Hi Jeremy! I was raised in a very abusive, alcoholic household. If I didn't finish my plate there was big consequences. I still have flash backs. I tried to comply just to avoid the punishments but my mother made some really outrageous things like pickled tongue, stuffed heart etc. We were poor so she did what she could. There was also not much love towards me, for some reason I was the least liked child out of 4. My parents had moved to Canada with my 2 brothers and I was an unexpected/wanted addition at the time. So love came in the form of food. If I was sick, instead of a hug, I got a chocolate bar or other sweet items. To this day at almost 69, if I am down or I need a hug, I feel like I should have that treat. I wasn't over weight my whole life as a matter of fact I was usually under weight but after 2 pregnancies in my late 30s I started to gain and nothing worked. WFPBSOS has helped me lose 45 pounds and bring my A1C down from 11 to 5.8. I am not perfect and still have those moments that I immediately regret but I carry on as tomorrow is a new day. Thank you for sharing your story!

Trauma in childhood is the perfect recipe for disordered eating. Eating for me became self-soothing because it was reliable when growing up in a chaotic and abusive environment. Plus the clean your plate mentality by my parents reinforced ignoring my fullness signals. I have had to relearn how to eat and respect my body. And channels like this are loving and supportive! Thank you Jeremy ❤.

Having been obese since the age of 3 obviously I developed bad food habits, depression etc etc. Back then no one knew anything about nutrition etc so I led a solitary isolated life, being food addicted but constantly searching for an answer. Finally WFPB appeared on my horizon. Lost half my body weight, will always be in recovery but WFPB eating & self education has enabled me to maintain that loss. I now swim, ride horses, walk my dog for miles, love my food & what is most astonishing - actually like myself.

I was born in 97, and we still had that clean plate rule. The issue I had was I was undiagnosed autistic and had issues with the texture of meat and the texture of canned vegetables. Eventually, my mom gave up and resorted to highly processed foods just to get me to eat something. I became overweight pretty quickly as a kid, and I also had the losing too much weight problem as a teen! Looking back on some high school photos, I looked sickly. I've finally come to that happy medium of a healthy weight and healthier relationship with food ❤

I found this very helpful. I never associated the clean plate club with gaining weight. My Dad would tell us that what we didn’t eat for dinner we could eat for breakfast. (Which never happened, not even once.) I’m one of those people who really didn’t think about my weight until recent years. I’d like to lose ten pounds but i’ve discovered that ‘wishing it away’ doesn’t seem to work. I need to do the work and cut out the sweets, as you mentioned. My husband is a chocoholic. I’m buying or cooking chocolate for him every.single.week. He’s not ready to do the work so i need to do it alone. I’ve been vegetarian for over twenty years so that’s easy for me. (He is not.)

You can be a chocolate lover and still get your health/weight in shape - chocolate, in moderation, is totally fine - just change the ingredients around it a bit - have it a little less, etc...

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I was also told to finish my plate as a child because of starving kids in Africa. I also struggled to maintain a healthy weight pretty much my entire life. I'm college, I abused myself with calorie counting and over exercising. It has taken me years to unlearn those abusive behaviors. Over a decade later, I finally eat what I want, exercise because I enjoy it, and easily maintain it with a WFPB diet.

Just found this video- rang so many bells! The starving children in another place, the finish your plate- even if you loathed it. The wierd pride in putting away too much food. Strange reinforcement for self harming behaviors. Later in early adulthood, living abroad I had very little money and learned to live off a Knorr soup mix with rotting veg and milk added every night to the same pot, Back in the States, the amazing amount of choice got me. It took me 2/3 of this life to learn NOT to clean a plate- really hard. But you are right- it’s about how your body actually is not numbers or disciplines that aren’t really sustainable. You know internally when you feel good- and you can walk for free without a gym. I found WFPB about 10 yrs ago taking care of my mother- it’s fun in a way steal and potatoes never was and the blood results can’t be beat. Thank you for the honesty and for recommending those who’d like someone to talk it through with should- no shame in caring for yourself.

