What happened to the kids from Paris is Burning?
Paris is Burning is a 1990 documentary directed by Jennie Livingston. The film chronicles the lives of iconic members of the New York Ballroom Scene. Featured cast members include Octavia St Laurent, Willi Ninja, Angie Xtravaganza, Kim Pendavis, Dorian Corey, Venus Xtravaganza, Pepper LaBeija and many more.
The film showed what it was like to live in New York as a black/ latinx LGBTQ+ person in the late 80’s. It helped to bring Voguing, a performance style pioneered by Paris Dupree, to the mainstream, and inspired the hit TV Show ‘Pose’. However many members of the ballroom community, feel that the documentary did more harm than good. The cast members felt they were taken advantage of, tricked into filming, and were not fairly reimbursed for their contributions to the film.
Vogue has inspired many pioneers in the entertainment industry today such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Madonna and many more!
