This convo is relatable to all African/Caribbean kids 🔥 but i think discipline is needed it doesn't mean that you beat your kids when your angry/drunk or anything like that but kids need just a little more than timeout when they do something wrong.

Can relate to so much in this episode - No TV, sneaking out, not allowed to join sports teams, getting beaten. Definitely made our generation mentally strong.

As an aside, I'm learning a lot from Gabriel about conversational skills & how to ask leading questions, so a big thank you for that. Also, I haven't really paid attention to Yusuf on social media, I just thought he was another posing "muscles-pretty-boy" type, but goes to show I was wrong to judge a book by the cover, and still waters run deep! Keep up the great convos Chis! I love that it's guys working out & chatting, so your thoughts are free-flowing, rather than a scripted set-up.

I love the conversation about parents being present yet there not really being a relationship, I’m 21 and reflecting I’ve always had my parents in my household but there was never a real relationship but from the outside in it was a perfect set-up

Really appreciate this convo. And the fact that it's men sharing and chopping it up is brilliant. As an African I understand the all they were saying and the appreciation of the 1st generation is true. They did well in spite of all the circumstances they faced.

It depends on the financial situation of the household - ideally they should be in a position where the mortgage is paid off or nearly paid off by the time kids start working but as an adult asking you for a contribution is nothing wild - if u was living on ur own u would be paying more in bills
@tommysawyer9680
@tommysawyer9680 2 жыл бұрын
@@MobEra89 but I’d be living on my own with my own equity under my own rules. That’s a far better situation. It shouldn’t be a child’s responsibility to pay a parents mortgage. For right or wrong in West Indian and African families the money travels up and backwards instead of downwards. There’s pros and cons to this. We don’t put our elderly in homes we generally look after them and keep them in the house. White people put their elderly in homes and don’t watch them again. However, we send money back that we could instead use to invest or start a business or pay for a training course to get ourselves ahead. In the long wrong as bad as it may sound it’s better for the black community to make the money travel downwards and forwards than upwards and back.
@MobEra89

@@tommysawyer9680 yh i agree - it shouldnt be the child responsibility to pay for a parents mortgage but thats a deeper issue in the black community around generational wealth - there are many reasons around that as not everyone had papers when they arrived so ownership was difficult

@@MobEra89 Good points. I'm referring specifically to our parents generation that were able to get a mortgage though. But yes there are far deeper issues to generational wealth within the black community but i really do feel like our generation can break the chains

@@tommysawyer9680 yh bro ideally you should stay at home and put your money 100% of saving for a deposit so when you leave your leaving for ownership - renting is one of my biggest regrets especially when you dont have to

Beating is a lack of parental self-control 100%. The "I was beaten, with belts, slippers, a fridge, and I'm FINE!" narrative (predominately in the afro-caribbean community), has always irked me.

couldn't agree more. I dont have the time nor the characters to do a full deep dive into it now. But I'm convinced a large reason why our parents, many of which were either born in Africa / Jamaica etc or grew up over there is due to the disconnect they felt with us as children who grew up over here, have the ideals of the UK and generally prescribe (at least when we're young) to many of our British (not necessarily white I'm referring solely to the cultural aspect here) counterparts ideologies. I believe 'beating' is them venting this frustration and an attempt at them bridging the gap between our upbringings. To add I don't necessarily believe they're consciously doing this btw. I hope that made sense.

@@tysonadeyemi3726 We're at a point where we need to start breaking cycles of trauma. Often time we neglect our parents are just grown kids with un-dealt traumas they pass down to their kids. Even though we may have worked out fine, I dont think we hear enough stories of people who went left because of it. We can do better I believe. But I feel you in terms of the beatings straightening you. Sometimes I rather firm a beating than get grounded and have my game console taken away.

We shouldn't forget that parents are humans too lol. They might have all these things they want to do but can't because your living in their house at 28. It can build up to some kind of annoyance. I think it's important for young people who live at home and don't pay bills to have a plan e.g. save up for three years and invest, start a business, pay off student loans etc.
