This series feels like the anime equivalent to “Mao Mao” & “Dave the Barbarian,” and now I want to see it ASAP

Honestly, if this had made the jump to west and with an English dub, I could totally see this being a cult classic like Dragon Half.

Manga readers update! They added a dozen or so new chapters after 3-4 years of inactivity! I think they finished the cliff hanger arc the manga was left on in the dub for so long!

honestly I would have *loved* to see more of Ozanari Dungeon in anime form. The characters were so entertaining and the worldbuilding actually had something going for it.

Absolutely agree, for a 3 part series this show really had some spirit.

This manga is CRIMINALLY underrated. It starts off silly and fun and by the final chapter its Armageddon with deep lore on how this universe's Conan The Barbarian raised Mocha and the trade guild empire he walked away from in true Conan style. I don't think it ever finished though, so the manga is stuck in a nail biting cliff hanger ;_;

oh yeah, this anime was released in Brazil and aired on primetime tv, here they were called "Jovens Guerreiros" I'm surprised it wasn't distributed in the US, taking into account that most of our animes were imported from the US, and not directly from Japan.

11:04 "Lack of conciseness"? That's because you are young 😏 (not insult) In olden days mix of sword&sorcery and sci fi was common for East and West. Outlanders manga/ova, Might & Magic series, Wizardry games, Ultima games etc. Swords, knights, dragons, lasers, spaceships in one story was very much normal.

This looks SO much like a Fantasy Counterpart to Johji Manabe's works from the same era. Then I checked; Manabe and Koyama were buddies, of course they were! (The folks at "Confurance 4" back round 1993 labeled vol 1 "Not Johji Manabe, but an incredible simulation!") Now given that Manabe's anime adaptions have been so rough to say the least, this might be the best Manabe adaption ever done, as well as its own merits. Interesting to find Kyoko Tengu voicing a sidekick to a Kei-like Character, though if Koyama is half the Kei-fan Manabe is, I'll bet it was a special request. Right before the Japanese implosion is where OVAs went to die, there are a LOT of fairly well-known works from this era that have never been adapted, I think finding rights may be half the problem

Huh-the contrast of the sci-fi wind temple and the fantasy setting sort of brings to mind the “French Mistake” scene from Blazing Saddles.

This REALLY reminds me of something Joji Manabe would make, especially with that main character girl design and the furries. Gives me vibes not unlike Outlanders, Capricorn, or Caravan Kidd Outlanders and Capricorn would also make for great episodes imo since the guy’s manga work is pretty interesting as some of the first manga to be translated and released officially in the states, and the OVA adaptations of said manga were not so well liked by the man himself. Outlanders in particular is interesting for receiving TWO different dubs with one by U.S. Renditions in the 90s and one by CPM…in the 2000s. Well after the anime was at its height of popularity state-side. But anyways, me getting side-tracked aside, I definitely should check out this manga series next time I’m ordering from overseas.

@noahmeyer97562 жыл бұрын
You can attribute that to the involvement of Minoru Maeda (went to ANN to confirm), Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball's first series animation director. I'm assuming the Ozanari OVA was produced around the time of the TV Cell Arc when Maeda was on his way out of DBZ.

Any chance you'll review Maze? It's another now-forgotten early-90s high-fantasy-kitchen-sink anime, but one that draws from some dramatically different sources (the setting features human-like characters who become biomechs, surrounding their pilots with exposed organs to use as controls; the main antagonist sits on a giant throne made of her own hair; the protagonist is an amnesiac with a split personality who changes sex based on the phase of the moon), & it's equal parts extremely creative and extremely lazy in execution. There *was* a US release -- but only of the 3-episode spinoff hentai OVA (which is something Central Park Media also did with the Knights of Ramune franchise -- weird that it happened at least twice), which means it was at least popular enough in Japan to justify a spinoff aimed at an adult demographic.

Someday because Maze's concept is too good not to do a video on.
@thatonelucariofan5032 жыл бұрын
Maze is really interesting, I also have a lot of respect and fascination for the series’ original writer (he also wrote the original source material for Mon Colle Knights, and Sorcerer Hunters (source material) and Saber Marionette J). The weirdest/coolest part of his writing is that he seems to really enjoy featuring gay male characters. All of these works I listed, include them. It’s a rare thing to see outright gay dudes in 90s anime I hardly ever see it outside of shojo and while his depictions of them vary (the ones in Mon Colle and in Marionette J get kinda vilified, albeit humorously) but still it’s just interesting as heck to me.
@SlapstickGenius232 жыл бұрын
Maze is also a light novel series.
@sarysa14 күн бұрын
"D rank" in that manga panel?? Was that a much later translation embellishment? That concept didn't really take off in video games until the mid 90s. If that was in the original Japanese, this series really would have quite the legacy. Edit: Mid 90s. The first Dragon Quest game to have ranked tournaments was VI, and Dragon Quest is a hugely trendsetting series for JRPGs in general

I always love this little anime. The villains really steal the show in my opinion. I also disagree with your sentiments about the setting being too inconsistent. To me that's a positive factor as it helps the show to feel less generic.
@Acesahn2 жыл бұрын
I never saw it as inconsistent either. It had a society ending event and we're living in an anime meets Fallout type of world so its believable there's magic tech right next to knights and barbarians.
