I was obese and when I found out I was pre diabetic I started a diet and to exercise (I also have a thyroid problem), lost 60 pounds and I'm on my ideal weight and no longer pre diabetic, we all know what we have to do, we just don't do it.

Typical addict behavior using kids at an excuse not to get help. My bio mom was a meth head and alcoholic. She got an intervention and a one trip ticket to rehab but decided she’d go...but only if my 3 younger siblings said it was okay...2 years later she’s dead from total organ failure at 46. Whether it be food, alcohol, drugs if you have a child or are responsible for them. Either get help or give the kid to someone who is a rational human being and is not okay with allowing a child watch them die because you are too selfish to seek help. I know how hard it is to get help and I know how hard it is to fight. I had to deal with a spice addiction and an toxic abusive fiancé who was my BIGGEST addiction. My whole family thought I was gonna die from my addiction; he was gonna kill me. in the end I woke the fuck up and realized what I was doing to myself and what my child was facing without me. A father killing the mother. I knew what my child was facing cause in 3 generations no one had broken the cycle and everyone died from their addiction, grandad pills, grandma coke, my mom meth and alcohol all dead. I was next on the line and my daughter after that. That’s something I could not live with so I broke the cycle, beat my addiction, found a REAL man who is helping me continue with my recovery and my daughter has a real father. If you can’t live for yourself find something or someone to live for or perish and be responsible for your love ones pain, become the person they avoid talking about, die an addict. I never got to meet my mom cause of her addiction, my siblings had to watch her die 2 of them were under age, 6 months later my grandmother dies so they watched that as well. My husband had to watch his uncle die from alcohol. I know 4 people who have watched people die from addiction, my own child was watching me die from mine and although I didn’t watch my mom die I will NEVER get to meet the woman who gave birth to me. All of this cause addiction. Seek help. Stop letting your brain convince you that you‘ll get help eventually. Eventually might never come and your family will have to clean up the mess. If you can’t love yourself enough to get help do it for them.

The problem with weight loss goals are that no one wants to go to the doctor if they feel the weight has increased. Going to the doctor and getting weighed in is a positive reinforcement as long as you have lost weight during that period. Going to the doctor and finding out you’ve gained weight is a negative reinforcement and you end up punishing yourself.

I understand that a large number of people glorify Dr. Now's directness, however, holding someone with an eating disorder "to account" isn't a remedy. Alternately, there are more appropriate root questions to be asked that will cause some self-reflection and honest self-evaluation. Like in this case, she seems afraid to go, she's palpably apprehensive. Why? People are looking at her excuses as the issue but there's a much deeper conversation to be had and it doesn't involve finger pointing. There's enough guilt and self-soothing that comes with overeating.

I've been watching these episodes, and it makes me absolutely *FURIOUS* seeing the families of these patients. Not only they do not help, they continue to enable by buying desserts, fast food in front of the person. It's like they're purposely trying to test them to see how much longer until the person finally breaks down. They appear to be the worst bullies, enemies. Not once did I hear a husband, a wife, a sister, a mother say encouraging words like "you can do this", "you're worth everything", "we love you and we want to see you change your life for the better". Instead, they don't want any change. What are they fearing? That their beloved family member will succeed and be happy? That they feel insecure about having their own courage to do something like this? Looking at the family members, who also seem to be suffering from obesity, this problem travels down in a chain like "I'm going down and taking you with me." Well, don't let anyone, ANYONE manipulate you this way, and don't let anyone bully you. When I tried to lose weight first time, I asked my boyfriend at the time to start working out with me. I said that I first wanted to start walking, and then building up my strength and eventually increasing intensity. He would start to run really fast and tried pushing me to do the same. He'd see me struggle and be out of breath, and I could see the smirk on his face and the way he made me feel for not being able to keep up with him. I felt really let down, and quickly built a barrier. He made me feel like a loser. When we broke up, I ended up losing nearly 30 pounds, which was beyond the goal I set for myself, just by walking two hours a day, and stopped eating candy and cake. But lost it the healthy way, without letting anyone put me down. I know, my situation wasn't severe like having to get a surgery, but I wanted to share my experience. So, I hope my story will help other girls, women or men to realize that you are strong, and that you have the power to make the change for yourself, and if you are not getting the support you need from your so-called significant other, then they are NOT who you should be with. It's time to leave and find the one who will love you unconditionally, and be there by your side to comfort you and encourage you through the struggles.

It is a shame that patients use excuses or waste Dr. Now's time, even though they know it's killing them. But people have to understand, food to them is a drug. It's an engrained habit that they have done for years. And the fact they still have to eat but still resist the bad urges is extremely difficult. People that have never had an addiction can't understand.

I still believe it can't be as bad as alcohol or drugs. Quit food addiction like theirs might have psychological side effects but I doubt it has physical side effects like quit alcohol cold turkey. Those can be deadly...
