The fact that Disney tried SO HARD after Miley, Demi and Selena but somehow never made it even though the next generation was talented af is still beyond me. Bridget Mendler, Zendaya, Ross Lynch, Olivia Holt, Dove Cameron, Sabrina Carpenter,…. they made good music even outside their shows but somehow never really broke out like the other girlies. The fact that Olivia did proves that it’s better for them to go outside of Disney from the get go when it comes to music and take creative control straight away, instead of being held down by the picture perfect Disney girl image and the Disney approved songs that go with that
@dia.963 жыл бұрын
In the case of Bridget and Zendaya they just decided to do other stuff. Zendaya didn't like the music industry and Bridget wanted to study (i think she even has a phd now). Had Disney kept Britney, Christina, and Justin, their careers wouldn't have went as far as they had. You think Britney, you think of toxic, baby one more time, oops i did it again, etc. Justin had sexyback, what goes around comes around, rock your body, etc. Christina had a more "tame" discography, but she still had dirrty, lady marmalade, burlesque, etc. Those are the songs that shaped them as artists and boosted their careers. Disney would have NEVER given them the chance to release those songs. Disney could have made them stars, but they could not have made them the global icons they were and are today. I think of Demi, Miley, Selena, Ariana, etc. and I don't associate them with disney or nickelodeon anymore. In their case, their shows are what started and catapulted their careers, but I associate them with their more mature bodies of work they released later on, and think of Disney/Nick as being just a little rough bump they had to go through to get where they are today.

Like, compared to when I was a kid and actually watched kid shows on tv, now I just binge multiply shows at once. Also, the popular "teen" shows now are all super dark compared to old teen shows, like, when I think of teen shows now I think of Netflix or CW. But also you're right in the fact that there are a lot of times we just watch youtube or tiktok. @tyrelbass3 жыл бұрын
@@YenellyT yea Demi was in an unfortunate situation, but I wouldn’t say they were overworked, majority of actors from kids shows say their time on set was fun and it didn’t even feel like work. Even skye Jackson in a recent video she made that everyone always had a great time and and she would often hang out with the cast of other shows cause they filmed in the same lot , and everyone would get together and play basketball or something when they weren’t shooting. Now maybe Selena , Miley and Demi probably had a Bigger load on their shoulders because they were pushed as the role models, were the leads of their own shows and they had to keep up with they’re music careers. Even tho they were young , without all that hard work they probably wouldn’t have been as successful as they became and till this day they still a lot more relevant compared to other Disney stars. And others that had bad experiences were put into the industry by their parents and didn’t even really have the passion to be in the entertainment business to begin with like jennet Mccurty. The media doesn’t help either when they make minor things that most teens do seem like a bigger deal just because they play a innocent character on tv, that adds to the pressure for some people.

Another interesting fact to look at is just the larger awareness of how a lot of labels mistreat and exploit new talent. Taylor Swift, for example, is very vocal about artists' rights to their work. That self-advocacy didn't exist in the 2000s/early 2010s, so it was much easier for Disney to milk their stars. Olivia Rodrigo owns her masters and insisted on it because she saw how others were screwed over, and I'm sure the mouse would've never given her that
@anyssamoya15593 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point. I think with the rise of social media, a more "progressive" media, and even youtube video essays like this one have all contributed to this sort of demystification of the entertainment industry. I mean, Britney Spears has been all over the news recently, not because of new music, but because of a legal case that is a clear example of how these huge popstars can be exploited and controlled. As you said, aritsts have more self-advocacy than before, and even fans are more aware and sympathetic to the artists they support. I did not know Olivia owned her masters, that's great! I know at one point The Weeknd had exactly that advice to new artists starting out: own your work.
@SR-zv5ue3 жыл бұрын
Taylor Swift is not the first artist to talk about and being exploited for music. There were many artists that were vocal and huge who talked about being explolited from their labels that were bigger names than her. Prince, TLC, Toni Braxton, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey. Taylor really didn't do anything special in terms of getting artists progressive record deals. It's just about having a good lawyer at the end of the day and how bankable you are as an artist.

