Paul very carefully choosing his words here and stating it’s not the Beatles without John, while not revealing that it would indeed be a full Beatles project with John’s presence in the form of his demo recordings! Fascinating to hear that this was in the works over a year before they’d even started working on ‘Free as a Bird’, and two years before its release.

In 1993 I've always heard the rumor about the TV documentary and the music bed for the series, but I never heard the audio - and video of the source! I really didn't think much of it, thinking it was not real until 1995 when the special was finally released. Thank you for sharing this footage!

Interesting to hear Paul mention the Anthology series by name over two years before it would even come out.

The idea of a self produced biographical documentary was around since the early 1970's. There's interviews with John where he openly talks about it, saying it was going to be called "The Long And Winding Road" and that Neil Aspinall was gathering films & footage that the Beatles themselves had. Rumours of the project popped up occasionally but nothing was ever concrete. Remember, Paul and Yoko, George & Ringo were still involved in business squabbles and lawsuits long after John passed away. When they were inducted into the Rock n'Roll Hall of Fame in '88 McCartney wouldn't attend because of the disharmony over the Apple business. They all finally arrived at an agreement everyone was satisfied with in the early 90's so with tensions eased the documentary idea came up again and they all agreed it was time. This interview where McCartney acknowledges the project was in 1993, "Free As A Bird" sessions were in 1994 & "Real Love" was done in early 1995. The "new" song that McCartney announced last week is "Now And Then", a song they attempted to finish so the third Anthology album would have a new song like the first two sets did. Unfortunately too much hum & distortion was present on the years old cassette demo and Harrison reportedly said "This is shit.", meaning the song wasn't up to Lennon's or their standards. McCartney has always wanted it finished and released. AI is being used to clean up the audio NOT to add instrumentation or vocals created by the AI technology.

Yes but when he wrote that they didn’t really know how credits worked, so George got credit just for the solo!

How did he get back into Japan so soon after the whole 1980 incedent?
@ExtremeBeatlesArchive Жыл бұрын
Well, it was 13 years later. He also was there in 1990. I'll tell you one thing... Japanese customs searched our bags VERY thoroughly coming in.

There was a lot of back and forth with McCartney's attorneys and assistants. It took a long to convince the authorities in Japan to let him back into their country. Due to his multiple drug arrests Japan was reluctant to let enter in January of 1980 and he had to sign a document stating he promised to not bring in any substances. Of course we all knew what happened there. He betrayed their trust and he paid dearly for it. He was facing the possibility of being sent to prison for years due to the amount of marijuana he tried to smuggle into their country. He had excellent legal representation with the Eastmans and their ability to find top-notch legal representation in Japan.
