Terah and the idols is from the Apocalypse of Abraham written some time after the destruction of Jerusalem and mid second century. It seems the old testament source material for the Quran is first to second century Judaism and Christianity and later Syriac texts.

An Oral-Formulaic Study of the Quran by Andrew Bannister is a book worth reading, he proves not only that the Quran was recited and transmitted orally but that it was actually composed orally in live performance with formulate diction, i.e. short repeated phrases or groups of words that can be reused to express a key idea, this shows that Muhammad was an oral performer or preacher fishing from a pool of oral material in his culture which can be traced back to Uninspired Jewish, Christian and Gnostic texts. Interesting, in chapter 2 of my book, I also mention formulaic diction employed by Muhammad but in connection to the vast Hadith literature, the Quran seemed more taken from other scriptures, prayer books, Gnostic texts and other aspects. I'll look into this, thanks for your thoughts.
