I think 9800X3D (or 9950X3D if they get that right also) in about a year price performance wise. Am open to they seem to be running Ryzen 9000 better on Linux currently. Likely I'm waiting, 12900KF 4090 48gb DDR5 still kicking but am open to upgrading during AM5 sometime. A lot of people if they have a recent CPU should likely go for a GPU upgrade. We'll have to see how kicking these X3D chips are next month.

My thoughts: Zen 5 added 30% more logic for floating and integer operations however despite of that it's not fulfilling the performance even with PBO, but why? the obvious issue (apart from TDP throttling and admin mode) is slow Memory access this is because AMD used the same 6nm I/O chip as for Zen 4 the I/O chip contains Memory Controller and Infinity Fabric, I'm not sure which of them is badly designed but this I/O chip was even a bottleneck for Zen 4 that's why X3D cache provides huge performance boost. But even the cache itself is slowing down access to RAM AMD needs re-architect the access to memory or even switch to HBM since they do redesign anyway but without any changes I believe X3D has not reached it's bottleneck yet and therefore 9800X3D will be around 20-30% faster than 7800X3D

I agree the 7800X3D is the way to go right now, just recently converted to AMD after my I9-13900K was damaged from the microcode issue (Great for the first year,). Swapped to AMD paired with and X670E and the system runs like a charm with no issues and cooler too (under volted with the PBO2 curve optimizer). Plus you can really good deals on the CPU and Motherboard combos. Got the 7800X3D, MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk, 64GB G.Skill 6000 CL30 Ram kit and a Crucial 1TB Gen 4 M.2 drive for $754 in a combo at Microcenter a few weeks back.

@@2hotscot I already had a 4090 GPU, and 3 Samsung m.2 drives (a 1TB 980Pro and 2 2TB 980Pro), The reason I got the Cruical 1TB was for two reasons. First I wanted a new boot drive so I could start fresh and make sure before reusing my old drive. And 2nd I read the reports on the MSI motherboard that there were issues where the rebooting sometimes would "loose" the drive with certain brands in the gen 5 m.2 slot (Reportedly Samsung and WD drives). The 1TB crucial was on sale for $70. The rest of the existing system was the 4090 GPU, Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer III AIO, Corsair 1200W PSU all in a Fractal Meshify 2 case. I looked at the Team Group drives but at the time I was worried of that reported bug, So i stuck with a brand/model on the QVL list..

I just snatched a 7800x3d on a $50 discount. If the 9800x3d was any good it'd be hyped up way more than it is now. It will probably be like 10-15% more performance for 20% more price and 7800x3d will raise in price because of that

Thing is I wouldn’t wait for the 9000 series savior, the performance gains that we see could simply be that it runs on the same platform than 7000 so there might be physical limitations. Maybe when AM6 comes out there’s gonna be a more significant boost just like between AM2-AM3, AM3-AM4 and so on. But that’s the trade off when they keep a platform for many generations of cpus to keep the upgrade path interesting, you won’t have huge performance boosts but more like improvements, more cores, more like an updated platform instead of a real upgrade.

Part of AMD's strategy is to make their previous gen more attractive. The latest gen is priced high and for early adopters, then will become attractive once their previous gens sell thru enough and it gets price cuts. Zen 4 pricing moved Zen 3, Zen 5 will keep moving Zen 4, RDNA3 moved RDNA2, etc

I kinda saw this coming. Ryzen 9000 improved only in IPC (tbf, by a lot in some workloads) and memory controller. Everything else is copy+paste from Zen4. What does that mean? It means performance improvement is essentially 100% application dependent. If your game or app likes the changes AMD made, you will see a big uplift. If it doesn't, you might not see any difference. And reviews reflected this, some (Level1Techs, LTT) were positive, others (HWUB, GN) were not. And what do you know, all of them had hugely different benchmark suites. Personally there were some big gains in code compilation that are very exciting to me. I will upgrade to 9950X3D or it's Intel equivalent once those CPUs hit store shelves

Great videos! I have a 9700X and I like it, but it's definitely not a big improvement. For sure these Zen 5's need a real price reduction for what we're getting. Having said that, there is more headroom with these chips and their clock speeds. For 9800X3D I think it's possible that they figure it out like with the 7800X3D and it doesn't need all the power to do well. It could run closer to 6GHz. I expect it to be expensive, maybe $499. Thumbs up!

Jason, recently I saw SkatterBencher undervolt and overclock the 9700X to 5.8Ghz, which seemed to provide quite the uplift in all tasks. In his video, the undervolting seemed to be where the biggest increase in performance was found. It was interesting to see a few mouse clicks brought the cpu to life. That said, the wattage went to 170W+, so I guess it comes down to how you wanna run the cpu. Hopefully AMD can get things tuned for better performance going forward.

Yeah, I'm torn between waiting for X870/X870E/B850/B850E, and the 9800X3D? Or just go for what is best bang for buck AM5 mobo and a 7800X3D? I'll be undervolting as stable as I can go...Kinda leaning towards what is out now. Even if I just buy the CPU, but wait on the 800 series MOBO's. If the 9800X3d is actually good, I could always get it or a higher variant 9000X3D series later? For a little more future proofing is it worth waiting? Not sure if there is some tuning of features, that will allow more refinement for performance, that will benefit these 9000 series on the 800 series boards in time, that will make waiting worth while? I don't have to upgrade, It's more of a want. I'm on a B550 Aorus Pro V2 mobo with 32GB 3200 CL14 RAM and 4070Ti Super, so it's a cracking mid tier rig, for gaming (currently). Maybe I make do with what I've got for a few more years to come. What is making me want to change is the extra CPU performance and the amazing efficiency of the 7800X3D blowing the already efficient 5800X3D, out of the water. Is it a waste of time? I've had this platform since the 5000 series were announced with a 5600x/3070 initially and it's still running AOK.

I wish AMD would have come out and said what 9000 series really was: 7000 series performance while saving energy draw. Only problem being 9000 series is almost overly optimized to the point that when you start overclocking it, it used More energy than 7000 series watt per performance equivalent. For home users looking for raw performance, this wasn't the big release it was made out to be. For server-light or multi-CPU use however (like rendering farms not already using server-level hardware), this would be an ideal upgrade on perf for energy used.

100% guaranteed that BIOS updates and bug fixes will improve Ryzen 9000 performance in relation to Ryzen 7000. Several bugs are already confirmed, as you noted: There were issues with reviewer RAM compatibility, discrepancies in performance between one tester to the next using the same test and the same CPU, along with many more discovered anomalies and issues. So with all of that said, the 9800X-3D should have a bigger increase in performance in comparison to the 7800X-3D, because at least a few bugs will be found and fixed, and its a low-power chip so power limits wont be an issue and its a single CCD so no core parking issues either.
