Well, I did it, all by my female self lol. My husband purchased the gear case(transmission) and wash plate and I did the repairs. Go me lol!! Thanks so much for your thorough tutorial. 😊 You sure saved us a lot of money for a repairman!

Please please help me do mine! Walk me through it on video chat, anything live that I mean, I'm so desperate to fix mine. It needs the gearcase replaced. I know I can do it & can get together all the tools I'll need. But my washer is a few years newer than the one in this video & I've been afraid to just start messing with it because of that. But it can't be much different. I can afford a new gearcase. Not a new $899 washer. Because that's I paid for it and that's what it still costs.

@@user-ns8jj4mm2c My washer is a newer model as well but I promise you, if you follow that gentleman’s instructions, step by step as I did, you’ll be able to do it. I disassembled everything, made a note of EXACTLY where they go(screws are important) and sat them aside separately. My transmission shaft was stuck, but I sprayed lubricant and let it sit for a day. It was worth the while. I wish you much success 🤞🏽keep me posted.

Thanks a bunch! I was able to get the washer going again which made the wife happy. Cheaper than calling someone or buying new, which made me happy. I went ahead and replaced the splutch and belt while I was there. I ended up cutting down a pipe wrench as I live in the country and didn't even think about a spanner nut wrench being involved. I replaced the shocks as well too.

I see many do it yourself videos that skip over some of the most important things. Please don't ever delete this video. I'm sure I'll need it again as this is the second gearcase replaced on my washer.

Thank you for the very clear video. I used a simpler way to get the old transmission to release from the basket without removing the top rim or the basket.. With the bottom mounting bolts of the transmission loose and backed out an inch, open the top door, remove the agitator cap, loosen the top agitator bolt unscrewing it about 1/2 to 3/4 inch so that it still has plenty of threads engaged. Then sharply strike straight down on the head of the top agitator bolt (I used my soft blow hammer, head straight down). Then that bold moves down, this means the old transmission is knocked out of the splines. Viola!

DUUUUUDE, I JUST came here to find if anyone had been able to replace the transmission without going through the whole top removal process...it didn't really seem necessary, and the video doesn't make that clear about WHY he's doing that. I'm going to try your trick first!

This is not the type of project I enjoy doing, but with this video was able to get it done with a minimum of cursing. EXCELLENT video. Only two issues, one with the video (neglected to mention the spring when reinstalling the splutch assembly - figured it out though), and one with my washer (the retaining bolt holding the inner basket took me about 30 minutes to get off - almost couldn't). But my utmost thanks to Steve for posting this video. I'd leave you a tip, if I could!

To remove the agitator just push a shoe string around it, so it goes under the agitator, while each end of the shoelace stays on top. Grab the shoe lace on both sides of the agitator and pull up. Easy peasy.

Does the gear case need to be removed if you are replacing bearings ? I can’t get the drum free even after removing the washer basket drive hub. There looks like there is another nut on the axle spindle looking thing. I used a scissor jack and a wood piece and the tub does not release. Tried penetration oil too.

@partselect

Typically they all mount flush to the tub, the seal around the shaft where it goes into the tub may not be sitting properly. You can lubricate the seal with a thin film of vaseline or dishwasher soap so it slides in easier

Look at all those plastic parts just ready to fail in a short amount of time. Just like my 3yr 10mo old Maytag (Whirlpool) MVWB765FW that the Lowes EPP repair guy said with the transmission going south on because of cheaply made parts. This thing squeals like a stuck pig on wash cycle while the "agitator" is making its half turn....but it's fine on spin. Now to figure out what new piece of crap washer to buy after they send me a Lowes card for another one. Jeez

Seriously. I'm here now cause the gear for the wash plate is STUCK. I've let the thing soak in p oil for a week and still won't budge. Thought maybe I can pull the gear box out and bang it off... NOPE. The gear for the wash plate won't fit through the cutout in the basket. 5 year old washer completely locked up like bolt on a 20 year old car in the Midwest. My next attempt will involve a torch, if that doesn't work I'm onto cutting the gear on both sides with a hack saw. I'm trying to avoid cutting the drive shaft so I don't have to replace the transmission. I've taken hundreds of different appliances apart and work with cooking and dish appliances in a laboratory. I've come to the conclusion that design was made without service in mind. Probably saved them 5 cents a unit lmao.
