The Peacock Gudgeon (Tataurndina ocellicauda) is a great little fish from Papua New Guinea. It stays small and makes a wonderful addition to almost any non-aggressive tropical fish community aquarium.

Hey Jason great video! I recently purchased 10 of these guys and they are currently in my quarantine tank. My question is everyone says they are peaceful fish however I've recently noticed that three have died unexpectedly and 3 of the ones that are still alive have ripped fins one with it's back tail almost completely gone. One larger male has perfect finnage and seems to be very territorial. Is this normal or should I remove the male that seems to be chasing? I would hate to get rid of him he looks great but I don't want him to murder the rest of the group one at a time. Thank you for any feedback.

Hi Jason, great educational video as always. I am wanting to add these guys to my community tank (53gallon) which currently has a male plakat betta, honey gourami, harlequin rasbora, cardinal tetra, hillstream loaches, cory cats and some otos. Would these peacock gudgeons wreck havoc in the tank or would they be a good fish to add. I'd like something that stands out at the bottom of the tank as I currently have the corys which hang out at the back and hardly venture to the front of the tank. Parameters at soft water, heavily planted, pH 7, temp 78F. Any other suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you

Question: Can Peacock Gudgeons tolerate aquarium salt? I have a sad molly in my 10g (other roommates are a platy and a nerite snail) and looking to treat him with some salt to start. But I've seen some hesitant comments about salt and gudgeons. May just move the molly over to small quarantine tank I have. I definitely love my gudgeon, I got things going back in June and my LFS suggested him. I hadn't heard of them before, but he's great and doing well. Looking to upgrade soon to a 20 Long and of course get some new friends. Thank you for all your videos and help with things as I've been going along. Cheers.

Hey, I've actually never seen them lay eggs in real time. I just see the eggs afterwards. The best thing to do is find the male and see if he is guarding eggs (usually in a cave or under rock work). If he is, and you want to keep the eggs, you'll want to either remove the eggs (and tumble them), or remove the other fish in the tank and make sure there is good water flow where ever they laid the eggs to prevent fungus. Good luck!

Are they a lot happier in a tank with both males and females? I love everything I've learned about these fish but haven't found if a male would be able to live alone without a female and stay peaceful with tetras, which would be his tank mates. I know from keeping guppies they're generally more happy in a tank with both males and females but my tank got crowded very quickly, so until I have a more established space dedicated to my tanks, I've been avoiding fish that kind of have to reproduce to be happy, like the guppies. So I would likely get one peacock gudgeon to avoid fry, only as long as the fish would be happy.

prime time aquatics , hi jason ive just watched the video you did in 2017 on the pea cock gudgeon you say the males are known for eating the eggs unless they are removed and put into a tumbler , does this behaviour mean the peacock gudgeon is very rare to find in the wild ? Paul

@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 ай бұрын
Actually it’s not the eggs they eat but the fry. In a true the fry leave the area as soon as they hatch and there tends to be lots of cover and small foods for them to eat in that cover. In a tank it’s harder to get away and usually not as much cover.

im surprised they love them but if you have alot of natural food options in your tank it can change that, i had a tank i cycled for a few months and let the blader snails go nuts for my buddy with pea puffers and then i had over 100 clutchs in there so i put 3 in and they picked em clean in a few days, still have a small female in with them 2 month old fry shes very peaceful and controls the two snail population

Please help me mate I have a batch about to hatch. Are you able to feed them Baby brines right after hatching? I heard they are too big for these fry first couple days. I bought hikari first bites in hopes they'll eat it. Otherwise I have some brine eggs in the mail but they don't arrive probably until too late. None of my LFS have life food/cultures

I always fed live baby brine from the start and had really good survival rates. I've breed over 1,000 of them without any issues.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics how long does it take for them to go from the wriggler stage to free swimming? Some of my eggs have the tails starting to pop out, just want to try and see if I can somehow get BBS eggs in time somewhere. Also what temp do you keep your eggs /fry?

daniel gally their yoke sacs are usually used up within a couple days - that’s when they start eating. Very exciting!

Prime Time Aquatics appreciate your input. So far I have a free swimmer and a couple wrigglers. The rest are still developing eggs . I never heard of such a gap in development. Have you ever seen that? Hoping for the best, but even if I get only a few fish out of this on my first try I’ll try to be happy with that

@@PrimeTimeAquatics well they're hatched I've been giving them hikari and BBS, but I'm not sure if they're eating. They seem interested in the BBS but it might be too big. Are you sure yours really ate that? At that size they can eat microorganisms. Have you ever considered they were just surviving on infusoria and micro wormy stuff in the tank ? especially if it's well planted there might be more than enough for them

Will two male peacock gudgeons fight
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 6 жыл бұрын
I've had 25 Peacock gudgeons in a 20L without any issues for over a year. However, with only two males I would give them both their own caves at opposite ends of the aquarium. I would probably have plants and wood to break up line of sight as well. The short answer is they may quarrel, but those things can hopefully limit it in the right size tank (probably at least a 30" tank).

Hi. I know Peacock gudgeons are bottom dwellers. In a 62 gallon, 48 inch long could you have four peacock gobies, 5 corydoras, 2 Bolivian rams and a rubber lip pleco. Does this sound like too many bottom dwellers to you? I suppose I could cut the PG group down to 3, but I know they are better in bigger groups.