I grew up the only child of three, and many cousins, the only one with a weight problem (to my adult self, I don't look overweight in those old photos, just larger than other children and a girl besides). My mother weighed about 110 back then (no father). In HS life got really, really bad and that was when I really started packing on the weight at about 20 lbs a year. We lived in Southern California in a culture that worshipped the beautiful (50s and 60s), so I stood out. I started Weight Watchers when I went away to college in the early 70s. Those early days formed the beginnings of a database in my head that is still there and has been added to and adjust over the decades. Nowadays, I maintain in a spreadsheet. When I was diagnosed with diabetes and sent to workshop classes, that database morphed into the diabetic exchanges which I still follow. I have lost appreciable weight several times, but maintenance w/o vigilance was the challenge. When life got bad again, and I tasted sugar, my brain would break and the weight would gradually come back. My newest challenge was my heart issues. Life was going bad again and something happened that shocked me into regaining control of my life. So here I am, WFPB bolstered with research and maintaining with the help of my spreadsheets. The Esselstyns and Greger form the basis of my style of WFPB and SOS free. I have regained my health, clarity, and vitality. I am facing that maintenance hurdle. In Weight Watchers, it was simply a matter of increasing exchanges until you stabilized (a bit easier said than done) and that is what I am working toward. I seem to be leveling out at about 115 ( I am 5t 4in). But I am afraid of letting go of my vigilance. For one thing, I don't think I can trust my body's hunger signals. My feeling is that so long as I continue to have the energy I have while aerobic and strength training, able to long stride hike, and my appetite remains healthy (I love my cooking), I am doing OK.

Several years ago, I lost about 45 pounds in about 6 months with calorie counting. It became addictive doing that, just like you were talking about. I logged everything I put in my mouth, even if it was a piece of sugar-free gum & weighed out my food. I ate too few calories & excessively exercised. But at work, there were rumors that I must either have cancer, or was on drugs because of how much I lost in a short amount of time, even though I worked very hard to do it. But I really wasn’t eating right, and gained it back when I quit logging & exercising. Now I’m trying again with WFPB.

Love this video. I also grew up in the era of eat all your dinner then you can leave the table. I know this is where my eating disorder started.. Oh boy, I too came from the era of how important it is to clean everything on my plate. I still struggle with that too. But I still struggle with portion sizes, even though it's wfpb. I try, with some success most days, to keep portion sizes of the treats much less than I'd have eaten in the past. Plus, in the past, those treats were loaded with sugar and fat -- not anymore. Great video, by the way.

Hi Jeremy, I appreciate your honest story and I'm another with a lifelong difficult relationship with food. I've been as heavy as just over 300# and have maintained a still obese 200-220 for the last couple of decades through a variety of strategies, mostly not crazy ones. But at 62, I am ready to deal with the fact that even at about 5'8", this is still a lot of extra weight and I'm not doing my aging body any good. So I went to a WFPB diet about 2 months ago (have lost about 12#) via Dr. Greger, Chef AJ, and found you through a video shoutout in a Chef AJ interview this weekend. Now I can't stop watching your great ideas. I am not doing flour and added sweeteners and salt, and I'll make adjustments where needed to your recipes. But what an amazing resource you have provided. Thank you thank you!

As a parent, I can see why our parents forced us to eat. My son will ignore his plate of food, then get super moody when he is beyond hungry. There is a fine line between, this kid needs to eat enough and am I forcing him to eat too much. I grew up in the 80's too, so I was always forced to eat a huge plate of food regardless of how hungry I was.
@pbwithjeremy
@pbwithjeremy 4 ай бұрын
YES - very fine line. Our trick was to always have healthy snacks around and just recognize when the kids were about to get hangry. It takes time to get to know each kid's habits and be diligent with them. They won't let themselves starve :) It's worth it though - our kids don't necessarily eat WFPB like we aim to, but they have a very healthy base that I seem them defaulting to a LOT more than any of their friends.

