I work at a barnes and noble and the worst part about these books isn’t the millennial women buying them, it’s the 12 year old girls that purchase them WITH THEIR MOTHERS. I always look at the mothers and ask them if they’ve read these books and if they’re ok with their daughters buying it and the worst answer (and most common answer) is “of course I’ve read it, why wouldn’t I be ok with her reading it?” We used to not carry a book called Haunting Adeline and I considered that a point of pride. We got so many requests for that book (mostly from middle/highschool aged girls) that b&n caved and now we sell it in stores. The scenes in that book are horrifying. Adults reading that shit is fine, but kids shouldn’t be anywhere near it. It’s the only book I’ve had to give parents a heavy disclaimer on and highly suggest they don’t let their kids read it. I’m sure there are plenty of books in the store that are equally bad but I don’t have the time or heart to go through and scan the massive “romance” section for books that kids shouldn’t be reading

My ex was reaalllly into “romance” novels. She delved deep into them when the pandemic started and we were living together at the time. I didn’t really understand the big deal nor had I ever read one, I didn’t want to judge her for liking books, and most people look at porn anyways so it was something I chose to support because it was something I thought was benign that she enjoyed. I eventually realized that she was trying to live out a fantasy, masquerading the actual relationship she had with me, and these books became a vehicle for her own issues to carry her away. Trying to make it work with someone that has developed an unrealistic perspective of intimacy (one completely separate from actual reality) is draining as hell and abusive to keep a real person in a relationship. It’s not that she expected me to act like the men in the books, she wanted nothing to do with me intimately… It was more like she was cheating on me with the books, but also toted me around like a prop to which she could say she was living a “normal life”. F*** you, Shirley.

Idk why, but that Icebreaker had me weak from laughter. The way that papa meat was reading, and the edits had me dying. I couldn't breathe the whole time and even starting crying. My stomach and my jaws hurt from laughing so hard. Thank you, papa meat. I haven't laughed this hard in months.
