hey Texas know how.. I've followed all the videos on this truck, I am doing my 72 F100 right along with you. I purchased a 2000 explorer rear end with disc brakes and 3:55 gear ratio from my local auto recyclers, the only problem I have now is what size rims and offset I need. I was hoping to run police interceptor wheels but the offset wont allow it. what size rim/tire and offset are you using for the rear.. Thanks from Jim in Canada

Jim Geelen - Hey Jim, thanks for following along. For now I purchased 2” adaptors (I’ll discuss in a soon to come episode). They are good ones and will allow normal offset wheels to mount up and clear. Long term I’m purchasing shallow back spaced wheels to keep them outward. I’ll post up the details in my comments section on the next vid. C
@jimgeelen2354
@jimgeelen2354 6 жыл бұрын
i would really rather not run spacers, here in Canada you cannot certify a vehicle with wheel spacers. So i may look into putting the original rear end back in and purchase an axle flip kit, i've seen them on here, you get the same stance but obviously lose disc brake, wheel bolt pattern, posi, etc.. Custom rims are expensive. Thanks Clay take care!

I'm doing the same thing to my '69 ( well, what I'm able to,do.i am disabled because of my back) but being able to show people your ideas on making the jig for drilling the rear spring mounts etc... has made this MUCH easier than trying to explain it. @Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t modified a C10 but pretty sure your 1980 still uses Coil springs on the rear. I’ve own two C10s in the past. With that setup, you need to clamp the big trailing arms to the rearend housing at the same distance as they were on the original axle housing. I.e. find a place to measure from that is identical no matter which side you are on.

what would the difference be if you put the 8.8 under the leaf springs instead of on top of them would the angle be correct
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 жыл бұрын
It would change the angle but only slightly. Also it would lift the rearend up quite a bit and I wan the low look. They make shims that go under each leaf spring pack that correct the angle; I plan to use them if needed. Clay

There is no way a Northern Truck would come apart like that. We got to use a cutting torch on a five-year-old truck. You literally tapped the bolts out from the front spring mounts. The little round bushing inside the rubber bushing would literally seize to the bolt. You guys got it good down there in those dry States

The Ford 9" is arguably the greatest rearend ever made. I really don't know why you would swap in an inferior rearend in your project. The stock 9" is MUCH stronger than the Explorer model and you can get parts to make it handle just about any horsepower. You can have the axles drilled to whatever bolt pattern you want and aftermarket disk brake kits and gear ratios are available and easy to find. There is a reason every NASCAR race car is equipped with one.

wouldnt the driveshaft bind up do to the offset of the engine?
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 5 жыл бұрын
Ford 67f100 - Technically it can offset to the side or up and down. A spinning driveshaft doesn’t really know left, right or up or down. However, the pinion angle of the rearend needs to match that of the transmission output shaft AND the pinion and transmission need to be relatively parallel. I.e. an imaginary line out of the pinion and another line out of the trans output should be parallel. Folks use this rearend all the time not centered. This is a great question.

@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 7 жыл бұрын
Joe Marshall - that's a good question. And I've answered it a few times on different videos of this series. In short all the benefits of a 33 year newer rearend. Limited slip, disc brakes, sway bar, leaf spring perches already set up for SUA, has the right bolt pattern to match CV front. The last one is what got me thinking about it in the first place. Also it's more narrow so I can run deep dish wheels. Cost $100 plus a few gaskets, seals and fresh full synthetic oil. Not a bad package.

How long ago did you do this work? I would have 4 linked it. I'm in the process of installing a Jaguar xjs independent front and rear suspension in my F100. I'm pretty much done with the front. I'm not looking forward to the rear end. The Jaguar setup is narrower than the Crown Victoria suspension is. You can put on rims with more offset to them. @@Texasknowhow oh God. There is a whole list. I used the 1995 XJS. It has the best rack. If you Google it. They do have a complete list for them. I went with the newer year because I wanted the outboard rear brakes. The inboard look cooler. But I'm old. I don't want to have to pull everything apart to change rear brake disk. The other good part is. It's an old school Chevrolet bolt pattern. There are a lot more wheel selection for Chevrolet than Ford. I've already purchased my wheels. 20x10 rear 18x10 front. I might switch & go to 20x10 in the front 22x10 rear. I notched my front frame 1-1/2 inches to make it sit even lower. Aired out it will sit about 2 inches off the ground. I also welded mine in. The crown Vic is a very easy install. The Jaguar is a bit more work. But it is much narrower from outside of disc to disc. You're not stuck on your wheel choices.

Thinking of doing this with the cop car as its just been sitting for years. Why not use the entire Crown Vic drive train??? Or what about using the Explorer drive train and doing 4WD??? James Harrison - What year P71? Rear ends are different widths depending on the year. Ie 02 and back have a reared that is a good width for our trucks. 03 -11 the tear ends are really wide. They work, but you are limited on your wheel width options. This is why folks choose the Explorer rears. They are narrower. All these options mentioned get you a matching wheel lug pattern (5-4.5) which matches the Vic front k-member swap. A full frame swap, which is an option, as well will also work with the Vic doner. Tons of info on this. River City on KZbin has done this for example.

Yeah, my two cents, do it right. Cut the perches and re weld in the right place.

Ervin Goertzen - Is that how you did your’s? Mine turned out great the way I did them. Cutting the perches off pretty much messes them up so they can’t be used. I didn’t have a plasma torch which may have been able to save them. They were close to the right width, moving the hole worked well.

@@Texasknowhow l drilled pilot hole, then smaller punch, for expansion, and then FBH, to punch three rivets, then hinge perch, on remaining, lower rivet. I loosened the nut, then cut bolt head off, stacked washers, as l drew the bolt out, with impact wrench, and, yes, ATF,and Acetone.

Oh,do you know if a '70 grill will fit my '69 ? Rock on !!!

Darren Bridges - All the grills from 67 to 72 should pretty easily interchange. I've seen all these trucks with mixed up grills. This should be an easy swap out.

why not just change the axles in the 9 inch to a car bolt pattern axle
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 жыл бұрын
Mcdonal Bennett - You could do that if you had those car axles (I didn't), this cost already pulled was $100. I get disc brakes limited slip diff and a sway bar all for that $100. Good deal man. Upgrading the 9" to limited slip , disc brakes and adding an after market or junk yard sway bar would add up big time. Or take me months of finding all those different parts in wrecking yards. You can't buy a limited slip up grade for a 9" for $100 bucks. Make sense??

wanna sell that rear 9 inch?
@Texasknowhow
@Texasknowhow 8 жыл бұрын
I may consider selling it. What I had in mind was to rebuild it and add disc brakes and posi-trac to it for the next truck project. Where are you located? Send me a private msg. Shipping may be expensive.