Hello Jeremy from Cambridge Ont. 🇨🇦! I would love to hear more about the guidelines/rules you have over meal times with your kids now and when they were younger. With inflation creeping higher and with the intense grocery costs we are all seeing, food waste is something we are not fans of. I often serve small portions for our 4 young kids, and just keep getting up multiple times a meal to keep refilling plates if needed, but I do find “you need to sit and finish your meal” comes out from time to time if they want to end dinner early to go play, etc. If they say they are full - that’s obviously ok!, but it’s also easy for them to say that after just eating 1 piece of broccoli lol.. Hubby and I tend to eat more as we will then finish the kids leftovers. (We are all vegan and the kids don’t know life any differently so making sure they eat enough is also on the mind). Thanks!
@pbwithjeremy
@pbwithjeremy 4 ай бұрын
Since the kids were old enough we let them make their own plates for dinner, so they got to decide how much they ate. And they could always go back for more. We never forced them to finish their food, but if they were hungry an hour later, they had to eat the leftovers, and if they didn't want that then they could make a peanut butter sandwich and have some baby carrots, cucumbers, or snap peas. And if they didn't want that then they probably weren't actually hungry :) Now they're old enough and comfortable in the kitchen they can whip up their own things.

I loved this video….. thank you for being transparent about the point in your journey that the weight loss had gone too far. We are so inundated with information that sometimes we lose sight of how simple it can be. Eat good food when hungry. Stop eating good food when full. Be present in your moments. Again, thank you!

YOU ARE FUNNY! Love it! xoxo Great video! IT IS REALLY ABOUT STAYING AWAY FROM ANIMAL PRODUCTS AND ALL FATS!! Most important. Jeremy what we do is follow our whole food plant based diet hard core. Very little animal fat foods as well and little carbs. HOWEVER we ALLOW normal food - full portions - at a restaurant twice per month. These are CHEATS. Full ones with restaurant deserts too and we eat everything. YET we still lose weight the rest of the month and never gain. Gets rid of all cravings left over too!!

Hello from Denmark! Thanks for sharing J - you're not alone. I hear every word that you're saying and it sounded just like my own upbringing in the 80's, or at least I can relate. Who knows if we had been going to school toghether we might have been friends. 9.9 out of 10 of my meals are now plant based, I don't deny myself food but everything is considered and your channel help me confirm, that I've made the right choise about being WFPB. I have a LEGO hat too hehee :)

When I was a kid, the rule was that you had to eat a little bit of everything on the table and everything on your plate. You would have to sit there until you were finished, or u could have it for breakfast To this day, it feels weird if I leave food on my plate. My parents liked liver and onions, so those days were particularly horrible. 🤢

I never forced my children to finish their plates ... BUT ... if they didn't eat it all, I'd save it for their snack or the next meal. We were very poor and could not afford to throw food away or be picky. They are all married and raising their children the same way. 😊

I like you and admire you a lot. I once commented not very kindly on another one of your videos and you were so kind and respectful; it truly impacted me and I subscribed right there and then. I don’t know if sometimes I subconsciously like to test people and do or say things that aren’t really cordial, but it fascinates me to see people’s reactions; it’s almost like a filter that I utilize. But I don’t like it, I want to stop. I want to be awesome and loving like you. Also, I was born and raised in Mexico, so it wasn’t soap what it was put in our mouth but hot peppers 😆. Thank you for your videos and your knowledge; I appreciate you sharing information with us.

Hot Peppers! I'll take the soap! This is such a lovely message to get - thank you. That shows tremendous character in you, so thank you for being vulnerable. I try to assume that if someone is writing something that's, potentially unkind, that it doesn't mean that person isn't kind - they're just not at their best right now. And the internet is an easy place to be shitty because it's hard to see that there's a human on the other side of it. I'm not always at my best either, I'm a work in progress. The fact that you're bringing this up is a HUGE step. Very classy and kudos to you. Happy to have you in our community Rosie! Where do you live now?

Hi neighbour from Dundalk, Ont. You are such an inspiration. Listening to your story about growing up. I to heard about the starving children. I also said mail it to them. Which I got a smack. I like your comment about just be an adult. I am going to use that when my inner voice says go ahead it'll be good. Plus using smaller plates. Thank you for all of your hard work❤❤❤

When I was a kid, struggle with shame by for my own family. They compare me with my older sister and call me names. Looking the photos, I wasn't fat or ugly, just a little chubby, but my parents has horrible childhood, so the mock was normal for them. My dad die on a car crush when I have 16 yrs old, and almost hit 100 kilos with 1.50 meters high.

I was born in 1952 and as I got older I had to clean my plate OR ELSE. It was horrible. I'm not sure if having alcoholic parents had anything to do with that or not. Anyway, the soap in the mouth thing was popular back then too if we talked smart of cussed. Hmmmmm and I wonder where my sister and I learned to cuss at 7 years old or so.
