This episode rolls straight off the back of the first episode released 2 weeks ago. So what has changed?
I go over a bit more detail of the conversion, talk about some observations (good impartial and bad) and then do some travelling to get some stats up.
I had thought the 79 would be thirstier around town (not yet done those figures) but I was a little surprised with the highway fuel figures. I had thought lower RPM would provide some benefit. But, overall, no that was not the case.
I'm using about 1/2 litre more fuel per 100 kms. Still very decent numbers at 12.95 litres per 100 kilometres over 1,667.6 kms average.
With the manual I use to use about 5-6 litres more per 100 kms towing the Matrix, about 17.04 litres per 100 kilometres, than when not towing. Tomorrow I head up the coast, albeit only a very short drive of some 130 odd kilometres.
Those who know the track, the inside road between Bundaberg and Agnes Water, will know it is a varied track of undulations, winding road and some open stretches. This will be a good little run (there and back) to check some basic fuel figures towing with the Auto and also to sus out the transmission temperatures.
I'm more interested in how the AB60 performs over this short track than the fuel consumption. I'd be content with fuel of less than 20 litres per 100 kms and temperatures less than 105. I just can't see the temperatures staying reasonable though.
Yeh, I rag out a bit about Wholesale at the end. I think it is reasonable to have a little rant when the delivery timeframe was 3 months then became 6 months with little to no communication. Moreso because if you check out their FB page leading upto Christmas they were pumping conversions out. Made me feel like the poor old county fella not using them that could be pushed back ......
Anyhow, I've had my rant and that's where it'll end. I can say the “product" supplied, to date, is pretty good.

0:01 Fully invested in this significant modification now. I’m not a full blown convert, I mean it hasn’t seen towing nor dirty work yet so that vote remains on hold. But, for simple highway driving it sure makes it an easy drive, and I reckon a bit quieter too. For a 79 any reduction in noise is a benefit. What do you think?

Why a new transfer case. Mine is booked in at Recurve North lakes for the 1st of April. Fingers crossed hey. Thanks for your insight into what I’m hoping is a worthy investment. 👍🍻

Best of luck. I’m dropping a short 3rd instalment after having just completed a short tow with our van. It’ll be about fuel consumption, a bit of video watching the shifts and stuff like that. New Transfer Case! The old girl had 307000 kms on it and i’ve given it a hammering over the years. When the 79 was under heavy load I was getting a bearing noise from the transfer case. It’d only happen in 1st and sometimes 2nd. I put a new rear diff centre and locker in about 15 months ago after destroying it. I put a new rear axle housing (DWIZ) with chrome moly axles in August 22. It’s got pretty new uni joints. In short, the transfer case I saw as a weak point in my drive line. I didn’t want to Bgr around so I decided to replace it. Long winded answer 😂 kennym

Great video I’m currently booked in for the conversion for 1st of July here at wholesale automatics in Melbourne,, so are you overall happy with the conversion and the drive ability of the rig? Some video footage going through the gears would be good to see also. Thanks for the video 👍

In the description to the video I mention my initial thoughts and I think I pinned a comment as well. I’ve not towed (am doing that today) nor have I been off road to assess how it performs. But, the highway driving I did last week it was pretty good. It’s a little clunky, as I mention, when cold. But it’s not terribly clunky. It’s a bit hard to video the “feeling” of the shifts. But I’ll do a bit 👍 I’ve noticed when in auto (not sports mode nor with lock up engaged by the switch) it seems to only use lock up in 5th and 6th. I’m guessing that is for drive ability. It’d likely be more clunky if it locked up through most the gears. Thanks for the comment. kennym

With the Allison in the Chevy, locking up the converter is achieved by selecting "TOW/HAUL" mode. It stays locked in all gears except 1st, but won't allow lock up to occur at all if the box hasn't reached a predetermined temperature. Not sure what that temperature is, but suspect its about 50°c. Also, "TOW/HAUL" alters the revs at which each change occurs. For example, in non TOW/HAUL mode I get into 6th at about 90kph, but in T/H mode it's about 115kph. As such, with the caravan on, I rarely get into 6th.....not unless I exceed speed limit whilst overtaking. Once back down to 100kph, it'll hold 6th until speed drops to about 95kph. I'm sure you'll love it all the time with the possible exception of steep downhill 1st gear crawling.
