Hi Hilary! Suggestion for your pantry: take out those shelves and have someone build U-shaped narrow shelves to take advantage of the depth of the space. That way, you could store things on the sides as well as the back of the pantry. Narrow shelves are best so you can see what you have and it stays organized. One of my friends did this in her pantry and it worked out great.

I agree,the most efficient pantries that I have had over the years was where the shelves were “Two cans deep” and “Two cans high”.🙌🏻
@heidireynolds55989 ай бұрын
Oh my goodness, my thoughts exactly! I did the same with a pantry we had in our last home & it made it so much more efficient for seeing what is in there. Also, our current home has a storage closet just for cleaning supplies (we run a small B & B) & it has a strip on the side wall with grippers that look a little like clothespins that open up when you push a mop/broom handle at the front of the “clothespin”. So, no need for a hole or string on the handle in order to hang it. Also, maybe you could put it on the inside of the pantry door, instead of on the wall in the pantry?
@jodimurphy84409 ай бұрын
I use on of those "snap in" type holders for my items. Hanging it just out in the mudroom might be a good option. Still close, but not clogging up the prime pantry real estate.

I don’t know if this idea would work for you but I had a similar pantry and I switched the usage of it. I put my cookware, serving ware, dishes, etc in the pantry and used my cabinet space that previously housed those items for food storage. It felt a little weird at first but I love it. I see exactly what I have and much less gets wasted. I’m all about using the spaces I have based on priority of use over what they were “designated” for. I had to periodically tweak it at first but it’s been a game changer for us. Love your videos and your style. You are my most favorite KZbinr by far. Your channel is authentic to your life. Love it!

Thanks so much for being here! I have tried that in a way, we used to store pantry items in the island, but then our dishes had to be a higher cabinet. Hi Hilary, I too can get the winter blues. One January I checked out a bunch of books on color. Some were art, some were fashion, and some were color theory. I steeped myself in those glorious colors and it really helped. One tip: NEVER plant ivy outside, especially near your home. It's invasive and aggressive and will crowd out other plants. Its tendrils crawl up brick or a tree and over time they'll penetrate the mortar and brick or bark and stem. Eventually, they can destroy what they're climbing on. You keep your home so beautifully. Thank you for sharing it and your family with us! Sending sunshine from Virginia

My blues come from lots of clutter and my Granddaughter (15) just asked me to reorganize our pantry. It's a nice size, but once you get more than it can hold, the stuff goes wherever you can fit it and not in the section it should be in. I just got rid of all the old, stale and expired things and it's looking better. I've been using the dollar tree bins for years, but would like some nice baskets.

Since the hutch has windows on the upper doors the lg mason jars with dry staples looks nice and uniform. Not cluttered. I added a tray on the top to hold my cookbooks for even more storage. I completely relate to the winter blues, living in the Midwest most of my life, I get it. I find having fresh bright flowers from the grocery store really help and it’s a fun creative outlet if you do several arrangements and make sure to put one by your bedside. I also burn tropical (pineapple, coconut, hibiscus) scented candles all winter or florals like lilac or rose and I make sure to eat and cook with all the citrus flavors lemon water, lemon muffins, lime crema on everything, and lots of warm spicy foods like curry really help keep my mood boosted. I also use a happy lamp and last year I brought in the kiddie pool and filled it with sand and stuck it, my portable heater, and happy lamp in the basement and would sit with my feet in the sand with my happy light on before I got in the shower in the morning. Whatever brings you the most joy try to incorporate it daily. Plants always help too!

I agree with some of the other commenters: definitely use the back of the door. Since your pantry is so deep, there won't be an obstruction caused by things hanging on the door when you close it. That would be a wonderful place for your broom, mop, and aprons. When in doubt find vertical, flat surfaces. =) I'd also move the serving dishes to a higher shelf so that lower shelf can be used for more frequently-used items. You could use the hanging pegs you already have to hang a clear pocket organizer to keep snacks and other small pantry items so that you can see what you have and also make them accessible. It would lie mostly flat to the wall and give you so much space and visibility for things that could get lost in your wire bins.

