Fresh off an Olympic Bronze medal in the 5000m and a fast 2 mile race at Pre Classic, Paul Chelimo attends to some maintenance tempo work in preparation for the upcoming 5th Avenue Mile.
Coach Scott Simmons prescribes a 3 mile tempo although Chelimo ends up doing 4 miles. Training partners Sam Chelanga and Dante Augustt join Chelimo and share their thoughts on Nike's training shoes, Chelimo's new business venture at Artiken (artiken.com/) and much more.

In the classic running book "Train Hard, Win Easy" there's a chapter that's about the mindset of Kenyan training groups. If one runner wins a race, everbody in the group has won it. Because they did their hard training together. That's what Dante and Paul were talking about.

This channel is insanely good. I'm purely a hobbyjogger, not even close to the level of these guys, but somehow watching them in this casual atmosphere, listening to the banter, seeing the effort and the sweat and hearing the footstrikes, inspires me to push myself on the roads in my own way. I wish more training channels took this no-frills approach to production, you guys kick ass.

Paul talking about "dropping out" in the end is so damn true, even for a total amateur runner as myself. I used to have this mentality where my brain would go "c'mon, just walk for a little bit...you could walk now...stop now", sometimes I even stopped and walked on the exact same spot on every run regardless to if I was tired or not. The last year I've tried to block that out and just keep on going and today I can run probably double the distance compared to before.

Many Kenians including Paul Chelimo have a considerable body lean. I often hear trainers remark on running more upright which does not make a lot of sense to me. The only thing I can see is the difference between being hunched over with a bent back or actually tilting the body forward while keeping a straight back. When moving forward at speed it only makes sense to lean into the direction of travel.

I love the tempos. Yea it’s heavy but once you get moving you don’t feel the weight. Definitely a good shoe for someone who runs on the ball of their foot. And when you wear the alphas, ooohhh do they feel light as feather. This video was solid good stuff at the end. 💪

That stride length is impressive! If run at that pace my cadence is above 190 and I'm exhausted after 1km :D. My goal is to run a sub 37 10k next week, did a 1:29 HM in early summer so this would be a huge improvement.

@Emil-yd1ge 2 жыл бұрын
@@danielkopperud8789 Not that well, I went out too fast, and because it was hilly and I was not that well rested, I had to slow down to about 4:05 pace after 3km, but at least I could hold it until the finish. Ran a 39:40, a time which I rutinely break in training during all kinds of runs (even 18km+ ones) by now :D but I increased my volume a lot after that race (85km average). Now training for a sub 1:20 HM by late April.

It's a real shame IMO that shoe technology has made such an impact. Everyone buys 250+ dollar shoes and no one is the wiser. Oh wait, the shoe manufacturers are. I made the switch to barefoot/ minimal a few years back and it changed the whole experience, not to mention achieving the best running form and speed of my life. And can it be done on an elite level? You bet! Check out Nicholas Filippazzo (El Coyote Loco) here on YT - a true inspiration.
