Sid, the walk through of the abandoned building was enough, it's beautiful in its decay. You have a family to support so no, you don't need to do free work unless its within 10 minutes drive and takes less than an hour.

Keep your chin up Sid. Sounds like common small business owner bumps in the road. Not something you’re doing wrong. Here in Canada fire fighters often take on extra work since they have several days off between shifts. I wonder if you could train a few part-timer employees who are used to working hard and have to be strong. Good luck! Farm looks amazing … maybe Ben from Flawless and his lovely dad could help?

The abandoned building looks to me like a livery yard, annexed to a large Manor house, the spire on top sometimes has a clock but mainly they were for ventilation for the stables, watch out for the well! There is probably one either in the yard or under one of the tack rooms and they can be deep!

Often it's a case that the original owner died (of old age) meaning even in the later years the care would have been lower. If it is remote enough and do to the size expensive to redo. people will just not do anything. And in that case it can go pretty fast.

I do media as my day job and for a landscaping company I recently printed before and after postcards. One saying “we are working in the area, sorry for any inconvenience” with contact details if they need to speak to someone. And then one saying “thank you for your patience whilst we were working” It’s a great way to advertise your business without directly pushing for work and also shows you in a good light to potential clients. The design had some nice images of their work and all their contact details, website etc. Would work well for pressure washing with before and after photos.

I am appreciating that you are discussing "non standard" conditions, as dealing with freezing, you can't take time for lunch, the equipment being affected, platform getting slippery, gutters and tiles can get ice coated... a bit up from learning basics. It still amazes me how good a roof can look after being cleaned/renewed. I have a question. Periodically I note chimneys. It seems to me that chimneys would age and get grimey right along with roofs but they don't always seem to get worked on, could be wrong. What is your view of them? That difficult moss roof was interesting. You were right, got sight of the green stones of the house on the hill (above the fog) and was looking forward to seeing what the house looked like. :) Can understand they want safety and a historical look over a full clean. Glad you are up on variables as low pressures, steam, etc. as far as choices and viability. It is fun to see the architectural details coming back, as the patios. A grime line exists at 24:02. Wishing you some good staff. Observed it takes physical strength, an enjoyment of the outdoors and problem solving, and an interest in the topic and artwork as well. Ollie was a treasure, sure like the upgrade of the property. Your videoing is fine. A priority is being able to do the work and keeping your sanity. On the very intriguing old farm, can you acquire some other help? Would Ben and Paul of Flawless or others come and help with the gardening aspect of the cleanup?

Regarding your retention problem, I have a few key points you can check, that I accumulated through my time at different employers: *Cadence*: In the videos it looks like you're constantly working. Like, day after day, the whole day through until the job's done. I'm sure you cut out the breaks and such, but if one side of a roof takes 3h you seem to work the whole 3h without more than some 1 minute breaks. As a superior you're the role model. I'm a firm believer that adults are still children only with more experience and a credit card. So the "do as I say, not as I do" doesn't really work in practice. And if your employees are like-minded people, you might need to force them to take a break and stand by so they don't start working again and see, that you're also taking a break. A lazy boss is sometimes better, than a too hard working one, like in "he's just lazing around. we're doing the REAL work here". *Scheduling*: It seems to be a physically demanding job. Maybe you need a much bigger crew with a wider rotation for the amount of jobs you want to tackle. If you're basically a power washing demi-god, but everyone else is just mortal, they need more days off. Like instead having 2 employees, who work every day, you'd need 4 + 1 part timer. So everybody works at most every other day and a part timer for when someone gets sick. *Health & Safety*: I mostly worked office jobs so far, but even then there are stress factors, that are not immediately obvious. Since everyone is different and some might not have the same physical self-awareness, the sounds (loudness and pitch) of the pressure washer or the flashing lights of the water hitting the floor might be inconvenient at first, but with prolonged exposure could be a source of stress, that's hard to identify. I'm pulling all of this out of my hat, since I haven't worked with pressure washers so far, but I think you get the point. There's probably not much info in governmental offices on your profession particularly, but asking is usually free and some "real talk" with experienced people in the same business should show some result. *Character*: This is a spicy one, so please don't take this personal. It's just my experience. Sometimes it is better to be a professional boss, at least at work, than to be a friend. If one has problems with a partner, you go to a friend, but I find it easier to open up to a random bloke, who gets paid to be my supervisor, when it comes to work related issues. It's a business to business relationship. With friends there's shame involved, since the friend is friend, superior and business owner at the same time. As a thoughtfull and caring individual, that's hard to balance. We got a saying in Germany: "Work is work. Liquor is liquor." And one more thing, that I don't think apllies to you, but I judge a superior by their worst, not their best. If I f*ck it up royally and will get an emotional (blaming, shouting etc) talk with the boss, I'm much less likely to report mistakes and feel constantly on edge not to make mistakes. I'd rather hear a "I'm sorry, but I have to fire you", than a 2h rant about the problems I caused my superior. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. I hope you enjoyed your time and have good rest of your day. Bye

Weather picking up a bit now so not a problem but maybe for next winter…?

Sid please darlin we understand what you are dealing with so no sorry needed. You are a dedicated and hard worker. I noticed you are looking quite gaunt, so you are letting your stress get to you. Please take care of yourself and don't beat yourself up. We will always be here and support you.

As much as I like the aesthetic of the old farm. I would love you to clean it and give it a new life. My guess is that when it’s clean, the owner(s) would rather fix it than when it’s in the state as it is in now.

What a run of bad luck, mate 😞. But that job isn't for the faint hearted. You have to have boundless energy and love it - everything you are.

That was my first thought when I saw the overgrowth on the building. He certainly has the equipment to tackle that part, and he is into "crazy" projects, too, I assume.

That abandoned farm is beautiful. Great advertisement value showing before and after. Quitting in the middle of a job is a crap thing to do especially after your shout out.

I'd like to see you give that abandoned place your full treatment. Once done, perhaps the restorers will see the value in keeping it's character as it is.

Loved this video, Sid. Intrigued by the old farmhouse; I hope you can bid on cleaning it up so I can move in.😉 Could keep my horses and dogs right outside my bedroom, which would be lovely. Also, the music you were using is very complimentary to the work. And I love the old English properties you service. So charming and elegant! I pray you find a loyal, hard-working employee who will stay for a LONG time. Blessings to your family; hope you are enjoying your new son. God is good! Crack on, sir.
