As a trans woman who is "passable" it breaks my heart that trans women feel the need to pass in order to live regular daily lives, it also gives me an insight into the mind of transphobes, they say they can always tell, but believe me they can not, I just want to live in a world where people dont think they have the power to end someones life just because they disagree with how its being lived.

As a student of cultural anthropology, I'm also sceptical of the current focus especially in Western cultures on physical conformity / surgeries or very invasive procedures. Of course it is up to individuals to decide what is right for them. But considering how many cultures there are or were, where many people we would label trans today were valued members of their society and could live good lives, without the expectation of physically conforming to a certain "standard", definitely makes me question why we consider it so central today. In the recent words of Juriji der Klee (approximated), in the queer world of today, it is time to be accepting of trans people regardless of what changes they have or haven't made to their bodies. People should go with their heart on these decisions, not because they feel the pressure to "pass" in order to feel or be treated as "legitimate".

@@Avatar_Brandy That's definitely true for a lot of people, but I do think plenty of other people feel pressure from a society that expects everyone to fit into a neat binary box and that that is something they may take into account when considering their options. Also we need to keep in mind that gender dysphoria has different incidences and may express itself differently between cultures. I'm not saying it's about "accepting yourself", that puts the onus on the individual, it's about getting recognition of who you are from general society, which is a perfectly understandable need. There are and were other, non-Western cultures where other genders than male and female were completely normalized or even had special status within society. I don't think it's too far-fetched to assume people might suffer from less dysphoria if they are just outright accepted or maybe never even had to "come out" at all, but were allowed to grow up as themselves.
