"...color is a secondary aspect of building the picture. What really creates realism, sence of volume, weight and drama in the figure is the correct use of light and it's values. Then color brings the powerful emtional part of the experience, the sence of temperature and relation with environment."

I did Zenithal highlights either drybrushed in, or spray painted on for years. You talked about using white inks to do it and I was a skeptical because of the way inks work. But having a white ink from my inktense set, I tried to brush in some white ink on a miniature. Wow. I will doubt you no more. White ink is amazing and works like magic for zenithal! It also has a side benefit of creating a grayscale of its own, that is harder to achieve with drybrushing. Thank you very much for you advice and your work!

Same here... in my teens there was white dwarf to stare at and armenist mini photos. I only wet the brush with my mouth when grabbing paint straight from the pot, working the excess on a News paper before applying the thick paint on my minis as thin as I could... the hobby sure has changed since then... roughly 24 years ago.

Your approach to painting miniatures is what makes this hobby for me; it‘s what keeps me painting and trying new things, not just following „recipes“ regarding amounts of drops or SPECIFIC paints or whatever. „Use a vibrant red for this“ is so much more sincere and paradoxically so much more exact than saying „use red“... Whenever I watch one of your videos it’s like I‘m watching something from another artistic level... so many other painting channels on KZbin are just so... I don‘t know, „normal“? Just „the usual“? „Boring“? A mix of all these things. By no means do I say this to bash the other mini-painting channels, there are many that I like, but NJM is just so unique; your finished miniatures look like a work of art. There are many other painters that paint minis well, but many don‘t care at all for making their style approachable. Hell, if I paint a mini, I always ask myself: „What would Marco do? What would his way of making this thing UNIQUE be?“ And I always find inspiration in your videos. I don‘t want „battle-ready“ Blood Angels in 10 minutes, I want amazing shiny red bloody bois, like you did in the last video. Using so many different tools, techniques and approaches without saying „You have to use THIS brand or THIS technique exactly as I do.“ You always explain WHY you do things, not only HOW, and break it down into DOABLE things for people coming back into the hobby. It‘s not about obsessing about the left arm of your model and have 27 skin tones, layer them and then they look good, it‘s about the undercoat, interesting moduleyshon ( :D I just LOVE your accent, attitude and energy, your HELLOOO GUUUYS always makes me happy ;) ), and then an oil wash to top it of. No Witch craft, no BS, just the well thought out usage of your tools. And in the end, all of your stuff looks SO much more interesting to me than 99.9% of literally ANYTHING else in this hobby. It‘s like watching what Raphael or Michelangelo would do if they were alive today and miniature-loving nerds. Just masterful! And by doing it the way you do, you keep motivating me; I try to approach miniature-painting in a way as close to yours as possible because I believe that if you aim close to the bull‘s eye, you will eventually hit it much easier than if you just aim for the whole target blindly and hope for the best. Thank you for that ;) I hope that one day I can come up with as genius ideas in the mini-painting hobby as you ;) be it a really unique warband, a whole army or just a single model. Thanks for uploading these KNOWLEDGE-BOMBS every week, it makes these COVID-times really so much more bearable. I can really feel your enthusiasm and love for the subject, it’s just a joy every time. Alright, that‘s a long comment, but it‘s sincere and honest ;) Already looking forward to the next one (and now back to binge-watching all your other videos until then, as usual, albeit this time including the amazing grisaille-info)!

Very cool. I have always been just an above average quality army painter. I am all about speed like your last video. Accomplishing something that looks too good for the time spent. For a very long time my process has been Zenithal, highlight with white, glaze color, clean up, done. Very similar to this. it’s actually the only way I know how to paint. It works super well for painting 400+ models a year to an above average standard.

"The video took a philosophical turn..." No disrespect to say Marco that for all my appetite to improve the results of my mini painting, I'd never have imagined myself getting drawn into an informed and educated deconstruction of Carravagio's technique in a particular painting. How on earth did you manage to bring me here Marco??? How on earth did you get me focussed on greyscale value sketching the composition's focus over a warm brown background sketch and then glazing fleshtones on top with an appreciation of how doing it that way had brought such luminosity to the skin??? It's not that I watched it, I'd have looked at it as part of a vid that showed me better mini painting. I'd have done that. It's that I peered at it and appreciated the skill, the process and the vision that helped him to realise the scene that way. That in this small way, Carravagio is now helping me appreciate and visualise how I can bring more radiance to the important focal areas of a model. That now I can create a quality of light that before was outside my range and the province of much better painters than I. Of course much of the time I'll get it wrong, it'll look crap and overdone and I'll have redo it more than once. BUT, I'll get better with practice, and that particular door is today open a crack, I can feel the breeze from it. I'm not in the room but I can smell the master's turpentine You, surprise me over and over, Marco, I've seen Carravagio's work, stood in front of it and remember being struck by the power of it. A quality of light he brings to the people in his paintings that seemed a mysteriously high art, magical. The Cucifixion of Saint Peter for the Cirasi Chapel I've (only) seen in coffee table books and I've only appreciated it as art, the skin and that face particularly, but I've never imagined relating it in any way to my painting. It's high art, not tabletop hobby. Doesn't look like the same approach to me, I'm not saying that, but as a painter he'd have a range of superbly executed approaches for any subject. But till now I've only thought of Wow, never thought of how, never smelled the turpentine. You did that for me, not even Carravagio had done that, took Marco the joyful, passionate, skilled teacher - still don't like your Blood Angels tho ;0P

Great job! I've only used the cenital lighting sparsly and didn't like it much, I thought it wasn't my style of painting. But Applying a Grisalla is avery neat concept indeed. I will for sure try it!
