And it's one of the best NES games ever. Released 30 years after the console was relevant.
@Bro32563 ай бұрын
should note that the game uses the Namco 106 mapper which features expansion audio, the same expansion audio that is also featured in games such as Megami Tensei II, Erika to Satoru no Yume Bouken, and Mappy Kids the cartridge pins for said expansion audio is only present on Famicom consoles, as NES consoles removed the feature so unless you plan on playing the game on Famicom than you'll have to modify the NES to re-enable expansion audio otherwise you'll be missing quite a bit of the games sound this is mainly if you intend on playing via original hardware, you won't have to worry about any of this in the emulation realm

This is pretty off topic, but I'm glad to finally see Namco Museum DS acknowledged; I was honestly worried you hadn't played it. I grew up with it, and it's part of why I enjoy Namco's classics to this day. More importantly though, it's a really good Namco Museum title. A ton of artwork, manuals, etc., a great sound test, the ability to play Xevious Plus (and Dig Dug 2 Plus if i remember the other one right), just the coolest intro, controlling the DIP switches of the arcade board, and, in my opinion, the best version of Pac Man Vs. M2 cares a lot as you've mentioned before, and it shows in Namco Museum DS in ways i wish would return in future Namco Museum games.

The Problem with Pac-Man 99 is that Pac-Man (At least the original version) wasn't really a versus focused game. So they had to add things to Pac-Man 99 which does work, but... does it? On the other hand, in Tetris 99 and F-Zero 99, in the originals you were always going against other players (Unless if you played a different mode), so the games themselves only had to be altered a little to fit with the 99 formula

NES/Famicom Pac-Man also has a couple of significant bugs that affect play. When monsters switch from Chase to Scatter mode, they don't reverse direction, which means you can't easily tell when they switch. And, crucially, when the game reaches maximum difficulty (at the 8th Key board instead of 9th like the arcade), there's a bug that makes the initial Scatter period much longer than usual. It's really noticeable when you get to it, the ghosts circle the corners of the board for quite a while before they start chasing you!

Shoutouts to Hamster's Arcade Archive ports in general. They've been getting arcade perfect ports to consoles, mainly Switch, for years with all kinds of games. They focus heavily on STG's, but there's a shit ton of classics ported by them on Switch and not one is a botched job. They've given clean access to stuff that I would never think to hit consoles at all let alone with quality. Next to M2, they're doing an excellent at making some of these games accessible and preserving them. The fact that In the Hunt, Xexex, and X-Multiply are just on Switch for $7 a pop is crazy to me. Arcade games are notoriously finnicky for normal fan emulation and tracking down real hardware is not only difficult but more expensive than owning a PC usually. Go browse their offerings.
