Thanks for the videos. One thing that I often see glossed over is the creation of the large foliage (ie: trees). There aren't fully assembled tree assets in the Megascans Library. Were the trees made up of the trunks and branches available and combined together? Or were those trees created in a program like SpeedTree?
@Ruleoverdarknes3 жыл бұрын
The trees are from the Temperate Vegetation: Spruce Forest asset pack in the Unreal Engine marketplace.

I was a little po'd that the 'tutorials' were so glossed over. But... that was before I downloaded the scene from UE Marketplace! Watch this series again with the scene open! There's soooo much there, and it has helpful creator tags ALL THE WAY THROUGH!! If you are not too beginner, but are HUNGRY for proper flows, download it, open it, play with it, IT'S ALL GOOD!!!!....

Hello Jakob! =D Great awesome stuff from you people at Quixel as alweys. I have a question (+some sub questions xD): How did you guys aproach making the trees? Did you use like the bottom stumps from your library and combine them with tiling materials and atlases by hand in a modelling software? Or did you use a standalone foliage creator tool like Speedtree or something more procedural like with Houdini to more automate and streamline the process?
@NathanRech3 жыл бұрын

Simply Superb work (and workflow) as always! One question regarding the Trees (I'm downloading your project but can't wait to study it's details ;) )So... I know, such "Geo" is super hard to scan, almost impossible... are you using Speedtree in this case? Or maybe something like MaxTree collection and simply processing it with your maps and implementing the movement afterwards? Thx and looking forward to the next projects

ehm ok, never mind, found the answer in the comments :D anyways, super super work!

I love the procedural foliage but for some reason only some of my instances are actually casting shadows, even with the setting turned on. Like one cactus has a shadow, and the one next to it doesnt... from the same foliage asset

I am curious how you make your foliage look so dense, even at a distance. A while ago I played around with UE4, trying to achieve a similar look and I kept having the problem that the engine "culls" distant vegetation that are below a certain threshold of size or something. I tried a lot of different settings and nothing solved this problem completely.
@staviq3 жыл бұрын
Easy. It's a render. They are showing fake renders for the most part. If you actually download the demo and try to run it yourself, it looks meh even if you crank up the settings to cinematic.
@CGDive3 жыл бұрын
@@staviq Do you mean a render from UE4 or offline render from maya/max?
@staviq3 жыл бұрын
@@CGDive Probably UE4 render, but i get the feeling they used 8k textures for the render, and then downsampled everything a lot for the live demo to make it playable at all. In the live demo, if you look at the growing crops rigth after the start of the map, it is so blurry and has so much dithering you can barely make out what it is.
@CGDive3 жыл бұрын
@@staviq Interesting. But if you can even get this quality using semi-offline rendering it still has use cases. Even if it's not a game or a true real-time app

4:29 I would love to, but I only have an Intel Core i7-7700k, a GTX 1070 and 16 GB of RAM. So my PC is way too bad for 8k textures. It would be perfect if you could release the project again in 2k textures :)
@admirhalilovic79653 жыл бұрын
I got an 1800x, gtx 1060 and 16GB ram and I am runing the project just fine after some tweaking. Just hide the volumetric clouds and tweak some foliage density and draw distances. As for textures they imported 4k-8k but the max ingame is lower than that so it runs fine on 8GB gpu. You can tweak the texture res. youself, just open a texture and go to settings and set the max ingame res you want.

@@stefanrichter7415 When opening the project 1st time the engine needs to compile all shaders so it takes a long time (1-2h) it gets stuck at 45%, 55%, 95% you just need to wait it out.

Hey guys maybe somebody of you can help me? I tried to understand why when I paint with the foliage tool the performance on my pc really went down so when I tested the foliage tool with RenderDoc and the GPU visualizer I saw that when I painted a static mesh with the foliage tool it took a double amount of time to render the object than just placing the object without the foliage tool (same object same size same position of the camera) so anyone here knows if it’s just the downside of the foliage tool or it might be fixed?
