The reason the editing is so strange, the pacing is off and the film feels so disjointed is that Sony got cold feet over the backlash and cut the film to absolute shreds. Over half of the movie was cut and reshot and re-edited to what we got. Originally it delved a lot deeper into Slenderman manipulating and terrorising the girls mentally, eventually pushing his victims to commit suicide brutally in front of others to spread the curse. The film would never have been great, but if Sony hadn’t torn it apart it could have been an enjoyable teen horror movie at least.

Bro, I couldn't imagine being around 12 years old and being stabbed by my best friends in the woods, let alone 19 times. Even more so I can't imagine crawling to a road in that condition. I can't imagine the amount of potential PTSD or other mental issues that entire situation might give a child. They were a really strong kid, mad love to them, I really hope they are doing relatively okay these days.

O... i almost forgot... when you smeared HP Lovecraft's face, it was no less than a revelation! i confess i had never made that connection... beautifully done!

@Painticus4 жыл бұрын
That's a great example of unintentional reverse-psychology! As for Supernatural - that depends if you're talking about the TV show, or the concept. I've not actually watched the show, but I have been recommended it several times! I think the fact that it's like, 15 seasons long is what makes me put it off. But I may get around to it if it's worth the time! As for the concept of the supernatural, I'll have to get back to you on that. The skinwalkers need walking.
@julian04514 жыл бұрын
@@Painticus lmao yeah. It's a long series. But tbh the first season still holds up rather well, and the lore is pretty cool. If the first 2 episodes don't hook you you can just drop it, because while it evolves massively it still retains that basic formula for the most part

Coming up here since Slender: The Arrival is now getting an Unreal Engine remaster now til this October, you know people say this movie came out too late into the Slender Man trend, but you know what I'll be blunt about that? It doesn't matter how late it is, all it matters is how good this can be, but this isn't. At the end of the day, seeing whatever the hell the cobbled up with this one is a disgrace for the character itself. Like the man's got potential, come on it's easy studios! 😭 I will say this movie coulda rather gone for all ages as the victims of him, old, young, whatever, not generically just teenagers. Then also lean on to the influences from Marble Hornets (hell take its found footage element as well, wouldn't matter how "outdated" that be), like there's everything in front of you. But nope, instead it's a demon plus slasher movie with no charm, and ripping on The Ring.

So this movie is about trees? Got it. I still have a great fondness for creepypastas, in spite of how bad some of them are. Discovering it was the first time I found a community actively dedicated to horror, and considering how few friends I had in real life who were interested in the genre that meant a great deal to me. And some stories are genuinely good, character concepts could be interesting even when poorly executed and sometimes it's just fun to read something that's written so terribly. As to this film, when it was announced I thought it was in poor taste considering the stabbing and definitely released way too late to be relevant. I haven't watched it yet but there's a part of me that's still curious so I think I'll check it out, if only for those good moments that you pointed out. In fact, I might go watch it now.

Ah, creepypastas. That's something I haven't looked at for a while by now. Why? Because, at the time I abandoned the idea of reading creepypastas, the whole net was filled with edgy and "cool" creepypasta wannabes of questionable quality. Oh Gods above, all the "the killer" OC's and fanfictions, formation of a fandom by pubescent kids. Ah, the nostalgia. I am gonna go eat an apple now

Wasn't there supposed to be an interview link in the description? Hmm... Anyway, the out of touch studio pandering to an audience they don't understand is enough reason to hate a movie if you ask me. Regardless of the quality of said film. PS. I like how you got the actual Chills to narrate that section of your video.
@Painticus4 жыл бұрын
There was an interview, but for whatever reason I decided to hide it right at the end. Because I'm a muglin. Here you go! www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ruzqr That's a fair point about pandering - and unfortunately that applies to a significant amount of movies both in and outside of Hollywood. Chills was a really chill guy about being in the video, I didn't even ask him and he still appeared in it. Wild.

Great video, I like how you point out the good things in an otherwise not very good (or very not good) movie. You should make more horror movie reviews, about both good and bad ones. I, for one, am interested in which movies you consider as good Lovecraftian or cosmic horror.

Hmm, I think comparing to Cosmic Horror isn't too wrong, just the movie does a poor job incorporating Slender Man lore from the main source and fucking it, smashing it with pastiches on top of it. Tbf: Comparing to King in Yellow is probably better as it deals with cognitohazard and memetic better than Lovecraft. But this IMHO.
@Painticus4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the movie definitely avoidsmost cosmic horror themes like it's a plague - which is a shame, because it's got the source material to support it! The King in Yellow is a good comparison actually - good catch!

@@Painticus The only difference between KiY and SM. SM doesn't have a bias when it comes to "ah, a cryptic drawing", there is no resistance and it's alive. While in KiY, the target is guilty, tainted by guilt, they will become a "puppet" of sorts, thinking they are the King. But a pure heart and innocent is ignored and break the influence. In Chambers' stories, you don't see the King, only mentioned. Cthulhu mythos-wise: I don't know. 🤷🏻♂️ When Derleth touches things it turns to shit.

On the one hand, yeah, this movie came out *way* too late to ride the Slender Man fame. But then, Always Watching: a Marble Hornets Story came out in 2015, which A) came out like, a year after the Slender Man stabbing (so, pretty tone deaf there, guys), and B) was also a *terrible* movie from what I've heard. So, silver lining?
