Yep people love to address the symptom rather than the actual cause of the problem. The fact is that kids turn out exactly the way you raise them. It's your fault how they turn out. If you abuse them then they will become abusive. But if you love them without condition then they will reciprocate. Treat others the way YOU would like to be treated, especially your kids.

I really need help. My only son who is 17 yrs old says he wants to become a doctor; but he can’t stop gaming. He doesn’t prioritise studies over gaming. Even during exams, he wants to play and when I tell him to understand his priorities, he says I am being unreasonable and says he enjoys gaming and can’t be without it. He only plays on the weekends, but looks forward to gaming again. If I let him, he would play endlessly and not study at all. He doesn’t care about his results and doesn’t realise that by the time he understands that gaming is detrimental to his progress, he would have missed the bus. I m tired of arguing with him and have a child who doesn’t understand that I only mean good.

Hi Diya, I'd bet you feel pretty hopeless and alone trying to help your son with his gaming. You're battling with an industry that designs video games to trap your child, make your child dependent on their product (an addiction) and keep them from you. Horrifying. Parenting today has all the responsibilities it's every had PLUS now your home has to be a rehab center. It's too late to avoid it, so you have to choose what you're going to do. Your son might have to suffer more before he's willing to do to the hard work of detoxing from gaming. If YOU have hope that this can and will eventually get resolved, then you can also anticipate seeing the "value" in this life lesson. That could make it easier on you. Here are the resources we have to offer. Help yourself to anything that suits you. I made a Master Index reallove.com/master-index/ from all the books, blogs, etc. Refer to it a lot. Also devour RealLove.com www.reallove.com, and www.realloveparents.com, and see if there are any resources you think would help you. The majority of the video is rambling over the same 2 points and a lot of it is way too nonspecific, but I'm gonna be honest, this is a really nice change of pace from the usual "The kid is lazy and misbehaved, just take the games away and punish them until they listen".
@RealLoveCompany3 жыл бұрын
Punishment can get a child to move, but it won't teach them anything but to fear you. Instead, think of gaming like "pain relief", not unlike about a hundred other ways to relieve pain. Deal with the pain and the need to relieve it will vanish.

I have tried many times to bring my children back to their natural habitat. I even traveled to another country to cause the change and spend more time with the. Hi Jayita. Video game addiction is real, and awful. I recommend that his parents watch this video, which is also on www.RealLoveParents.com. Then, watch it a second time with their son. At the end of that video there's a way to watch a 1.5 hour lesson. They should watch that as a family, too. It's free, and it's complete, meaning it's not a trick to get you to buy something in order to get the answer. The lesson is complete, and CRITICAL for all ages. Does anyone have any advice on how to restrict gaming in a living way without it seeming like a punishment and techniques to help the child respond in a positive way to the restrictions??
@RealLoveCompany8 ай бұрын
Add Real Love®. Your job as a parent is NOT to make your child respond in a positive way. Your job is to LoveandTeach your children. If you're just "teaching" and not "loving", it will likely be harsh. You need to explain (once) why you're making the decision about their gaming, stick to it, and help replace the part you're eliminating with something that will add to their life. If you care about their happiness, you will teach them to be loved, loving and responsible. Those are the ingredients to happiness. Have you watched the first lesson of The Ridiculously Effective Parenting Training? It's a complete lesson, not a trick to purchase anything. It will teach you how to eliminate one behavior, a behavior that is the gateway to ALL harmful behaviors, no matter the age of the child. You'll find it at RealLoveParents.com.

I can't answer that. It depends on a lot of things; the game, your overall sense of responsibility, your attitude about other things... blah, blah. Just keep observing your involvement with your screen, and your involvement with real people.

What has happened with discipline? With tough love? With protecting your child from danger, bad habits, self destructive. Gaming to escape pain? Sorry. Impossible to agree. Sorry just impossible. I need to hear many testimonies from parents who have done this and succeeded. So far not one😢. I ll keep looking for those parents. 🤞🏿
@RealLoveCompany7 ай бұрын
Hi TessaJonker-fj2rn. Help me understand your question. I think we agree on more than you're imagining. What I'm saying is that excessive gaming is one of MANY habits/addictions that are dangerous to children (and adults, but a parent's responsibility is towards those under 18 years old). I'm asserting that gaming IS dangerous, a bad habit, and self-destructive. Furthermore, simply removing gaming will leave a void in the child's life or soul that needs to be filled, so removal alone won't effectively solve the issue. If you don't help fill that void with something healthy, they will. And it likely won't be exercising, studying and eating right. In my career of assisting parents, I mosty observe a lack of understanding regarding their responsibilities in raising children. Consequently, MANY parents overlook or ignore signs of potentially life-threatening behaviors. I'm dedicated to helping if I can.

