematography triumph, psychological commentary, etc. - whereas IMO, Wicked is mirror a straightforward story which has not so many levels to be enjoyed. The Wicked book has more, but most of that hot flattened out in the stage adaptation. For example, the Dragon of Time, and all that it symbolizes, is referenced a few times, but it's not really incorporated into the play as much as in the book

@yummyyum367193 жыл бұрын
For me personally it's no contest. "Wizard of Oz" by a mile, specifically because of the music. That being said I understand how to book for "Wicked" suits modern tastes better than the script for the 1939 film. The question that remains however is this: Will "Wicked" enjoy classic status the way "Wizard of Oz" does? I think not, again, because of the music. Mojo makes a statement that is highly misleading about the film. They say "the songs stop." Yes. The songs stop, and are replaced by sophisticated film scoring, very much in the way one expects a movie to utilize. Other than that brief moment that quotes Mussorgsky's Night On Bald Mountain the rest of the film score is part of the story telling because it uses the Leitmotif method that identifies characters with a short musical theme. This is masterfully done throughout the 2nd half of the film, thus replacing the "songs". "Wicked" by contrast just has "songs". I predict that the musical style of "Wicked" will be very dated 80 years from now whereas "Oz" will still be a classic 160 years after its production.

As a theatre Kid who grew up with The Wizard of Oz coursing through my veins curtesy of me being introduced to it when I was three or four, there was always something intriguing about Wicked. I appreciate the classics but Wicked has always been so much more appealing to me because of the extent of the characters and plot. Especially all the twists and turns throughout the musical. It, along with the incredible music, always has me on the edge of my seat. I saw The Wizard of Oz differently after watching Wicked, especially because I now know that the Scarecrow is in love with the Witch. Also I love Idina and Kristin. Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk
