There are multiple tendons in the foot. Extensors are the ones which move the toes upwards. So these tendons are the pulleys which moves individual parts of the foot. There are multiple tendons. These tendons can get inflamed due to various reasons. It might be a onetime traumatic injury or repetitive stress due to walking, jumping or any sports related activities. So basically tendonitis means there is pain and swelling at a particular anatomical location of that tendon. So when there is pain and any inflammation, any movement of that tendon, that inflammation is because of repetitive stress on it that can be due to various activities. Generally, repetitive stress on that tendon causes extensor tendonitis. The best and the important treatment for tendonitis is the relative rest to that tendon. This is achieved by different ways of splinting, compressive bandage or in extreme cases a cast also. Basically we have to rest that part. Once it is rested, the repetitive stress comes down the inflammation subsides over a period of time. Or it can be treated with adjuvant therapy, with ice therapy, cold therapy or physiotherapeutic physical modalities like ultrasound, IFTs. There is one more modality called shock wave therapy which has a better efficacy than IFTs and ultrasounds. Very rarely in chronic conditions, if the inflammation continues, it becomes a chronic tendonitis. If we find any compressive signs, we might contemplate a surgical release of it.
