Psychedelic Science Summit: Austin, Texas (November 1-3, 2019)
Speakers: Paul Stamets, Carl Hart, Ph.D., Rick Doblin, Ph.D., Natalie Ginsberg, M.S.W., Betty Aldworth, Liana Gillooly (Moderator)
Paul Stamets, speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher, and entrepreneur, is considered an intellectual and industry leader in fungi: habitat, medicinal use, and production. He lectures extensively to deepen the understanding and respect for the organisms that literally exist under every footstep taken on this path of life. His presentations cover a range of mushroom species and research showing how mushrooms can help the health of people and planet. His research is considered breakthrough by thought leaders for creating a paradigm shift for helping ecosystems worldwide. Paul is the author of six books, has discovered and named numerous new species of psilocybin mushrooms, and is the founder and owner of Fungi Perfecti, LLC, makers of the Host Defense Mushrooms supplement line.
Carl Hart is the Chair of the Department of Psychology at Columbia University. He is also the Ziff Professor of Psychology in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry. Professor Hart has published numerous scientific and popular articles in the area of neuropsychopharmacology and is co-author of the textbook "Drugs, Society and Human Behavior" (with Charles Ksir). His most recent book, “High Price: A Neuroscientist’s Journey of Self-Discovery That Challenges Everything You Know About Drugs and Society,” was the 2014 winner of the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. Professor Hart has appeared on multiple podcasts, radio shows, television shows, and several documentary films including the award-winning “The House I Live In.” His essays have been published in several popular publications including The New York Times, Scientific American, The Nation, Ebony, The Root, and O Globo.
Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master's thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. He founded MAPS in 1986, and currently resides in Boston with his wife, two dogs, and empty rooms from three children.
Natalie Lyla Ginsberg received her B.A. in history from Yale, and her master’s of social work (MSW) from Columbia. At MAPS, Natalie works to disentangle science from political partisanship on Capitol Hill, at the United Nations, and beyond. She is also co-developing a psychedelic peace-building study with Imperial College, working with Palestinians and Israelis. Natalie is particularly inspired by the potential of psychedelics for healing systemic, intergenerational trauma, for building empathy and community, and for inspiring creative and innovative solutions.
Betty Aldworth is the Executive Director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy where she supports students and young people united to build a more sensible future through drug policies rooted in safety, justice, and education. Since joining the team in 2014, she has led the organization through its most substantial growth period: SSDP’s member base and campuses have doubled, global presence has quadrupled, and as a result the policy change and education efforts members are leading have grown immeasurably.
Liana Sananda Gillooly, Development Officer at MAPS, is a lifetime activist for social justice, drug policy reform, ending war, and the environment. Before joining MAPS, Liana worked as Outreach Manager for a prominent cannabis investment and market research firm, where she helped grow the accredited investor network, advocated for legalization, and supported the work of Marijuana Policy Project. She has worked in event, festival, and film production, as well as artist representation, art curation, and art creation. She has been a featured speaker at numerous events, lobbied Congress, lectured MBA students, and given a TedX talk. She is an experienced meditator and trained death midwife.

I want to add that the lady talking about how "cannabis social clubs in Spain must be beautiful" is clearly uninformed on the subject. I frequent said clubs, and they are simply coffee shops where you can smoke. They cannot legally be a store, so they're a "club" where you "contribute" by converting your money into "credits" that are used to "get" the cannabis. But it's a cannabis coffee shop exactly like in the Netherlands. Not a hippy thing.

@@genericx2347 I've already tried all that. My diet is completely plant based and gluten free.. I still get excruciating pain multiple times a day, everyday.. I don't really think that lowering gluten intake is going to stop pain that heavy doses of morphine can't even do anything for. Either way, I've already tried it for over a year now and it's not worked at all. I appreciate the suggestion, though.

@@DeMiTriDreams Don't know how old you are or what kinda place you live but you could try putting some feelers out with people you trust not to blab if they know anywhere to get what you need. Research microdosing.

Kind of sad that the panel can't talk for an hour about MAPS and psychedelics without mentioning "hate", "white supremacy", "feminism", "patriarchy", "equity" and all those political buzzwords. Can't you focus on the subject at hand instead of spouting marxist stuff? You talk a lot about being inclusive, but you don't seem to allow discourse from outside your bubble.

That's not marxist, Claude. When you don't know what the hell you're talking about then just shut up and listen.
