Hello Friends,
I’ve been receiving questions on parenting. Frequently asked questions like how to grow a good child, a strong or a confident child. I wanted to share my views on the same.
Let me share my life experience, about how my parents allowed me to grow as a confident individual.
Children have to be allowed to speak freely about their thoughts. In my early childhood, whenever I did anything wrong, my parents taught me the right by in a commanding but not a forcible way. I always had a cushion with my parents having the belief that I can freely express anything I want with them. Even If I have done a wrong thing, I had no fear of expressing it with them. There was space for me correct my wrong doings.
Secondly, Responsibility. If you are giving a task to a kid, allow him to complete the task from start to finish. Kids generally might not show interest in every task and may whine and show signs of objecting. It may be the child’s area of interest or not, practice your kids to complete the task from start to finish, irrespective of their interest. Once they complete the task, analyze and let them continue if they are interested in it. Deciding it is not their area of interest should be done only after completion of the task.
Interrupting and stopping a child before even they complete the task creates a habit of fatigue, lack of focus and loosing concentration.
Thirdly, show unconditional love to your kids. Even if the kids do not do what you like, show them all the love you can. Conditioned love towards kids will lead children to do secretive things behind your back. So please stop that habit and start showing unconditioned love. Tell them the good and bad. Even we adults do not know what is wrong and wright many times. Give them the choice to choose the right and the bad. Give them the responsibility and accountability starting at an early age. Atleast to start from 10 years.
The fourth one is, do not fight back or argue at your kids. Don’t boss them over saying you are superior. Children might know things that we do not know. Analyze why the kids are arguing. Before you react, analyze and convey the message in a form that the child can understand. Most of the time, there will be a reason for the child speaking back at you. If we find the root cause of the issue and solve, 90% of the kids will slowly suppress anger.
Finally, it is we the parents who have brought this child to this world. But that does not mean the child should eat, sleep and act like the way we want. If you enforce such things, probably the child will lose interest in life and may suppress their true talents. Every child has an inborn intelligence and we need to understand that first. Adapt and adjust to the child way of life.
These are the life lessons which I liked to share. Even I was not an easy child. I was a naughty, mischievous kid. But even after all the wrong doings, my parents provided me the support system which has brought me here this day. Even today, I am able to talk freely to my parents about anything I do. I was able to take bold steps clearly only because of the confined freedom I was given at an early stage.
I request all parents to follow these steps and only then, you can groom a confident, strong children in the society.
