for a while simple playing was underrated by everyone other than punks. Now people finally respect rhythm section again, and even casual listeners dig the pocket... but all the fuss is mostly about funk and R&B, so same as usual only heads care about punk. 😎

Man, I've been playing along to Pixies songs for years. Although I was technically playing them right, I found that I could never quite lock in with what Kim was playing. Then I watched this video; NO DYNAMICS, downstrokes only, and prioritise the snare over the kick. Wow, now I'm instantly playing in the pocket on every song. These videos are genuinely making me a better bass player. Thanks again for another great lesson!!!

Next bass Kim: Kim Gordon, please! I always learn something from your videos and it’s cool to see women bassists represented.

Kim Deal is very musical. She's a great songwriter. Impressively, even as a young musician, it felt like she wasn't trying to impress anyone -- she just liked music and wanted to play what sounded right to her. Her whole vibe feels like you and your buddies playing in a garage band, but she's really good at her craft and very creative. Her playing and singing feel authentic and sound good, and she has a good feel for getting the right groove for her bands' songs. Furthermore, I feel like if you listen to Kim's bass intros on Surfer Rosa and then you listen to some Nirvana, it seems to me that Kim influenced Krist Novoselic's bass style. Listen to Kim's bass intro to Hey and then listen to Krist's bass intro to, for example, Polly. I feel like Kim's bass was definitely a stylistic influence.

Kim Deal is one of my favourite bass players! I’m just a guitar player who loves your videos because I’m learning so much about how bass arrangements work. How about a video on Carol Kaye?

she is a genius of harmonic progression. Something totally fundamental for any musician bass player and many of their's songs go forward beyond of tipically 4/4 and 4 or 8 chords progressions

Well done, love your explanations and analysis. Thought her gear was more complex and she uses an additional EQ and compression, but maybe with the right playing technique, the old strings and the right instrument / amp combination, this could work. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to see more videos from you.
