Toobou is once again on top with a 1:13:17! His legacy spans every modern SMS generation and is still on top, what a legend! EDIT: Now JJsrl with the 1:13:08, and gonna continue going for 1:12. Wild times!
@poudink5791 Жыл бұрын
I was just about to comment about this. Toobou got his first any% WR in 2011 and even at the time of this video's release six years later in 2017 it was considered impressive that he was able to adapt and continue setting WRs. It has now been another six years and Toobou is still setting any% WRs. He's been going for twelve years. I don't think any other WR holder has lasted nearly as long as he has. That guy just cannot be stopped.

I think my favourite thing about both this video and your 120 shines vid is how you manage to characterize the different top tier runners and get across their traits and what made them stand out from the rest. It isn't just "Here is this person who got the world record, then this person came along and got it instead." They all feel different. They feel like a rogue's gallery or a bunch of athletes from a sporting anime with unique quirks and skills. Like, Kaffelon rising to prominence through defeating the other top tier players in live races, and being the type of guy who literally detonates his mic. Toubou being this grizzled, long standing veteren who thrived on the scene for far longer than anyone expected, and someone who almost instantly snipes the record back any time he loses it. Samu being this god tier gamer who can become a master of any game he touches. Nindiddeh being a crazy person who learned all the hardest strategies and used them beyond the point of reason until he showed everyone they'd thought wrong.
@Zzucc5 жыл бұрын
*Detonator of mics* 😂 what a title for kaffelon

His style is ok. I prefer more focus on the discovery of new glitches and tech, since that's where most of the fascinating stuff about speedrunning is to me, but I guess there's something to be said for raw skill and the focus on the people who have it as a different style to what I normally like to watch. Wonder if he'll make more videos like this...

And KingBoo97 (just looked up his channel, he has 1338 subscribers. of course someone had to break 1337) does 3D World stuff, which ... you guessed it, Italian is the fastest language (other than Japanese) for any%, which has led to them using it and people asking in the comments whether they're Italian (they're not). SMS isn't alone. (also yeah Japan likes to stick to tradition a LOT: the legal age of majority was 20 until very recently, and "20 years (old)" is pronounced differently from 18, 19, and 21 because tradition)

Dude, what kind of sorcery is this? I've never played this game, never watched a speedrun of it, not even a let's play. I know nothing about Super Mario Sunshine and I'm not even interested in speedruns of any kind, I don't even know how I got here in the first place, yet you somehow managed to make an hour long documentary about speedrunning in SMS that had me emotionally invested in the players you introduced, cheering for them and being amazed at the absurd amount of effort and skill these people put in to their passion. You sir are a true master of presentation. I don't regret a single second of watching this work of pure genius (OK, maybe that's a bit too much, but you get the idea...). I hope more people get to appreciate the work you've done, have a nice day and good luck in your future speedrunning career!

For the longest time, I didn't know that there was a 3D Super Mario game in between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. That was mostly because I don't own a Game Cube, which is also the reason I never played the game. But even after I did hear of it, I never watched a let's play of it, because I don't like let's plays in general. If I did have it back then, it probably would have been one of my favourite Games of all time (now it's Super Mario Galaxy).

Kalysta That’s exactly why I prefer this video and Retro’s Ocarina of Time World Record history. Back to my comment about saying this is a better version of Summoning Salt; he can’t do world record history videos as well as someone who speedruns the game and has experienced the history of the community/strategies/world records. Whenever I watch Summoning Salt I always feel as though there’s something missing in his videos but I don’t get that feeling while watching this. I’m not saying Summoning Salt is bad, he’s still enjoyable to watch (even if his scripts aren’t always the best) but AverageTrey went above and beyond with this video.

Something you come to realize if you see enough speedrunning: Runners talk of rivalries all the time, and there's races with one another, but when it comes right down to it, speedrunning isn't about player vs player; it's the community vs the timer.

About a week ago, I knew absolutely nothing about speed running. I always respected it as a style of gaming, but dismissed it as something I would never enjoy; it always seemed like pushing the boundaries of the game to beat it in mere hours would take away some of the enjoyment of going through the game. Then, just a couple nights ago, your video on Piantas in Need just showed up in my recommended feed, so I clicked on it and found it to be super interesting. The following morning, I watched your video about the 120-shine runs, and immediately after, watched this video. Now, I’m seriously considering getting into speed running, particularly this game, and while I haven’t made up my mind yet, if I decide to, I want to thank you for making such informational and engaging content. It’s truly inspiring to see just how much dedication people have to this game, and I want to take my love and dedication as far, if not, farther, than that.

You did a freaking amazing job on this. Not only showing off the history accurately, but also doing a good job at showing how tight the community has always been throughout all of the races, events, strat and glitch hunting and the WR competition. Looking at this it makes me a little nostalgic about the days that the community was truly booming, and while it's insane that the game has gotten so far, the overwhelming presence of Nindiddeh in combination with the relative lack of potential left in any% feels like it kind of put a damper on that. I know that I'm not the only one is no longer close to as motivated to grind the game as much as I used to, and I wish it wasn't so. However having said this, I'm sure that the closing statement on this video will come to pass, and we will see the rise of new runners that can hopefully show all us veterans that the game isn't dead yet. I look forward to the day that mine and others motivation is reignited, and we can make more Sunshine history!

Want what you’ve gotta understand is that most people coming into these videos have absolutely no prior knowledge of this, or any other speed-running community. Myself included. So, seeing this in my feed, and knowing nothing else about the creator, it does look like an attempt to copy of what SummoningSalt has popularized. It’s obviously not once you get more into it, but then that’s the whole point of the comment

I have to say that this is one of the most entertaining documentaries I have ever had the pleasure of watching through. The way you begin with a negative opening statement of the game from the "first" speedrunner and then continue on with that basis and the idea, is Super Mario Sunshine an uninteresting game to speedrun? Then you continue to go through the video as normal because of the fact that simply talking about the history of SMS simply answers the question at the start without ever having to go back to it. That's easily one of the strongest openings you could've opened up with. That's not even talking about the rest of the video which continues to be entertaining and intriguing through out. I must say that I feel you have a talent for this type of structure in a video. I would be very curious to see if that holds water or if this was just a coincidence because of your passion for SMS speed running. In other words I would be very happy to see you make a video similar to this one.

"Ramel Cycle" - I find it amusing how the official title for a useful trick that is used to this day is name after and continues reference a cheater who is otherwise forgotten. No offense to ramel, I just find it a strange fact. Also, I think this is the first time the narrator of a speedrunning history video has shared 1st hand experiences of holding the world record here and there.

Y'know when I was a kid after I beat super mario sunshine I started to look up glitches out of curiosity sake, and wanting to find more ways to have fun on it. I found some wonky, fun ones through videos, and such like clippings, and music distortions alike. Just a whole lotta neat stuff. By chance though I discovered rocket storage on my own. I remember even doing it inside corona mountain for its vertical shaft, and wanting to see if I could shoot all the way to the tip top to my disappointment ofc. Its not a crazy difficult thing to pull off so it would make sense, but when I saw it brought up in the vid I actually felt nostalgic. Thank you super mario sunshine brother
