What most civilians don't understand is that GPS can be spoofed (false signals or interference caused by a land based transmitter). Military grade GPS equipment can't be spoofed but if you don't have access to that gear, map and compass is your only other option.

Great breakdown, but Polaris (North Star) is NOT an exact marker for True North. It is closer than magnetic, but it still off 1°. True North is a fixed geologic location, not based on celestial navigation points. Polaris is not actually fixed, it's a trinary system that only appears to be fixed. It adjusts position depending on our solar system's place in the galaxy, as we move within our arm of the Milky Way and as our arm orbits around the SMBH at the heart of our galaxy. Polaris has only been the North Star for the last 2,000 years and will eventually move out of it's position in relation to our observations as it being a "fixed" North position. In approximately another 2,000 years, Polaris will be out of position and Errai will be observed as our North Star. I really miss teaching Land Nav. I still occasionally teach pilots survival and include Land Nav, if your GPS fails you need back ups to navigate by. I included Land Nav and Celestial Navigation.

Apparently, you are completely unaware of the Volunteer Search and Rescue Community in North American, where this is standard basic training. Well at least you mentioned declination (but you did not address that in relation to the declination settings on a compass). In Canada, we are trained to do this without the protractor. Thank you for showing the pacing. It stumps a lot of people. We call the'Ranger beads' Pacing beads.

How was the "38 and 35" 1:24,000 scale markers determined? Was it known and Pat Mac is showing how to find where you are if that information is known or did he use the protractor's coordinate scale to determine where they were? It was hard to see how he used the scale markers relative to the grid to find the exact point

L.A.R.S. = left add right subtract.. u have to use the declination Diagram to make sure u use the "Lars" method to make sure ur compass is properly "DECLINATED" Magnetic North is obviously going to effect the compass needle so your mission is to properly set your compass up prior to your Squad's patrol {map recon happens before the actual recon} "RANGER BEADS" are also pretty essential to get stuff in squared away land nav talk. pace count's are easier with Ranger beads. Pace counts are important also {100 meter walk regular stride. every time YOUR LEFT FOOT FOOT STRIKES THE DECK IS YOUR COUNT! my Pace count is 67 I am six feet tall...

Great refresher video! It's been more then a decade since I have done this. One little nit question; if your initial position is [17SPU]4638 9935 and you are navigating to 4635 9975 (11:26), the easting track would be west by 30 meters and north by 400 meters. That direction would be NNW (about 355 degrees) and not NNE (16 degree - 13:35). A 16 degree heading, from the initial position for about 400 meters, would be somewhere close to 4649 9974? I could be totally off-base, though. Thanks for this video!

Eight degrees of magnetic declination?! Holy cow I am used to a maximum 2º on the maps of my country. Actually I am used to even neglecting to apply the adjust (because honestly my own error following a compass direction is going to be bigger than 2º). But 8º? Man, you really want to apply the declination there. You americans have a crazy country. Even at topographic level!

Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I definitely feel that if you're going out into the backcountry or off trail with just a GPS (or even just your phone!), you're asking for trouble. Batteries die, signal gets lost or refracts giving an inaccurate fix, devices get lost or broken, and most important of all you don't actually have full awareness of your environment (especially as it relates to navigating), because you've just been blindly following a GPS. It's definitely nice to have a GPS so you can double-check things, be very accurate and quick when you need to know exactly where you are, etc., but in my mind it definitely shouldn't be relied upon.
