I played with it at a camera store last week. Still under embargo - but that viewfinder!! Best I have ever seen. And they threw a 200mm Leica Lens on it and the combined stabilization was absolutely ridiculous. At 200mm it was like I had the darn thing on a tripod. Of course that Leica lens is $6000.00 but who's counting ;)

Got mine today. Wow. Ther build alone is by far the best camera I've ever used. IQ us also or of this world. Other than the 50mm lens pricing seems right. Their 70-200 is right around the same price as the Canon L.

Love the build quality , it smoked All mirrorles FF Camera from other manufactures eventhough Its the biggest FF mirrorless Camera next to Leica SL but i love it actually . I guess Panasonic doesnt cares about the size because they never had a Fullframe DSLR Camera to complete as contrary to Nikon , Canon , and Sony which they bit shy If their mirrorless FF Camera bigger than their own DSLR 😅😅😅

Serious looking camera, Gary. Large and in charge. So it's still contrast based AF? It's disappointing that a company capable of such great video, just can't nail the focus. Especially in the $3k range. Awesome looking lens too.

Contrast detect AF killed this camera right out of the gate. This camera is doomed from the start and Panasonic should have known better before getting lazy with lack of design and research. AF is super important and neglected. No fully articulating screen, so un-panasonic like, another huge oversight. They are now following Canon's lead. Once again, in video mode it will be a touch to focus only affair because anyone in their right mind would never use full AF on a Panasonic camera. It is a video destroyer. Disgusting I have to say. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge panny fan. My only 2 cameras I own are a G7 and GX85. These comments are coming from a very disappointed consumer that would never consider such a flawed camera. I don't care how good the low light performance is. Not having phase detect AF makes it fiddly and cumbersome. With the price point of the g7 and gx85, I can live with touch to focus, but not with this super expensive full frame camera that is not competing whatsoever with the current stiff competition.
@jeffhalebopp
@jeffhalebopp 5 жыл бұрын
God Drink Visuals, I agree that Contrast detect AF works well for photos. I hope in the future that Panasonic considers PDAF in the future for a true hybrid camera. I still think that they are going to lose a lot of sales from consumers going to the 3 other brands. The only thing that will set Panasonic apart from the competitors is spectacular video with PDAF.
@Atemoya26
@Atemoya26 5 жыл бұрын
Sony, Nikon, and Canon all has banding with PDAF. CDAF is really good for photo. If they follow Canon lead, they wouldn't have the best EVF, IBIS, 4K60, dual card slot and using recycle sensor and charge $2300 for it
@katniss4450
@katniss4450 5 жыл бұрын
This camera has the best user interface, the best EVF, the best ISO performance, the best IBIS, and the best video quality in the world right now. No other camera on earth can shoot 4k60p for 30 minutes with 6 stops of IS performance. I've seen the real world samples of videos from two separate weddings and when the focus is right, the quality is unsurpassed. But yes, you hit the nail on the head. THE GODFORSAKEN POS CDAF. The lack of a flipout screen (you'd be a damn fool to waste 2500 on a vlogging camera that weights 9258 pounds like this), having to pay for some firmware, and the ridiculous prices of Leica lenses are small niggles hardly worth that much angst, but the AF is the dealbreaker.

Nice unboxing video! Actually, I think is a pretty solid launch, there is a big bunch of lenses available: 3 Panasonic, 11 Sigmas which are considered native L mount + the adapter that unlock access to canon glass and also 8 ultra-expensive native Leica glass, it is important to keep the firmware updated, the G9 and GH5 firmware updates did a big improvement on autofocus if you compare the release firmware with the new one is like a totally different camera after the update.

The first honest review that I can believe in. No in the pocket, or whining this that whatever. Valuable information for us creators. The S series needs to be so much. It cost so much. I am hoping DFD is not so flakey as with MFT. I don't know, but finally a nice Full Frame by Panasonic. The fun comparison will be against A7 mk.3, more other heavy artillery. Great this is in your hands TEDD! Hoping it does well.