Selena was definitely the last stronghold when it came to shows and music for Disney. Wizards finale was one of the most watched and then her Stars Dance album did pretty well. Obviously Demi was super successful with Disney but her show ended by 2010 and she kinda fell down after she left Hollywood records- I feel like Selena had the most smooth transition out of the three cause she was the most followed person on Instagram for a very long time (until like 2019 but she’s still top 5) and she didn’t have an overly sexualized era or a scandalous era like both miley and Demi had .

Selena’s music was not the stronghold. If anything it’s Miley by a landslide. Don’t you remember how big Hannah Montana was? All her tours sold out quickly and her albums were number 1 in the country for a while. She then went on to release two or three album WITH HOLLYWOOD RECORDS as her label and she is the most listened to Argentine singer in Spotify (or something like that). I think part of the problem for Disney is that in the '10s we somewhat moved away from the "manufactured" pop star a la Britney and Christina and towards more authentic-feeling, singer-songwriter types a la Taylor Swift and then later people like Halsey and Billie Eilish. It's not like Disney wasn't trying their damnedest throughout the '10s to strike gold again with people like Dove Cameron, Laura Marano, Ross Lynch, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Holt. It's just that it's a much trickier formula now that pretty face + decent voice + catchy songs by other songwriters = hits. Disney is only just starting to figure that out, and letting both Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett actually write songs for HSM the series shows they're starting to recognize the value of developing songwriters and not just singers. The issue they're going to run into is... what young singer-songwriter nowadays would actually want to sign with Hollywood Records? Olivia shows the potential of what you can do if you take your talent elsewhere, and then you also have people like Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, and the Jonas Brothers who have been pretty vocal about how stifling Hollywood Records/the Disney machine can be.
@Azoria_J3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think it's even trickier cause they continue to promote this idea "anyone can be a star" and teenagers would believe this lie. And let be honest Olivia is from a very privileged family as a lot of nowadays disney stars.

@maelyssjoubrel97092 жыл бұрын
I think you have the best comment here, like you said, now it's not just about being pretty and have catchy melodies, people are more demanding of good songwritting, which we all know is not a good quality of Disney... A lot of money was spent producing albums and hiring the best people. These days the albums are rush jobs produced in-house so you forget them the next day. Plus digital music wasn't a thing so you only owned music if you really liked it, having to pay a lot of money for the album, and there was less stuff being broadcast competing for your focus. Popstars these days are a dime a dozen so it's much harder to get people's long-lasting attention. Plus she was the first teen blonde bombshell popstar of more modern times so she was memorable. Record companies tried to emulate the model but most of them just faded away after a few hits.

Their song “Hold On” promoted Disney’s Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board. The band sang a new version of Disney’s TV show American Dragon: Jake Long. Interesting stuff, and I didn't watch or listen to any of it, but it's impressive. A couple of things: First, having a channel or record label was a fantastic infrastructure until everything diversified with online music and shows. Attention is a currency, and Disney figured out how to use the popularity of a show to bankroll a record with audience attention, then maybe another record and a movie. That's a perfect example of synergistic marketing. Second, attention is also finite and fatigue happens. They started to slump even before the platform shattered, so they might have figured out where their limits are. Assuming they figure out how to use online platforms, it could happen again, but they need to know when to stop, or at least when to move on to a new, younger star. Great video.

Fun Fact: Taylor Swift & Hayley Williams have writing credits on Olivia Rodrigos Sour Album. Honestly if you check the the credits on SOUR its fucking crazy sand unbelievable somebody dumped tons of money in this album and advertising to get her going. Also, Olivia Rodrigo is special not only in this case but Disney has invested in all of its stars to have a music presence. Olivia just popped massively its not that Disney took a break. Nobody just had as much appeal as Rodrigo the formula has and will always be the same. They’re kinda just throwing shit out there to see what sticks and if it does well more power to them you know.

