Get the tools to true your motorcycle wheel here: bit.ly/How-to-true-a-motorcycl...
See how to true a motorcycle wheel in this video from Partzilla.com.
We laced this motorcycle wheel in a previous video, so if you want to see how to do it, check it out here: • How to Lace a Motorcyc...
Truing a wheel involves making sure the wheel is “true” in two ways. First, you’re looking at the hop: how much does the wheel seem to move up and down when you’re looking at it from behind.
Second, you’re looking side to side: how much does the wheel wobble left to right when you’re looking at it from behind.
The truing stand gives you a way to see precisely how much the wheel is moving in these two ways when fixed in the mount and then watching the wheel’s movement as you turn it relative to a point in space. Then, it’s just a matter of patiently adjusting the spokes to get the wheel straightened out.
In this video, John will first address the “hop,” or the roundness of the wheel. Is it really circular or does it have bulges in it? Then, we’ll address the wobble side to side. Does the side of the wheel seem to move left or right as it spins in the stand?
This is a dirt bike wheel, so the tolerances are a little bit more loose than they’d be on a street bike, but we’ll take you through the process just the same.

Thanks. Very informative, straight to the point and not over explained. Appreciate the post. I'm the kid that when parents tried to tie my shoes I'd bitch and pitch a fit hollering " I want to do it" I'm 55 years old now my friend and the only thing that's changed is I just holler it in a deeper voice! Thanks again!

I love John’s videos, however, I wish pops could give us his insight on what tools/methods he might use as opposed to the expensive specialty tools always listed. If any of y’all are like me, learning from KZbin, scraping by on nickels & dimes, hard work all whilst twisting them grips daily! We appreciate you all the same. Just something to consider throwing in for us common men/women (;

So you don't need all these fancy tools. I used two jack stands with the rod going through the rims bearings to hold up and spin the rim, then I used a hex key wrench thing that I put some magnets on and attached to the side of the jack stand for measuring how far off the rim was. For the wrenches, I was able to get by with a set of small channel lock pliers, but you may need to get those in case your rims need to be tightened into place (if they are bent a lot). Obviously, more expensive tools will usually be better but in this case, I got by just fine using what I had lying around :).

I can't understand how you can use a torque wrench in this application, you adjust the trueing of the rim by tightening or loosening the spokes to get it right but then you go and tighten them all down to the same torque again, I would rather just tighten each one the same amount after truing it and check them for sound.

Wanna know if this is same process for wire wheels on a vehicle is there any tools recommended or ways to get this done
@oldgamer1330
@oldgamer1330 5 ай бұрын
No on a vehicle you just tighten every spoke until it strips then back it off half a turn.

Hi John, if I just take A spoke torque wrench and tighten all the spokes to the same wouldn’t that true the wheel as well?? Thank you

No. If I gather this right, and I might be wrong, you'd certainly have to perform the hop and wobble first to tension all the spokes intially and uniformly. Then torque them all uniformly. I feel if you just started torquing you'd first tention one side of the wheel first and bringing the other side of the wheel to close to your center. Kinda ovaling the wheel. Kinda like doing head bolts on an automobile. There is a skip and jump pattern and usually a two or three step sequence to make sure the head stays square to the block. This guy that demonstrated this video and the whoever laced up that wheel have been doing that for awhile. The instructions are spot on but from experience this a very practiced thing. I was amazed that the initial lace was even that close. It's nice to watch people that know what their doing. You'll certainly understand when you do this your first time..... and again and again and again. Same wheel.

No, and that is why I think using a spoke torque wrench would be useless as well.

Can a motorcycle wheel be trued on the bike. Too muck labor to remove it and my tires are good for a few years yet ?

Yes it can be. I've done it for years. Just use a dial gauge and stand for truing.

Yes absolutely. If youre doing rear wheel, get the front and rear chain sprockets as in-line with each other as possible (rear wheel straight and chain straight). Use a ziptie zipped, clamped or taped to the swingarm or fork as an indicator. The truing stand DOES make reaching the spokes easier. Stay gold.

Try and remember that was a dirt bike wheel. It was bent into a circle then welded with very little machining done afterwards. The hop was acceptable for the wheel and the application. Dirt bike. Your high performance motorcycles come with a much better quality wheel and therefore get alot more trueing just by the nature of the way the wheel was built and machined. Of course that wouldn't have passed on a 150 mph bike but it was a heavy dirt bike wheel he was working on and it was an overview on truing spoke wheels. Your cruisers or baggers would have a better machined wheel that by it's nature wouldn't have that hop in it. Performance bikes haven't had spokes on them since the 80s anyway. For good reason. Anyway, kinda hard on ole fella. As always..... keep on keeping on brother.
