Everyone is missing the biggest clue in the whole scene that the investigator set up at 4:05, he says "people walking around 'alive' ".he's only supposed to be missing so he was waiting for Patrick's response which he messed up

I don't think Patrick responded with "Nothing..." is as incriminating as it sounds. It's certainly a poor choice of words and is very suspicious. However, it cannot stand on its own to pin it on Patrick.

I think the most suspicious thing was his immediate engagement in the "curiosity" of people disappearing, immediately coming up with his own feeling-inducing metaphor about it, when in fact he should be really concerned and worried about a staff member and not finding it humorous at all.

Fun Fact: They should two takes for this scene. One where Kimball acts like he has no idea what Bateman is up to and another where he 100% suspects his guilt. They then spliced the two together alternating back and forth while he interviews Bateman to create an uneasy tension and almost hallucinatory effect. Brilliant stuff. This movie is awesome.

I love the entire thought process of this scene. Patrick is a fake from the start, and he believes in his heart that Kimball isn't picking up on it. Kimball, from the start, just wants some basic information, but as the conversation goes on, he begins to 'know' Patrick had something to do with it.

The book actually makes pat look pretty guilty during this part, he tries his best to act normal and human but he struggles, especially since he's making everything up as he goes. In the book he talks on the phone for a bit longer before talking to the detective, and as he's watching Kimball look around his office he gets uncomfortable which causes him to stop talking into the phone for sometime before he realizes he's still supposed to be talking and Kimball looks at him strangely. Then when Kimball asks where he went to school, he's much more reluctant to answer and is almost unsure of it because he says it as a question. "He went to yale.. right?" Which makes him look suspicious considering his comment about him being apart of "that whole Yale thing". He is so unorganized in his thoughts that he really isn't sure how he was able to play his way out of this interaction.

"I just wanted to know if you knew." Bateman knew the point of the meeting as soon as Kimbel (Defoe) made that comment. I think it's a little weird that Defoe's character didn't identify himself. What was he? A Cop or just an investigator. So an investigator for who? I think this mystery as to who Defoe's character really is adds to the intensity of the scene.

What makes this scene so unpredictable is that Defoe actually did three takes - one where he was certain that Patrick was innocent, one where he was unsure either way, and another where he was certain Patrick was guilty. They spliced those together and it really throws you for a loop when his demeanor completely changes. Fantastic movie

Once you're labeled a character actor. It's hard for people to see that you are even capable of a captivating performance. Nicholas Cage and Adam Sandler are very much capable but so much of what people think are their personalities is what they see when they embody roles they take. Id probably put Steven Seagal I'm that list though, I've yet to see anything he's done in film that would prove otherwise.