If it hits then generally they’ll put money into an album, if doesnt then they move the star on and get them back to the show or whatever movie theyre working on. Olivia Rodrigo is special because her song hit hard especially Drivers License . theres no reason to be bitter about it. Its not like they predicted she would become a literally mega star, its just what they do and its the formula. when they saw that the song was blowing up ofcourse they’re going to put money behind it. Why wouldn’t they, you think that a 18 year old Disney channel star is getting writing credits from Hayley Williams and Taylor swift based off merit alone? No she streamed heavy and Disney put the machine behind her and people identified with those lyrics. Also Olivia is coincidently Asian being Philippine interestingly enough despite having the last name Rodrigo its not hard to believe she might be streamed heavy in Asian and also in Spanish territories with people thinking she was Spanish.

On the finders fee thing: Disney wouldn't be able to do that because a lifetime contract like that would expire as soon as the child turned 18 as any contract signed on their behalf before that date would no longer be considered legally binding. It's likely that Olivia waited until her contract expired and then quietly dipped out
@_Kim_Possible3 жыл бұрын
I think Disney could still have a finders fee/cut in her current set-up. Olivia released music w/Interscope before her 18th birthday while on Disney+ show. And Disney could have control of her solo career well after her Disney days. This is related but with a boyband Why Don't We, their case w/management went public bc they were trying to break contract with ex-management team who were abusive. In their contracts that they signed as minors, the management STILL had control and management claims over their solo careers. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney worked a clause like that in the contract, they are extremely controlling
@termythewormy3 жыл бұрын
@@_Kim_Possible Disney could attempt to work that in but the clause wouldn't be considered legal so Olivia Rodrigo would not have to abide by it, even with music she released before her 18th birthday as long as it wasn't released through Disney. It's likely she wouldn't even have to sue, she could just stop paying them and Disney wouldn't have grounds to sue because the contract itself would be considered unenforceable as employment contracts for minors in California have a 7 year term limit anyway. They could try but they would likely be laughed out of court. Clauses like that depend on people not knowing any better. I also can't find any sort of article saying Why Don't We had an issue breaking contract with their former managers. The only lawsuit I could find was the two managers suing each other and the boyband coming out to speak on the horrible conditions they suffered under those managers. Nothing about them not being able to break contract post 18th birthday or the management team having control of their solo careers after they reached adulthood. If you have an article detailing that aspect of it, I would love to read it though.

I used to think that you couldn’t hold minors to agreements past 18 until I read the WDW article. On top of that I remember people passing rumors around that some 5H members are bound by contract even solo. Another music contract that is wild is 5SOS, they (signed as minors) were basically owned in a 50-50 split by 1D & Modest. Even after 1D split members still made money off of 5SOS until 2018. Contracts are crazy. Also Disney could still get a cut from her music kinda like a 360 deal. Like how labels make money off of artists’ merch or even promotions

@@DR-fc1ey Only time will tell honestly. This is just purely speculation. And her owning masters doesn’t take away from Disney having a 360 deal on her (or their stars). I think one piece of the argument that everyone's missing is that Olivia is the Disney pop star that is the furthest associated with Disney. Because she's not on the Disney record label, she's able to curse on her albums, which, if she was being controlled/guided by Disney, would have been a different story, perhaps? I mean, let's pick Miley Cyrus. The moment Miley Cyrus started being seen as a "ex-Disney pop star led astray" was when she released the Bangerz album, completely shattering the idea people had of her. But with Olívia, that disney association was never that strong in the first place. In her first album, she's already cursing, and talking about how she hates being 17, and how she is overworked. Maybe Disney is going to put out these pop stars that have less restrictions, and that are not even publicly strongly associated with Disney, to create an idea of authenticness. Orr, maybe Olivia is just a talented teen girl that was given a really big platform via Disney, but also managed to have control over her own music? It's hard to say. The contract theory would make sense, since they would be able to cash on an artist like Olívia without having to deal with the consequences of having a Disney pop star cursing.
@FilipKotula3 жыл бұрын
well miley cyrus was able to release a highly controversial album at the time, can’t be tamed at 17, under disney’s label. they refused to fund her projects though, miley herself said she had to pay for the music videos herself. that is way more powerful to me

I think with Olivia they are actually reversing the formula: allow their show to get a star a record label, even if outside Disney, but then use the wider fame brought about by the subsequent records to bring attention to their show through that star. It doesn't matter what label signs Olivia because ultimately, people don't pay attention to the record label behind an album. They see Olivia, they see she's in a show, they watch the show. Disney gets subscribers regardless and doesn't even have to produce an album themselves.

