Now that Ruger has bought Marlin and is not planning to continue the Papoose, 795 or Model 60, I'm glad to see that Savage came out with this. It's a bit heavy compared to the Papoose, doesn't have higher capacity mags, and the mag release location sucks, but it's still a better gun than the Henry AR-7 which is still having some problems. Plus, it has a tool-less barrel attachment nut which is a big improvement. Good on Savage and good on Nutnfancy for reviewing this gun.

The 10/22 Takedown does not hold zero. For this reason alone, I would prefer the Papoose, 64, or AR-7 over the 10/22 takedown. Or, give me a 10/22 with a folding stock.

@@JohnB-dr8sk sorry, but I have actually owned all of these guns. The 10/22 holds a group much easier than the Marlin or AR7 did. The Ruger system is just better. The nuts required too large a wrench to keep them accurate. A wrench that is easy to loose when shit is going sideways.

@@commonsenseproductions5893 true enough, it is a bit heavier. But then again. All my bx25's work. None of the 25 rnd mags for the papoose worked at all. The AR7 I don't think it was available. The Papoose is the superior firearm. I have one in stainless/polymer. I put Tec sights on it and it is super accurate with no weight gain, the rear sight fits into the receiver groove (missing on the Savage). Magazines are cheap and available and I also have the Pro-Mag 25's. Last shot hold open and superior ergos... The Marlin is worth the extra cash, which in the scheme of things is ... chump change.

I love my papoose, Bought it about 7 years ago. Very accurate and mags always feed and it never jams. I don’t like the California disconnect linked to the magazines. It always shoots on the mark after disassembly/Set-up, not a tack driver, but suits my needs for what it is. I would buy the Ruger 10/22 take down over the 64 TD or convert one of my 10/22s. I would also consider another papoose if I were in the market, as it suits my needs for a compact truck rifle or back packing. I still have an older model marlin tube fed 22, ( first 22) it was ok until I bought my first 10/22 in 1974. You can definitely see why Ruger became the best 22 semi auto in my opinion. I think this review was great, and appreciate the spectrum of firearms that you cover. As I got older, I became able to buy better quality, so there is a need to review and rate for what the average buyer or beginner can afford.

I love the standard 10/22 but my Takedown 10/22 would not hold zero after reassembly. I found out a lot of other people are having this problem, and even my local dealer who loves 10/22s stopped carrying the Takedown model because of the zeroing issue. I would rather just get a regular 10/22 and put a folding stock on it. The Papoose is a much better survival rifle because it is lighter and always holds zero. Despite the negatives, I'm glad that Savage put out the 64 Takedown because at least it appears to be reliable and holds zero like the Papoose without weighing a ton. The Papoose is still the best though.

I wanted to put a BOK together with one of these or a 10-22 takedown. Then I realized I could just unpin the the upper from my 15-22 and it fits in my bag perfectly. The S&W is a bit heavier but 5lbs isn't bad. Plus, it has 25 round magazines and AR ergonomics. I want to put one of the carbon fiber barrels on it but they cost mire than I paid for the gun and I'm not sure how much lighter they are.

One thing cool about the 64 in general is that it has a little more of a classic feel. Longer barrel, a little heftier, and I actually find that kind of charming. But it's cool they decided to get into the takedown rifle game. Might have to pick one up. The 64G could be an awesome substitute for the Marlin mag-fed 7000 series guns w/ wood stock they decided to phase out.

My main complaint with this rifle is the die cast pot metal mags, they WILL wear out usually around 500rds. I have one with over 3k rounds through it, been a solid MOA rifle but having to replace mags every month or two is ridiculous. Savage will replace them but if some aftermarket manufacturer made high quality steel mags it would be a HOF .22 competitor to any modern .22 semi automatic rifle.

I would have loved to see Savage develop a stock for the TD that stows the barrel and a mag or two. That is a very nice feature of the AR-7. With the Savage you need to use a separate bag to put it in, to safely stow the barrel. That said, I'd still probably get the Savage over the AR-7. But why choose, get both! I have a normal 64 and have just ordered the 64 FV-SR. Heavy barrel, threaded, and picatinny scope rail for about $200. A tremendous value. Also, it's easy to get the trigger pull weight down with a Mcarbo spring kit and some other mods. My 64 has a pull weight of 2 lb 7 oz, and I could go lower but won't. Original lawyer weight was 5 lb 8 oz.

