Elevations above the Mogollon Rim typically receive enough snow to support skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and other snow play opportunities.

However, snow sneakers generally head east outside of Payson up highway 260 to higher elevations in search of spots with snow covered hills. The Horton Creek area past the Horton Creek parking lot but below the Tonto Fish Hatchery is on such spot within a short drive of Payson, AZ.

The most popular cross-country skiing trails near Payson are located on top of the Mogollon Rim. Three of these trails within a short drive of Payson, Arizona are the Woods Canyon Overlook Trail, the General Crook Trail, and the Forest Lake trails.
Snowmobile Trails near Payson, Arizona
Long Draw OHV Route in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and the Black Mesa Ranger District is a popular snowmobile trail. Located on the Mogollon Rim northeast of Payson, Arizona. The route is a 30-mile loop starting at either Long Draw North Trailhead (Chevelon Crossing) or Long Draw South Trailhead (Chevelon Lake). Trailhead includes staging area, toilets and campsite facilities. Area has many shared use routes open for off-highway vehicle use, including snowmobile trails through a ponderosa Pine Forest.

There are two main ski resorts near Payson, Arizona that provide downhill skiing. Both are approximately 2 hours away. The first one is Snowbowl Ski Resort in Flagstaff, Arizona and the other is Sunrise Ski Resort on the Apache Indian Reservation just east of Pinetop, Arizona.

Pine. Arizona sits at around 5500 feet of elevation below the Mogollon Rim also giving it a generally mild climate that is roughly 5 degrees cooler than Payson, AZ. Pine, AZ will also receive occasional winter storms from the Pacific Ocean in the winter months of November through March. The annual snowfall in Pine, Arizona is around 21 inches. In general, snow does not last long as winter temperatures in Pine range from as low as the teens at night to as high as the 60's and 70's during the day.