Possibly make shelves with slides on them. Use the shelving that you have for most of the material. We had a pantry unit , 24" wide x24" deep, in our kitchen & things constantly got lost in the back. My husband decided to make a new unit, and every shelf is now like a shallow drawer. Outside dimensions are the same. Each shelf/drawer is 19 1/2" wide & 21 1/2" deep & 3 1/2" deep. I have 6 drawers. This part of the unit is 64" inches tall. It has been fabulous! No more lost items....at least for me! My husband still can't find things. 🤷♀️😳🤣

Ugh, the pantry! I've never lived in a house that had a designated pantry. I've had to use the kitchen cupboards or bring in a small free-standing cabinet just outside the kitchen. At the moment, I live in an apt that was built in 1924. There are two shallow cupboards that are set at one end of the gally style kitchen. I'm not sure if they were meant for food storage or for books and dishes. I do use them to store food as well as one of the upper cabinets. This is the most food storage I've ever had. We have a deep narrow cabinet in our kitchen as well which was used as a broom closet when we bought the house but slowly it’s evolved into our pantry. My husband built shelves and put them on sliders which makes a huge difference since they act like drawers. We also converted a coat closet that’s in our front entry into our bulk/overflow storage. (We store our individual coats in our bedroom clothes closets.) All packaged food gets stored by category in lidded containers from the dollar store and we have large wheeled lidded containers for our dog food, treats and other dog supplies. Growing up we had one cabinet for food in our kitchen so my mom kept her overflow in a closet my dad built for her in our finished basement. I can still hear her calling down the steps for me to “toss … up the steps” when I was playing down there.

I live in a 1880 home. My apartment has lots on nooks and a few built in spaces. I made my pantry down the hall from my very small kitchen. It seems it used to be part of the original front entryway of the home. It is holds all my food and cleaning tools and supplies. I have one wall that holds the food. One wall that holds cleaning supplies and paper products/overflow items and the other wall is where the broom, mop, vacuum etc. live. The opening is the opening to that space so I made a curtain to hide the pantry. I works out well for us so far. It's not big but it works.

We are working on a puzzle too. It's definitely the hardest one we have done. It's a 2000 piece sea life puzzle. I think it might be a permanent part of my dining table 🤣

Thank you. It's funny, the sweater is definitely more red than it comes across on camera :)

Just an idea but what if you moved the cleaning items to a pretty Armoire type storage piece in your sunroom? That might free up some space in your pantry. :) I just did a pantry clean out too and it's crazy how messy they can get so quickly! :) God Bless!

What about hanging the broom and mop on the wall at the top of the stairs? You also could put a shallow set of cupboards on the side of the fireplace to hold pantry items. Also you could add something to the porch. At my husbands's childhood home they bumped a cupboard in the wasted space above the stairs. It is a very clever use of unused space.

Have you thought of extending the pantry to the end of your cupboards? Then the door could be moved so you enter the pantry and it’s on your left. That would allow you to hang your brooms on the back of the door or on the wall away from any food. You could also add narrow shelfs along that wall to the back where the larger shelves are. Any large items could be stored on those large shelves like your microwave, food processor, mixer, bread maker, etc.. hopefully this makes sense.

Hi Hillary, have you ever tried Rosmund Pilcher books? I really liked them. She’s a English/Scottish author.

I haven't, thank you for the suggestion!

A zip tie would make your mop hangable. I live in an old house with no pantry. I found an old pie safe that holds all my canned goods and jars. The rest is either in my basement or on chrome racks in my mud room. I have five kids who are almost all grown, and I cook a couple of times a week for them and their significant others. We are closet “twins”, as my master bedroom closets are built on either side of a fireplace. I love making a home, and serving my family.

Our pantry has shelves that roll out so that we can reach the back items. Maybe you can look into installing something like that.

I would move the brooms and aprons to the inside of door so that when open they are out of way

I’m fortunate enough to have a huge walk-in pantry but it is getting cluttered as I feel the need to fill empty shelves! 😂😂. Have you thought about putting in a pullout pantry? You could just take out the existing shelves and then put in a pullout pantry in its place.
