I had the breakfast MRE with the omelet a couple times, and it was nice to have something different. The best one was in the green zone embassy(go figure), and I think it was Ramadi that wasn't too bad either. The couple times I ended up in Taji, I just grabbed a couple bowls of cereal off the rack, and ate in the truck.

I have made homemade Chili, and mixed it with separately-cooked "Macaroni" {various kinds of pasta, depending on the mood} and told people "just try it, trust me, it's Army Food..." and they're always like HOLY SHIT, *ARMY FOOD* IS THE BOMB!!! I NEVER THOUGHT OF EATING CHILI LIKE THIS!!! lol.

Adding my two cents from a Vietnam Vet 1st and 25th Infantry Divisions 1968-1970. MREs were just being introduced when I was there and we were limited to 1 or 2 meals each on say a 4-5 day mission the rest were good old canned Cs. We thought the MREs were gourmet back then and of course light weight too! I recall Chili Mac was a favorite if you could get it. Everybody carried a bottle of Tabasco up on his steel pot next to the bug juice. Never got em mixed up thank goodness! Tried to make the most of what we had. Thanks for your service and thanks for sharing! 🫡 🇺🇸

@@WillieBrownsWeiner Your correct! The ones I’m referring to were actual called LRP dehydrated ration developed in 1964 for long range reconnaissance patrols. They were on limited occasions given to our infantry companies in lieu of the canned c-rations when available.

In 2006 half of the norwegian force in afghanistan was put in hospital. A sick local was washing in the german camp, washing the plates with cold water. After that we started a food for ammunition program with the US trading 9mm for MRE's. We lived only in MRE's for two months until we had a own Dfac in place. Must say it was a lottery between very good and horrible :-) Best food i had was a local kebab in Kabul in 2003 from what we called "fat ass sheep". It was so delicious

There were three things I wanted to comment on this video, and I will save the best for last because you gave me chills when you talked about it. First, the Army would try to spoil us with Jimmy Deans and I would rather eat an MRE. Second, there was a pub owned by the Brits called 'The Camel Mosquito' somewhere in the green zone with beer available. It was the first time I tried Strongbow, and there's this awkward staring contest being an E4 and watching the fobbit E-7/E-8/O-4/O-5 walk in and make their way to the bar. Last, in late '05 or early '06 we worked a PSD mission for the MNFI C2 BG to the Iraqi president or president elect's house where it was just south of VBC, and instead of going over the bridge you stayed to the right to go near under the bridge to get to the house. There was that huge fish with the head still on, and it looked like shit for food being served at the president's house. I'm not a picky eater, but I did not like a single item of food on that table. There was a liter bottle with an Arabic printed label with milk that I assumed came from the store. It was a reused water bottle with fresh goat milk that was the worst thing I have ever drank, and we made sure everyone tried it just for the experience of something so gross. Maybe we were at the same place at the same time, or maybe not.

In Central America in the mid 80’s we were given c-rations from the Korean War era, the spaghetti and meatballs were awesome! As for the MRE’s, chicken a la king and chicken and dumplings and the beef stew were the best; don’t think that chili Mac was an option even in the late 90’s.

Chili Mac is the only acceptable MRE for sure. For the first few months we had to eat only MREs or food cooked over 50 gal oil drums with fire fueled by gasoline and trash!