How is gaming behaving badly?
@RealLoveCompany2 жыл бұрын
Good question, Hani. This is Donna. I'll be responding to your comment. "Gaming" is not behaving badly, until it gets in the way of living. Gaming has become addictive to many people. It's designed to be addictive. All addictions make happiness impossible. That's the short answer. I'm going to add a generic list of resources we offer (mostly free -- loads of choices for you). I hope you find things you like and are helpful to add to what you're learning to make your parenting effective and fun. This is what I recommend: Go to realloveparents.com and click on "Start Here". Then watch a video that describes something you want help with. It might be the same video you saw already, or pick any of the others. It will lead you to a free lesson from our parenting training. We call the free lesson "Chapter Zero". It's a complete 1.5 hour lesson, not a trick to get you to pay money to get the answer. If you do ONLY what you learn from that lesson you and your children will transform. What you'll be learning is the GATEWAY behavior that is at the core of every bad behavior for every person, young and old. Greg made a Master Index (free) reallove.com/master-index/ from all the books, blogs, etc. Refer to it a lot. Also devour RealLove.com www.reallove.com, (free) and RealLoveParenting.com www.realloveparents.com, (free) and see if there are any resources you think would help you. Sign up for our monthly newsletter reallove.com/newsletter-signup/ (free) if you haven't already. We have (free) conference calls reallove.com/conference-calls/ five times a week, hosted by Certified Real Love Coaches. These are by telephone, not a video call. We don’t keep records of who called and then bombard you with emails, or anything shady like that. The call dial-in number and the schedule are in that link. (I set an alarm on my phone for all five calls. That way I can choose to join the call if I want. I never miss the alert, and I only have to set it up once using the 'repeat' function. It's very easy to turn off an alarm and I never miss a conference call alert.) You can hire a coach by going to RealLoveCoaching.com. If you want to learn more about coaching with Greg, write to him at greg@reallove.com. We also have two Facebook Pages you might like: The Real Love Company facebook.com/groups/reallovecompany Ridiculously Effective Parenting facebook.com/RidiculouslyEffectiveParenting You might like one of our ‘private' groups where people can practice Real Love principles. The benefit of being in one of the groups is that you can post a request to join an in-person group in your area (or find out if there is one), or join a Skype group (there are several of those), or use the private groups to get/give support. Hi NYC. This is Donna Baer -- Greg's wife. We wish we could give it away for free. Really. We can give these things away for free, however, and it's a lot. The most valuable thing we give away for free is "Chapter Zero" of the Parenting Training (what you're lead to after watching the video you watched, or available on RealLoveParents.com). It's a complete lesson without a trick to get you to buy something to get the answer. It teaches about the gateway behavior that leads to all other unproductive (bad) behaviors. If you really learn how to manage that one lesson, you will forever change your children, and yourself. It's as effective for adults as it is for children. Parents, though, have a responsibility to teach their children, so it's directed to parents. Here are some other things we give away for free... You can’t teach parent to love their child. You can maybe modify their behavior in the child’s presence… possibly resulting in a more compliant child… this is Pavlov. This is manipulation and the parent grows only to a more condition based love. Christ is the only One who can do what you’re peddling.
@RealLoveCompany3 жыл бұрын
I think I understand what you're saying. When I work with parents, I DO teach them how to unconditionally love them children "better" and "more consistently". It's imperative that the parents first get loved themselves, healing the wounds that keep them feeling fear and pain. When fear and pain are gone, love fills in the space. Then it's easy to love and teach anyone, including children. The next step is learning WHAT to teach them, and I do that, too. @@parisjej Good for you for seeing the truth about this situation. You're being bullied. Of course you're tired. You're right. I just want someone to tell you that. You're right about this. Being tired is not a good enough reason to stop being a good mom, though. You just need more support. Do you have support? Can you get support, meaning, develop support with friends and family who will help you stay strong while you LoveandTeach your son? You can use all the (mostly free) resources we have. I don't see how you are going to do this alone and be happy at the same time. You're at the tipping point right now. What are you going to do? Save your son? Or let the games consume your son? If there's a case for becoming an app developer, research that with your son and his father. What's that job like? I think you will be shocked at the reality of that career choice. As opposed to say, code writing, or program development, or website development, or internet marketing, or cyber security. Those career choices require more than playing games to be employable, and the people (generally) are happier with their career choice for lots of reasons. What your son's father is describing it the dream that so many father's have of their child becoming a famous athlete -- a one-in-a-million chance. Like winning a lottery as a career choice. If you son loves computers/electronics, have him study them, not just play them. Compare that to a person who loves to eat food, to the person who learns the science behind preparing food. Anyway, I'm blabbing. Here is a list of most of the resources we offer (invite your son's father to join you with this, or have him read what is written above.
