I love that MatPat comes to the conclusion that the One Piece world would be just the worst. And in the series, it is just _the worst!_ All the problems that MatPat calls out in this video are rampant in the One Piece world. We have people killing marines just so they can feed their families. We have mass starvation, slavery, etc.

The only real issue about the Rain Shadow Effect that Mat talks about, is that: Yes, it's more islands, rather than land. There's over twice as much distance to be traversed. The winds over a sea are usually stronger, which is helped when.....y'know, the whole WORLD is just a sea. AND finally, we don't actually know (at least I don't) where their adventure actually starts in the East Blue. Which means that the islands JUST east of the Red Line, on both sides of the world, might be desert. But the rest SHOULD be fine on vegetation. The actual problem would be the huge, possibly frequent, hurricanes that would actually happen. But that's just my take. A DUUUUMB take! Thanks for reading.

Seeing how little time it took them to get to reverse mountain, they probably were close the grand line all the time. At some point they even get into the calm belt by accident, so they were almost at the grand line since the beginning, they were just trying to get there without dying.
@dragonbretheren
@dragonbretheren 8 ай бұрын
Also, the rain shadow exists because there's no water past the mountain range to distribute. In the One Piece world, past the Red Line mountains is... more ocean. Which could evaporate and become rain systems to islands just east of the Red Line...

@@luxaeterna365Here's the other thing though: close to reverse mountain at least, the winds don't go in that direction. The winds and sea currents on all four blues head towards reverse mountain; we see this explictly in the manga. The issue si that Matpat (or whoever wrote his script) hasn't actually read the manga, he's just read a plot synopsis.
@BloodKills

One major thing he got wrong, is that the grandline does not wrap around the equator, it wraps around the world diagonally, same as the red line, so fishman island and reverse mountain are like the part the X marks.

Fun fact, we actually have the technology to turn regular seawater into drinking water by taking out all of the salt but it just takes so much energy in order for us to properly that it’s not actually worth it for us but it would probably be worth it for the people in the one piece world since they don’t have an alternative

Patternz makes a really good point. If you look at a map of the U.S., you can easily see that most east side of the country has plenty of vegetation. The rain shadow effect runs out after about over 1,000 miles. if the world of one piece really is that big, then most of the islands actually would have plenty of vegetation.

Also even though a portion of it was Croc's doing, Alabasta is an arid climate. Which after Drum Island (freezing tundra is also a desert often) is the second place they encounter in the Grand Line. Maybe he did not research that bit? Also there is the suspicion still speculated to this day if the Red Line is artificial.

So my knowledge of One Piece is YEARS behind the current episodes, but there are so many things on that world - before we even consider magic - that would make no sense. I think Matt was focusing more on the science in that sense, such as “would life be able to survive on this world” and “if life could survive without magical intervention, what would life look like.” Long and short - life would struggle VERY hard on this planet and likely largely exist deep in the sea. Surface waters would be very hot, and land would probably be dominated by some smatterings of terrestrial life in little pockets where conditions were more stable. Most islands would be wastelands, and sea faring would be a death sentence.

The 1st 2 Islands in the Grandline, Whiskey Peak and Little Garden, are even summer islands so we do get to see the effect he talks about take place and everything is fine because, again, the Red line isn't big enough to have that effect THAT far away from it 2)The Grandline is not the equator, it is 45° to it. That means that most of the Grandline isn't being drastically heated by the sun like he suggested and 2 of the 4 blues have sections that do sit on the equator so instead it does have the sea currents in the one piece world disperse heat in basically the same way our world does just in "smaller" sections than ours (smaller is in quotes because the world is much bigger than ours so those sections are actually bigger but a smaller % of the planet)
