The F SKUs seem like a useful idea conceptually until you get to pricing, and the value just never seem to be there. 16:10 seemed to be the worst, where you have to pay $1 more to get no iGPU, but even most of the time it feels like F SKUs are never discounted enough from non-F to justify losing the iGPU.

As incredible as that CPU is (and it IS incredible, there's no doubt), AMD really outdid themselves with the 5800X3D (which is what I have) and while it is nowhere near the level of the 9800X3D, I see no reason to change what I'm already using. It's just that good. I'm expecting that I won't need to upgrade until AM6 and you might just manage to make it to AM7. This is especially gratifying for me because I "suffered" through owning a Phenom II X4 940 and an FX-8350 (with Radeons going from the HD 4870 1GB to the R9 Fury). The reason I say "suffered" wasn't because of the CPUs or GPUs themselves (in hindsight, I would have made the same choices again), but because of all the Intel/nVidia fanboys who crowed about their super-high frame rates and made belittling remarks towards my PC because there was no green or blue in it. What's really ironic is that this happened back when pretty much ALL monitors at the time were 60Hz. I chose the Phenom II X4 940 over the Q9400 because the platform cost was about half even though the performance was comparable. I chose the FX-8350 because I got it brand-new for $170CAD with a 990FX mobo and 16GB of DDR3-1333 costing me only $200CAD. That's $370 but an i7 build at the time would have cost me close to $700. I knew that the 8 ALUs of the FX-8350 wouldn't be hyper fast in gaming but would be fast enough and the CPU wouldn't slow down over time as games and other programs became more threaded. It lasted me for five years and is the best value CPU that I've ever owned except for maybe my current R7-5800X3D (which I got on sale for $100CAD off). Because of people like me who had the foresight and knowledge to choose AMD (and ATi) during those times, AMD survived to bring us Ryzen (which of course led to X3D).

Microcenter has some good bundles for Black Friday right now. Decide if you game or if you will be doing lots of video production to decide which CPU to buy. Not sure if Paul mentions it, but the 13 and 14 gen intel parts had significant issues, with many CPU being RMA’d. Intel claims that the issues have been resolved, but it is hard to trust those generations. And do not buy a used one. AMD is hard to beat in gaming with their X3D CPU, even the 5700 x3d is a good performer for gaming. That is the older platform, but it is inexpensive and often outperforms 12900k / 13900k .

I dont know, its fantastic when im gaming Cyberpunk or something else, but the slow cores and uninspiring windows compatibility is making me slightly regret it. Imo I should've waited a year and went 9600x or 9700x instead, I bought the 5800x3d last winter. The 12700k is a great buy aswell if you have a mobo for it.

In consideration of the entire budget concern, it makes sense to purchase a CPU WITH the graphics. At least you have fair graphics until you can unload another $500+ for a graphics card. Makes a lot of sense for those builders who want a system up and running without spending a good half as much additionally for just the graphics. Those $30 extra for iGraphics is worth it in my opinion.

I really don't know a ton about PC stuff so please bear with me. In 2017 my cousin helped me build a PC using my graduation money. Right now I was trying to upgrade it so I could play more modern games. I went from a 1060 to a zotac 4060 solo. I got the solo because my case is very small and it fits perfectly. The new graphics card is awesome and works great. I plan on upgrading my ram to 32 gb soon as well. Anyway, I got an intel i7-9700 to replace the i5-7600k. My mother board is an ASRock Z270M-ITX/ac, and because it has the same socket as my old CPU, I assumed it would work. But because I'm stupid, I didn't realize my board didn't support much further processors. So anyway all that to say, I was wondering if there are any processors I'm not aware of that would work well? I would really like to play games like black myth Wukong, and eventually ff7 rebirth whenever it comes to PC. Is my current one too slow to do much of anything?

Hey Paul, i have a 9 year old system, i7-5600K, Asus Rog Strix 1070, 16 gigs of ram, 600W power supply, couple of samsun SSDs 250 and 1k, ,Asus z170i mini itx mother board all in a Thermaltake core P1 case, last week it just refused to power on, so i took it to a local computer guy, and after he tested it, he confirmed the motherboard had done its life. Yes, especially if you play 1440p or higher, the GPU will be the bottleneck. Just noticed, however, that you are talking about music production. DAWs and music production still benefit more for single core performance over multi core (though cores can help too, higher single core performance is more important), so actually the "gaming CPUs" might be better to look at for music production specifically. The CPU is also far more important to music production than regular use, gaming use, editing use, etc. So in music production, CPU and often RAM are the things to invest in.

In a comment to a similar video on another channel someone mentioned that where he lived he could buy a Ryzen 5 7500F slightly cheaper than a Ryzen R5 7600. Now this is interesting as the differences between these processors are that the 7600F doesn't have a integrated GPU and 100 MHz lower base clock and Max Boost clock at 3.7GHz and 5GHz respectively compared to 3.8GHz and 5.1GHz for the 7600. Everything else is the same. The performance difference between the 7500F and the 7600 is so small you probably can't feel it without running benchmarks, and they can be made up for by a very slight overclock which is just about certain it wont case any instability or problems. Now I don't know if it comes with a heatsink or how common they are in retail. I also saw a commenter say that where he shopped the 7500F was more expensive than the 7600, so that's also a possibility. And keep in mind that without a integrated GPU you absolutely need some kind of graphics card to get any kind of picture.

@@mastermachetier5594 have you checked if you are cpu bottlenecked when gaming at all? 4k and VR are very gpu demanding. Your best gaming upgrades in AM4 would be huge productivity downgrades.

@@SocratesWasRight I haven't been bottle necked with the 2080 super but i am afraid of being bottle necked with a gpu upgrade. I think the best bet is to wait regardless for 5000 serious and either get lower pricer 4080 super or a newer.. then upgrade to a different platform and repurpose this as a server for productivity stuff.

X3D chips are not only good for gaming, they are also boosting FEA simulations or CFD (at least if you have the right programs). Will be insteresting to see the 9950X3D in those benchmarks, huge cache together with high frequency.

I think the 9950X3D will be better than even the 9800X3D. This is especially true, if the 9950X3D has Dual 3D V-Cache flipped on both CCD's for full overclocking support, which should overclock FAR higher than even the 9800X3D. 5.90 GHZ to potentially 6 GHZ all core with 200MB of 3D V-Cache and an NVIDIA RTX 5090 combined? Lord just take all of my money right away. Kidney temptation level over 9000!

I can't believe you said the 14700k falls behind the x3d CPU's. How exactly? It's literally virtually as fast as the 7800x3d in games, and absolutely blows it away in all other areas, like almost 3x the performance in some productivity tasks.

Many variables. What games you play, what resolution? For example, Alan Wake 2 it doesn't matter what CPU you have, you will be GPU bottlenecked all the time even on DLSS. But with Balder's Gate 3, Flight Simulator, ACC, Cyberpunk 2077 you will gain more fps getting 7800x3D or 9800x3D even on 4K.