And internet celebrities were getting record deals, book deals, movies, TV Shows, etc. And let's not forget about how some Tiktok Stars are also getting roles in Netflix movies and are starting to become pop stars. Fun fact: That’s So Raven was originally going to star her friend Chelsea, but they changed their minds after the first episode. They starred Raven instead of the actor Anneliese van der Pol. Disney has become a master of scheming. Let's just think about the animation renaissance period and the MCU universe project. Kind of fascinating how good they are at it, no wonder they almost monopolized the entire industry and they are one if not the biggest household name in the entertainment world today. At this point I don't think they find the formula, but rather dictate it.

I would say Justin Bieber's come up starting in late 2009 also contributed for this. He was the latest teen pop star and the scene and got an insane amount of attention, was getting compared to the Beatlemania. But there was a more "seriousness" to his artistry since he was connected to someone like Usher (and Justin Timberlake) and not Disney, so in my opinion his reach was broader. He was nominated for 2 Grammys in his debut year, something we'd didn't think we'd see from a Disney act (except the Jonas Brothers the year prior). A lot of his fans came from the fandoms of the stars you mentioned, namely the Jonas Brothers - including myself, and I can surely attest that a lot of other Justin Bieber fans were Jonas Brothers fans. There was even some tension since Justin was clearly overshadowing the band, they shared the same initials (JB, they even fought over that). Selena who was Disney's biggest star at the time, was suddenly being seen around Justin - she had previously dated Nick Jonas. In my opinion her relationship with Justin is also what allowed her to make a smooth transition to Disney act to mainstream pop star, the smoothest between all of her fellow Disney acts. An example of a great PR move - although I do believe at some point they did end up dating seriously. And you know it was indeed PR because they had attempted the same thing with Miley and Justin, but Justin's image was still pristine while Miley's was gradually getting worse. Selena was the safest choice and it worked wonders for both of them, seemingly toxic relationship aside...

@@auxiccc I agree! I also think Miley was clearly the main Disney girl despite all the controversy. I only repeated what was said on the video 😅 I mean she had the hits, the platinum albums, the sold out tours. I think in summer 2010 Miley and Justin performed his song “Overboard” at his MSG concert, I’m pretty sure it’s on a tour DVD of his. This, in my opinion, was their teams setting the scene up for an eventual public relationship. A concert at MSG was one of his biggest dreams and it was a huge deal (obviously, it’s Madison Square Garden), and Overboard is a very romantic song for a duo. In November of that same year they’re both seen on a “date”. Miley would talk about how Justin would “prank call her at 3AM”. Setting the scene up for a cute, playful puppy love relationship. That same month, Miley had her birthday party, the p*nis cake one… very adult theme. In December, a video of her smoking weed was leaked, and the photos of that birthday party get leaked in January 2011. It was scandal after scandal. Her being associated with Justin could damage his reputation, so Miley gets discarded, and the very next month, February 2011, Justin and Selena make it official at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. I do agree that Selena always seems to be seen around the right people. And like you said, this isn’t to call her a clout chaser or opportunist… it’s to praise her PR team, lol

Cyrus had a family in for music. Granted she outshined her father but Billy Ray was a big name.

I think Raven should’ve definitely been mentioned especially with the Cheetah girls and Circle of Stars arch, as well as their attempt with Dove Cameron as well. There were definitely talent they tried to milk out.

Raven had a child singing career way before she worked for Disney, and her child acting career took off with The Cosby Show. The other members of Cheetah Girls were formerly 3LW which was a pre-existing group. Basically they weren't produced by the Disney popstar factory but hired after the fact.

Didn't predict everone in the world simultaneously being famous in infinitesimally small spheres of influence though.