Yikes! It is really large -- I wonder if there is a technical reason for that? Obviously Sony/Canon/Nikon can make (somewhat) smaller full-frame mirrorless cameras. Does Panasonic think that bigger is better? And isn't the L-mount already used on some Leica glass (yes, $$$$$) -- no adapter needed? No flip-out screen? Hmmm. Well, I hope that it works well for you at NAB -- I'd like to see you use it like a GoPro helmet cam.... :-)

Looks pretty damn good, still waiting for a video test from you. Despite this, it is a good video! It was exciting to unbox this beauty of a camera. The build quality seems to be better than Sony, the specs are way better than on Canon Eos and only 200$ more expensive. I think that for Panasonic S1, the biggest rival in terms of video quality and overall quality and features is Nikon Z6. For Panasonic the biggest issue is lack of cheaper lenses, because this new Panasonic lenses are really expensive not to mention about Leica lenses. Still waitng for more affordable Sigma lenses fot this l-mount. The autofocus seems to be a little bit slow, but good enough and it will definitely be better afrer S1 firmware updates. Also I think that there are some adapters which you can use to connect some other brands lenses but only for manual focus. Best Regards :)

I wonder if the lenses need to be calibrated to the panasonics cameras kind of like the old nikon cameras where they have to adjust per lens due to over focus or under focusing that would occur as the default values were not correct so that caused the focusing on video issues

Problems with S1: Contrast AF Sucks, Removed the famous flippy screen everyone loved, removed VFR mode everyone loved, 8 bit and ''PAID UPGRADE'' for 10 bit (How cheap do you have to be to charge for a damn upgrade that should already be included, every other company offers upgrades for free), 4k60 crop, too heavy and big, No intent in implementing the ALL-I 400mbps. No one will say the video quality is bad but it just has way too many compromises for that price tag. It is literally an unfinished product, at least wait until july to buy it when it is complete.

The camera shoots internal 10bit 420 30p in HLG /external 10bit 422 60p both offering over 12 stops dynamic range, more than most brands LOG offerings. VLOG will maximise this to more than 14stops of DR. The camera also shots 30p internal with no time limits or overheating problems. The targeted users will easily justify $200 premium.

Mitchell McMillan I know, i have it. So you like hunting AF while shooting? No VFR control? No waveform? No flip out screen, please explain why the heck they would do that knowing what half or more of S1 shooters will be doing with this camera. You trust this company with your money way too much. IBIS is completely retarded for serious film work but meh, B-Rollers are happy. And don't get me started on the overpriced lenses. (And all of this coming from a Panasonic fanboy, all other companies right now are retarded . Besides Sony inventing new impressive stuff and Fujifilm offering best bang for the buck hybrid cameras. All in the world of affordable equipment)

@@JT1993GG Neither Sony or Fuji offer you full articulating screen, nor waveform, nor 180fps. The S1 is not a GH replacement. As for focus I haven't experienced any hunting since V0.6 using subject recognition of tracking mode. What lens are you using? When shooting with a external recorder you get more movement of your screen vs fully articulating. It sounds like the cameras not for you no need to take it personally, but I can tell you a lot of wedding filmmakers that appreciate the IBIS speeding up their shots.

SpiffyVidz the name is literal. There is no mirror flipping around inside the camera, reflecting what the sensor sees in your viewfinder. The mirror mechanism is delicate and expensive. Enter the mirrorless. Yank out the mirror and the mechanical gizmos to flip it up and out of the way. Instead of seeing the subject through a reflection through the mirror, a mini lcd screen becomes your viewfinder.

Not impressed. No flippy screen and WAY too large.

DP ie too large for what?? Mirrorless camera’s do not need to be small and light. It is probably damn comfortable and it has AMAZING ergonomics and controls. And flippy screens are for vlogging. This is not a vlogging camera, it is a semi pro/pro stills camera with pretty solid video capability. Seems like you are not the target market and are judging it with bias.
