People think if they don't mark on the card that they have food, seeds, plant or wood items that they will walk right through customs! Quarantine officials are not going to just take someones word for it, sniffer dogs, xrays and their experience will find out even hidden items that could cause problems. If these people were honest they would at least avoid the fines.

I don't smoke tobacco but $500 for importing the cigars is excessive when people lie about not having food that can have a disastrous effect on agriculture. Those fines should be much higher.

They paid $500AUD fine for a box of Cuban cigars. The value of those vary widely. Most likely they determined they were valuable; otherwise they could have just had cheap ones shipped to them.

They are Australian citizens who travel frequently. If they were foreign travellers arriving in Australia for the first time, unaware of our laws, they may have gotten a warning. “Why didn’t anybody tell us?” 🤦‍♂️ They did. It’s written on the cards you signed. “Any wooden items?” “No”. “Are you carrying more than x amount of tobacco?” “No”. You lied. You pay the fine and duty

@@ryp6627 yes it was intentional. They are Australian citizens. They know our own laws. They read the cards which clearly ask “are you bringing in more than x amount of tobacco”.