I guess this Savage and the papoose are good if you are keeping them inside a backpack when disassembled. I have a Henry Survival Rifle (AR-7) and while the stock feels awkward and fat (even more so for a left handed shooter like myself), the fact that the entire rifle breaks down and you store the barrel, receive and THREE loaded mags inside the buttstock makes up for the awkward feel. Plus it is noticeably lighter than Marlin, Ruger or Savage's takedown options. The stock iron sigts on the Henry - very good rear peep, but I wish the front blade was not so fat. Very high visibility, but just thick. But with high velocity ammo like CCI minimags, it is 100% reliable and very accurate. NOT with HYPERvelocity ammo like Velocitors though. OH, and the Henry floats. That is huge if you're on or around water.

OMG back in the day all you ever talked about was your skateboard taped Glock 17 and the POU of said firearm and how you always had it with you even in the cockpit. Lol. Here's to another decade of your videos. (:

After my comments a year ago, today I feel like a bit of a hypocrite... I stopped by a LGS and lo and behold was an unfired Savage 64 Takedown. This one has a clearly factory-done FDE cerakote or duracote finish on all the metal parts - barrel included. Looks SHARP. Plus front sight has a yellow bead to it. Price...$149 with two mags and the carry case!!! I bought it. Picked up a pair of Weaver #16 scope mounts for it (which fit perfectly). Now just need to get a long tube-type red dot or a rimfire scope for it. The feel when shouldering is way better than the Henry Survival rifle. I like that the Savage has sling mounts (Henry does not - had to get a custom single point sling that wraps around the grip for the Henry). What I don't like are the Savage mags - they feel heavy and cheap. Also Savage could've saved weight with using the Henry rifle's style of a steel barrel liner surrounded by a composite. Trigger on the Savage has A LOT of loose take up before hitting an ok break. Not good. Ok. Looking forward to seeing how it shoots.

Great review on your 64- thanks. Honestly, at $149, you still stole it. I'm not surprised that such a cheap gun has a crappy trigger and lower quality magazines. But still, any gun that's reliable and can be taken down and put in a day pack is super valuable in my book. Especially if it comes with its own carry case.

@athappyhiker Жыл бұрын
@@JohnB-dr8sk yeah. I've since put a Bushnell 4x32 Rimfire scope on it and a simple sling. it is plenty accurate at 25 - 50 yards. Very reliable with CCI Minimags. The POI stays consistent even after disassembly and reassembly. The carry case that comes with it is apparently originally made for the Savage O/U guns - 22/410 break actions, so there's lots of extra space in it and it doesn't fit real snug, but you can add velcro straps inside it to tighten things down. It makes a very innocuous package to keep in a vehicle.

Savage semi auto .22s are awesome. I remember the old videos when he had a Toyota truck and was shooting mini 14s and 10/22s. The savage model 64 takedown reminds me of a henry ar7. Support him by buying patches and a t shirt or something. One Tigris makes some pretty high quality stuff.

I started watching you for Knife reviews in 2008. I bought KT PF9 due to your carry use and video. Tried the Kahr too as well. You talked about papoose since then. Still an AR7 fan though. I bought mine in 1978 for $15. If I need more then that then Ruger 1022 TD in magpul stock

I wish someone would come out with a takedown bolt action. I do own this gun because i could not find a papoose at the time. It is pretty accurate, i have taken it apart and deburred all the meat shredding burrs on the receiver and bolt. One thing to mention it will absolutly strike the chamber face if dry fired. I have been happy with it overall.

Good review I have one and I also think that it's a great little 22 rifle just wanted to give everybody the heads up on the 20rd magazines. For the 64 they're garbage do not buy the 20 round magazines I bought several hoping that I could fix them or get them to work they only work reliably with 10 rounds in them any more than that and it's jamming failure to feed constantly. I got a model 64F from Wal-Mart a few years ago on close out for $74. I’ve shot it a few times with no issues. The mags are kinda crappy but there are videos on how to fix this issue. It is not a bad gun at all but to me it is a gun I would give to a neighbor or family member who didn’t have anything.
