Para 3 K390 vs Para 3 Rex 45 tool steel takedown. Did one dominate the other or is it a draw? Can the harder Rex 45 beat the softer K390? All this leading up to more soon in this video. Ageis made a small appearance as well.

I'm a little worried about my k390 dragonfly, only did 120ft fine edge. It was the second edge so I'm hoping that a 3rd sharpening will get down to some less fatigued steel. Great vid as always

You know I am pulling for Rex45. My K390 Para3 is horrible. It feels gummy when sharpening and the burr is very hard to eliminate. It tested at 62.5 HRC. Great test as always.

I'd guess this one isn't much harder but it feels fine sharpening and is easy to deburr. I did it freehand after the test and it was quick and easy to do.

I should get Rockwell numbers for my k390 delica this weekend. I heard another tester had 66 but I can't fully trust that until more seki k390 gets tested. I'm a big fan of rex45 and when I was testing it beside my k390 pm2 I felt they performed about the same as well.

I would like to see these 2 ran at 300 grit diamond. Then like a 1 micron diamond film. See the results that edge finish would have on these steels. There quite different.
@dombond6515
@dombond6515 3 жыл бұрын
@Semper Skeptical right but 1 strop only. 3 strops loaded with diamonds can really kill the aggression that comes up even from a 200 diamond stone. Ten passes per side is alot x3 is to much.
@ryanh6378
@ryanh6378 3 жыл бұрын
When sharpening some of the higher hardness steels on diamond, do you apply any more pressure if it feels like the stone is just "skating" across the surface? On harder steels, I would have assumed the more coarse grit of the 140 stone would cut it better, but it seemed like my 300 grit KME diamond stone was actually removing material faster.
@lindboknifeandtool
@lindboknifeandtool 3 жыл бұрын
Higher grit stones remove more material with normal pressure because there is much more surface area. Applying pressure to higher grit stones will make them cut faster.
@londiniumarmoury7037
@londiniumarmoury7037 3 жыл бұрын
You want to be careful using very low grit diamond stones on steels like K390 / Maxamet / S110V etc, they can chip the edge out. You will get best results with around 400-600 grit. Hope this helps.
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 3 жыл бұрын
I've found that the 300 grit stone works better than the lower grit plates. I use the same pressure, not much, for any steel I'm sharpening. Harder steels that are done well even with stone skate will sharpen nicely.

Thank you G! This is the class of steel I love to see tested. I'm looking forward to see how your Shaman does. For the record. When they ran the batch of blades for the TreeRex. They made more than they needed to fill that Knife Center order. They set them aside, until the burnt orange scales were ready. Then they built a few of those, until they ran out of blades. I have had here, burnt orange G10 Shamans, with date codes of: LS - December 2019 FT - June 2020 GT - July 2020 HT - August 2020 So these LS date coded boxes, have blades in them from the leftover/overrun of TreeRex knives. The date printed around the pivot also shows this to be a fact. So later on, when you are possibly comparing those two runs. You'll want to know, and keep track of the box date codes.

I feel the demand for both has become so high that spyderco has decided to put the hrc in a setting to run these with minimal indicant on the manufacturing end. Very interesting how these did only a hair better than my cruwear delica. It seems that Spyderco is creeping away from high performance processing like the way they used and putting more effort into the marketing aspect of their products
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 3 жыл бұрын
The difference in some older vs newer runs is pretty big. The same with batch to batch runs in the same steel different model. 4V Para 3 come in at 65 yet the 4V PM2 comes in at 62.5. It seems most of their steels have a wide range from run to run. Only the commonly used steels seem to be run pretty close together.

Yup. I have the K390 PM2 and the Burnt REX Shaman. The Shaman is definitely harder. I don't really mind at all though. I still love K390. Even at 64. Still no slouch. I think that they should have made all of the PM2 and Paras 67 though. It's really mostly steel nerds and sharpeners that want them and if you abuse hard steel enough to break it, you lose.

Unless I specify in the video every test is 15 dps at 1500 grit diamond plate finish. Then stropped on 6, 3 and 1 micron 5 passes per side. On some knives I do test the factory edge as well and the results will be in the video.
